"I quit!" how to stay friends when you leave a shop...
Lizzie posted a topic in Crazy Tattoo Stories
I haven't met many people who have success stories leaving their shops for others or to open up. Even when things are done in the shop owners benefit, and with the utmost respect it goes pear shaped too often. Any tips on how people here did it? I'd love for anyone to not go through the ex communication I have in the past. And why do we think this happens? Are we really that scared that we're going to lose our clientele to the new guy? Or is this just part and parcel of a linear career where one shop trumps the next until you're happy and settled? I would ask that any responses here obviously don't make any negative mention of former employers. This isn't what this post is about: moreso to help people "quit better" and more respectfully...- 19 replies

( anyones name mentioned here..i do not want my work to reflect on them so know if it is fucked up..it is because i did so of my own free will...with that noted... Ok i thought i should post a tattoo or two since i been running my keyboard(mouth) on yer forum.....Anyway old friend of mine sang in Punk rock band from SF verbal abuse for a number of years..snotty Scotty...well we were kids together in early LA punk rock...Starwood etc.. Scott.he used to call hisself loner..so we have been slowly filling up his arm( for over 25 years mind you)....I did a bob shaw cobra girl and some of bob Roberts daggar snake thang etc.....well anyway he wanted a lone wolf...after i showed him a few and thought if anyone should have one he should now I have never been as good at drawing originals as robbing people for theirs...so i looked at Rollos and loikas, one of Aaron colemans too and Mike wilson recently texted me a beautiful one he had done.... Scott wants a derby...so the first one i drew i sent to Mike and he told me to do the hair thinner so it does not look like a dragon...like the one above....and to correct this and that...and also isn't it all about "why grandma what big ears(teeth, nose etc...) you have ...when one does a wolf one should keep that in mind..no???so note the different ear sizes from first drawing to next one.... anyway i redrew it to look like this as scott did not want the chicks leg(Mike wilson suggested that the leg was too small anyway and looked like an afterthought)I know scott likes girls as much as the next fella...(he is married to kelly Doyle who ran that cosmetic tattooing thing with patty in OC many moons ago....and is own of my wifes best friends....we have all known each other since early 80s...)goddamn i talk alot ANYWAY HE DID NOT WANT TO CONVEY PUSSY ON THE BRAIN SO WE THREW THE LEG OUT... again I really like not having to draw...stencil jockeying it....anyway so Scott comes up I show him mine(i have a brokedown one scott sterling did i me that rollo painted and we settled on kinda one inbetween...I tried to put a leather jacket collar on him(with LA germs capri blue edge but a Verbal abuse button)...this is a pic of it not healed and bloody.... You can click on the pics to see bigger..i posted them bigger but they were so big that there is no way i am gonna put them online that big..not my tattoos anyway PS I did not know if this is where it belonged(tattoo designs) i just wanted to show a small evolution and my ass to other tattooers....(which i guess could be a small evolution in itself..depending....

So I was thinking maybe it would be cool if there was a place for tattooers to post their work or paintings or even rough sketches for upcoming tattoos in a forum thread and get friendly criticism/help/ideas... would others be into this?

I know my tattoo friends like to eat so why don't we set em up with some places they may like to meet for eats... I always appreciate a good meal recommended by a local whe I'm on the road... I mist recommend pulcinella's in little Italy. Their food blew my mind. And they seemed under-frequented. Some group of hungry bearded tattoo dudes need to go rack up a bill there and fill their tummies with the best pizza outside of Naples... Anyway, wish I was there to meet up with all you guys for great after work eats!

Hello, my name is Bryan Burk. I'm a tattooer from Los Angeles, where I work at my own shop, which is called Dark Horse Tattoo, with another artist, Adam Warmerdam. I previously worked at and helped operate a shop here in town called Spotlight Tattoo for about 11 years. I've also worked as a guest at the Family Business in London, Blackheart in San Francisco, and a few other shops over the years. I know a few of the people I've seen posting here (I think I met Mario at my opening party, hello to Dari, Shane, Chad and others!) I have a son named Jacob who is almost 5 and is the light of my life Scott asked if he could interview me for this site, which we did on Tuesday, right after he finished my back/ass/thigh piece (I know you're gonna miss my tumbleweeds, Scott); so I thought I'd make a profile nice to see everyone and I'll have more info & photos of our shop & work up soon thanks! Bryan

I've been tattooing for almost 4 years, born and raised in Phoenix. I am profoundly deaf. But refuse to let my handicap limit me in anything. I'm always open to learn new and old things alike to enrich my profession, the history, and lifestyle of tattooing. I'm constantly painting and making sure the next tattoo/painting I do whether its little stars or a nice piece be better than the last. I found this page through a post from Mario Desa on Facebook. I Read a few interesting posts that contained history, humor, and inspiration, Saw a few established tattooers that frequent here, not wanting to be left out of the fun, I decided to join.

I started doing Iyengar yoga a few months ago, I have scoliosis and I'm a tattooer so my back is fucking SHOT. After a few weeks, I felt like a new man. Pretty remarkable how much better I felt almost immediately. I've ben going a few times a week pretty consistently now, I find that not only am I physically feeling better but I'm also a lot more mentally focused. I highly recommend it. The real shit though, like Mysore or Iyengar style, not that jazzercize bullshit they do some places. Any of you other dudes into it?

Hello all. Im a tattooer in Chicago, have been since 04. Found the site via Nick C and Mario over at CTC's facebooks.. Site looks great. I hope to network with some new people and reconnect with some old... I am a partner at The Code of Conduct here in Chicago. We are off 11th and State Street not too far from where it all began in this City. Our shop is a combo tattoo shop and boutique, which has been looked down at by some more seasoned artist. But fuck it its one of the only way I could get the permits and the down town proper. Plus we are in the heart of 4 colleges so we are giving the kids what they want. And its not a shitty sctratcher shop like alot of the others in this City. All our artist know what they are doing... check out the site. www.thecodeofconduct.com also looking to check out machine builders.. I seem to only stick to the few I know. Time to branch out a bit. -jason hoodrich

Hello LST! I own a shop in Toronto that has hosted a bevy of amazing international artists in our first 18 months of operation and hope to host more. We have in-shop accommodations as half of our shop Is an old converted apartment. Speakeasy's approach to the guest spot is to offer our shop as an artists' sabbatical wherein you can paint and tattoo any hours you please, if our noon-7 doesn't fit your preferred schedule. Our manager, Hayden, is a force of nature booking people in and no one has left disappointed or under-paid for lack of jobs. We also host what will become an annual heavily advertised summer tour where www have 5 artists back to back who work for a small daily rent and can pocket as much cash as they can make, or as little if they just want to come up and be laid back! Last years roster was nikki balls, Josh Egnew, cla Dankmeyer, Adam sage, and Jason lambert, and we can't wait to see who will be part of this amazing project in 2011. All of our advertising for these projects are grassroots and safe for your travels: by postering and handing out handbills, you can be sure that a border guard cannot search your name and deny you entry upon Viewing easily googlable posts about your work trip. We can't wait to host all kind of new friends and share tips tricks and jokes. Lizzie

I think it's time that we start addressing a very important subject- beards. Do you have one? Do you love a man or woman with a beard? If you're not sure where to start on this very important topic, you could always repurpose some of our tattoo questions and make them beard appropriate: When did you grow your first beard? Whose beards have you been influenced by? Experiences while traveling with beards? Funniest beard you've seen? Worst beard you've witnessed? Beard removal or coverup? Favorite celebrity beards? And is it okay for Brad Pitt to braid his beard because he's Brad Pitt? Appropriating ideas from other beards? Best beard care? These questions are just for a jumping off point, please don't feel limited by them. And most importantly, we want pictures!
