  1. Having my full name is kind of weird, I agree. It kind of makes you go high profile automatically and in my opinino makes me look like I am trying to be a big deal.Would prefer to have a username but now that I am signed up and settled I am indifferent about it.
  2. Yeah I wouldn't do half price tattoos, that is just lumping yourself in with them. There is no real solution, but I know everytime someone comes in and wants to cover up some tattoo they got for twenty dollars I make sure they understand that the price they are paying is more than what they would have paid and now a $20 tattoo ends up costing them $270-$320 to make it look decent. When they could have just spent $180-200 and had a good tattoo in the first place.
  3. Most of the time the yahoos running these kinds of shops either still live at home or rent a cheap apartment with like three other people. They have no concept of making enough money to support a family or any kind of grown up lifestyle so they are just looking to make rent, beer and pot money. You would hope that this shop folds up soon and when the next shop like this opens up it's far away from you.
  4. I don't usually drink beer when I get tattooed, but when I do it's not Dos Equis! I always thought it was funny when tattooers told people they couldn't tattoo you if you were drunk, because when your drunk reasonable explanations don't seem to apply.
  5. I really like this method because not only does it make stuff heal better but you go to bed clean and like Stewart said don't leave ink mark on the sheets. I don't usually tell customers this healing method till they have had a few tattoos because first timers can't seem to leave their tattoo alone and I figure the easy the instructions the less they can mess it up.
  6. I usually eat fresh fruit and a granola bar before the tattoo and then have like 4 Imperial IPA's and some over the top food afterward using involving meats piled upon meats. This ensures that I pass out on my couch for the night and when I wake up it's time to remove bandage and shower.
  7. I was harassed by a cop here in Portland with sleeves was trying to catch people riding the train with no fare on 4th of July. I bought an all day ticket at 9pm to go downtown and came back at 1am train stops running at 230 hence end of day. He threatened to write me a ticket because it was after midnight and I was drunk enough to tell him he was just upset that he was stuck on bus duty and he was fucking wrong. Still not sure how I didn't go to jail that night or even got a ticket.
  8. I watched Ross Ferrie put this tattoo on in 1hr 35 min so the lady would be on time to get her kid from school. Nick Colella tattooed me so fast my wife was down the street at Pick me UP cafe and hadn't even gotten her food yet when I walked in all done and bandaged up. Mike Volakakis is another dude that doesn't mess around, big tattoo on the back on my calf just over an hour.
  9. Then there are guys like the late Pinky Yun, who will tattoo a full sleeve dragon no stencil, just start outlining on bare skin.
  10. Is that the one with the ghost chili. I like food way too much for something like that. I admire you for trying it though.
  11. Also any serious collector has a go to guy that can make a tattoo happen on short notice because sometimes you just need to get tattooed.
  12. Anytime is a good time to get tattooed. I prefer fall/winter but at the same time it is a little harder to heal in colder months for me. As far as being busy I think that just really fluctuates. This July crazy busy, last July pretty manageable. Last Feb was crazy busy this year it didn't really get busy till April/May. I think October ended up being the busiest month for our shop last year even with one tattooer on vacation for a week. But Usually Dec/Jan is a pretty good time to catch people with availability.
  13. If Dan Higgs was tattooing I would totally get a Taz from him.
  14. Ultimately you should get what you want. If you want all these styles get them, have quality artists do them and you will be covered which most people never accomplish at all. When I see a picture of someone with a japanese body suit done well it is awesome and I do mean that. So powerful bold, colorful and just looks like the person is wearing a suit of armor. But knowing what it would entail to get a look like this, I don't think even if I had it to do over I would go this route. I like big tattoos, but really there is something very satisfying about walking into a tattoo shop and walking out with a finished product. Three of four sessions into a tattoo for me, it becomes more like a chore to get it done. Now don't get me wrong the end product is always well worth it, but I just think mixing it up between big pieces and single session stuff makes it more fun and allows you to get tattooed by more people.
  15. I think your tattooer makes a good point. The only problem is the more you get tattooed the more you realize there are tons of people you want to get tattooed by, so not only do you have to worry about different tattoo styles, but having different tattooers stuff blend together. I abandoned the idea a long time ago and just get what I want and eventually it will all be filled in. But I would say if you are really looking for a full body suit look listen to your tattooer, oh and don't get biomech.
  16. It seems like it kind of just depends on the tattooer and the design. I have had people draw stuff on me a couple of times but most of the time stencils were applied. There are a lot of guys out there that do amazing work and they choose to draw the design on in certain cases. However the term "free hand ", has become kind of a buzz word among some customers and a gimmick by people who need one in my opinion.
  17. Okay since Shark week is over here is the last pic. Shark head on the back of my leg that I got last year during shark week.
  18. Getting tattooed should be a fun and spontaneous thing at least some of the time. Other wise I might as well be making a dentist appointment.
  19. I have always tried to strike a balance. I reserve the tattoo projects for people in town that I can go back and discuss stuff with and am not in a hurry to get. If I am traveling and trying to get a piece done, I usually tell people that I will pick from what they have their or pick something I know that they are good at and let them draw what they feel like. I feel like if I am traveling to get something from someone it should be a reflection of them, I wouldn't want it to get lost with me trying to dictate every detail.
  20. Stepping Stone Cafe. You eat here because we let you. Menus - Portland, OR - Salvador Molly's Restaurant These are the two places he visited in his trip to Portland. Stepping Stone has really good normal size breakfast, although he visited because of the oversize omelet and 13 inch pancakes. Salvador Molly's is hit and miss IMO, The challenge was Great Balls of Fire, which I kind of relate to the chicken wing challenge story above, just too much spice. Alright for a beer and a appetizer though.
  21. I might check out that Myke Chambers guy, looks like he is doing a convention in Oct in Portland. Not very many out of town people booked for it yet.
  22. Two guys near me that I really like are Mike Volakakis from Mr Tattoo in Portland Oregon and Matt Diehl From Sacred Art in Corvallis, OR. Solid traditional tattooing, not reinventing the wheel just making it look really bold and colorful. Mike doesn't have a blog or website but here is Matt's Matt Valentine Tattoos
