my horror story is that i never apprenticed or tattooed out of my house. i lied about having years of experience and got hired at a shop and started tattooing the general public for money in a shop my very first day. it was awful, i couldn't ask for help because i didnt want to give away that i didnt know what to do. i didnt use rubber bands for my first couple of tattoos and even when i started using them i didnt know why i just saw that everyone else was using them. my first tattoo was "ranch industry" written in 1 inch old english and it took me almost 5 hours. every tattoo i did was lined with a 3 but looked like it had been tripled lined with a 14 round because i kept going over the lines thickining them in an attempt to "clean" them up. when asked why i was doing the outlines so thick i claimed that i was also a graff artist and that that was the style.

I got this Baphomet head from Tim Lehi last month. Why? Easily my favorite tattooist, and I think he understands what I am going for. He has tattooed me a few times and always gives me suitable tattoos for me, like he knows me, ha.

And as a client I like to think that my tattooer is so committed to my project that they carry it around in a special brief case hand cuffed to their wrist till my tattoo appt------ but as a tattooer I find it interesting that clients assume that as soon as they make their appointment- i'll be working on their tattoo non stop - till they're in my chair-

FUCK THAT. that being said, i do think people should be presentable, clean and wearing clean clothes, decent shoes, etc. i heard a saying from rollo..."if you're gonna ask somebody for $100, you better look like $100". but as for official uniforms, FUCK THAT.

i have a uniform for work. it's whatever is clean in my house haha! i'm a slouchy person so most of my clothes are slouchy, i wish i could care more about the way i dress but i can't seem to. being comfortable is important to me, physically and psychologically, i simply feel like a dork if i try to match an outfit together. i live in jeans and plain tshirts.
on the shop uniform thing though, i couldnt imagine working in such an environment. to me it speaks of the shop's ethos.
at frith street the emphasis is on the tattoos that come out of our shop, not the way we appear to the client. we dont turn up smelling of booze or wear offensive slogans/tshirts, we're a tidy bunch, but we try to let our work speak for itself instead.

I'm bummed it's the same ol same ol. Lemme guess, youre getting tattooed cuz somebody died? oh what's the story behind your tattoo? Who cares?!!!!! Getting tattooed and tattooers and people in general are interesting enough. No need to fish for a story. I still think it needs to be done taxi cab confessions style.
That counter lady is crazy. She mentioned she comes from the corporate world and wanted something a little less formal. The first thing she does is start micro managing and acts like a secretary in an office to people coming into the shop. Lame. The woman tattooer looks like she does good work. The whole not getting respect thing is probably bullshit. Look at women like dawn Cooke, Katie sellergren, and our very own Deb Yarian. If she feels she's not getting respect, I don't think it's because of her work must be something else.
All this crap being said, I love tattooing. The good and even some of the bad. My DVR is set. Hopefully we'll get to see some real good tattoos on this show. A little less chattin and a little more tattin.

i keep getting requests for this rib rose and swirls thing that women print off the internet. i redraw it everytime of course. i think ive done it at least 6 times.

im a huge rose fan, they are so full, so versatile and can change the mood of a piece by changing a few things while still looking like a rose. they also fit great in odd spaces and help solve so many cover up dilemmas. i never get sick of tattooing them.
i love peonies and chrysanthemums also but never do many of them at all. i do prefer tattoos that have more traditional flowers in them.

oh, and if you're stupid enough to get a glow in the dark tattoo and you get sick, good.

I really don't ever want to see another show. I try to be open about the added business, but even my walk in's lately think that shit is passe and gay. It's encouraging people who don;t even want tattoos to get tattooed and they end up being the kind of people that take three hours of hand holding just for a 60 dollar name. I'd rather bang out fast names on gangsters all day before having to take three hours to talk someone through a fifteen minute tattoo. Not to mention the freaking amount of people walking in trying to be tattooers.

I like the Van Halen/Smiths combo there.
We listen to 80's stuff (Smiths, Talking Heads, Cure), Reggae, Punk (Off With Their Heads, Face to Face, Alkaline Trio), and some more rock and roll type stuff. I save the hardcore for the day I have there by myself.
