1. Popped into The Pearl this morning to catch a session with Tim Pausinger before he left for the Xmas holidays. He basically finished my chest piece. In January we'll link the shoulders and arms to it. He is also going to do some spider webbing between the tattoo and the bottom of my pecs.

Bonji isn't a 'tag' Bonji is derived from sanskrit and is used solely for religious words.

A tattoo name or senjafuda is made with Hiragana and Kanji.

Many people have made up their own 'tattoo name'

Many western tattooers have signed their work too. From Ron Ackers, Ed Hardy, Jack Rudy, Thom DeVita.... etc.

    Thanks for the clarification Stewart!

Although I am no authority on the subject, I would say that If you want a Bonji tag, then ask for it. Your tattooer seems knowledgable enough to be able to advise you whether that is appropriate or not. If you really want to know, check out some of the books about Horiyoshi 3. I remember seing a section on Bonji tags and other signature marks on tattoos in one of the books I have. I am not at home now, so I couldnt tell you which.

  4. i'm starting a tomomori sleeve in febuary next year and just wanted to ask if my tattooer signs the tattoo will it still be respectfull to japanese tattoo? as i really want him to sign it but at the same time i don't want it to be disrespectful to the cultur., as i read that only people with a hori title can sign it, but then again i've seen others do it too who don't have hori titles so wanted to here from you guys? my first post here so sorry if it was posted in the wrong thread, cheers!

May I inquire who the tattooer is?

  5. I'm going to elaborate on this from the report @Lance gave of Shige's seminar from this year's SFO convention:

So based on that I'm going to say that doing straight copies of Shige's tattoos is garbage and that even if the copy is technically well done it's soulless and completely misses the essence of the tattoo.

At the risk of giving this thread more attention, I wanted to pop in and say that you post is 100% correct.

  6. I have a former neighbour who seems to be doing pretty well for himself--if you count gallery showings, publications, etc., as an indicator of "doing pretty well"--doing exactly that and calling it art. Doesn't mean that it isn't complete and utter flash-in-the-pan garbage though.

It is art. Art as in what follows the F in fart. In all seriousness, it is art, just complete drivel, horseshit.

  7. I think an important point here is thus: Can you ever really trust the authenticity of a design when you find flash you like online? When you see a sheet in a shop, you can look at the marking/stamps/etc. to determine it is the real deal. You know that sheet is designed as intended by the artist. The same can hardly be said for the internet. I could take every Sailor Jerry sheet, throw it in photoshop and then upload it online and no one would ever know it was slightly different. Unless, of course, you have access to the real, physical thing.
