  1. I've noticed there's a surprising lack of mention of the knee in this thread - it's not an area i've had tattooed so i can't comment but i'd have thought it would be up there as one of the worst whether it's the kneecap itself or the knee ditch.

I can only attest to the back of the knee and yes, it gets quite painful there. I'm considering a traditional Hanya on the front of the knee after the lower leg is complete.

  2. My mom still gives me a stink face when she sees a new one, so I don't tell her about them. I don't hide them, but I don't constantly update her. When she found out I went to Austin (I'm in NYC) for the sole purpose of getting tattooed, she was pretty pissed, though, and served me her A+ guilt-trip game.

Her and her siblings (my uncle and aunt) all seriously dislike tattoos. Yet all their kids have them. It's a bit of sore point for them, but what are you gonna do.

    :D

Who did you see in Austin? There are several great artists there.

  3. Clever bird name! :D

A year ago, I was out in the back yard with the dogs when I see a green parakeet land on the porch. The seed feeder was empty and he was looking for food. I managed to keep the dogs back when the chihuahua walks right up to it and the bird didn't fly off. I do the same and reach down. It hops on my hand! Obviously a hand fed pet that was released or escaped and will die outside, being so tame.

I think the word has gotten out among animals that our house is a sanctuary (we have 5 adopted dogs and 3 cats). We bought him a female to keep him from getting lonely. He moved in on her right away, preening her face and playing Barry White records. Sadly, he no longer jumps on our hands and instead protects his woman.

  4. My recent tattoo and my previous tattoo were done 17 years apart. That's a pretty long time for us.

During that time a divorce (and child support) and then another marriage have kept my money away from most luxuries. Plenty of great times happened in between tattoos with my priorities and responsibilities being all over the place. The whole time I kept putting my next tattoo off, but it was still nagging me in the back of my mind... I finally gave in and am extremely happy with the new addition to my skin. I feel more alive. More confident. I want to keep "expressing myself" for lack of a better term.

    Here's something to think about:

How many objects do you own that are relatively old, as in stuff you've had most of your life?

I'm 52 and only a very few objects I've had more than 30 years. I've seen so many things I once thought were important become distant memories. Cars, bikes, guitars, clothes, and even some art are all gone.

So, I love the longevity of tattoos, even my 25 year old tribal bear paw print on the shoulder. The commitment runs deep when it becomes a part of you.

  5. Don't think I've seen this one mentioned: support_good_tattooing is wasting huge amounts of my time the past few days.

Thanks for the support_good_tattooing suggestion. cool.gif

I suggest this one as well, thebesttattooartists.

  6. A guilty pleasure indeed! Even see some of the tattoo artists I know follow inkmaster's Instagram feed even though they say they never watch the show. ;)

Like everyone else, I don't enjoy the contrived drama, but that's Spike and "reality" TV for ya'. I don't mind watching the egotistical a-holes go down in flames, even though some are quite talented in their area.

  7. Thanks for the feedback guys.

The Tig, you mention "images each with a unique style" that would be interesting too. But the plan is that they will all be from the same artists and will be in the same style as the tricycle.

The only part that I am thinking over is the color schemes at this point. The current plan is that the bikes will always be blue but have different accent colors (Green, Purple, Red, Yellow), but I did have the thought to make both the bikes and accent colors change, I just thought that seemed too busy for me.

Hey, I like that even better. Your artist's style is enjoyable to see more of. From the paper images, I thought you were going with basic silhouettes. I think you are on the right track here (not that what I think really counts). If you do one at a time, the next color scheme will just kinda' happen.

  8. I like having a choice on what shows and when. 7 or 8 months out of the year are shorts weather days here, so my legs are usually bare and that's where most of my tattoos are and will be in the future. I do a lot of bike riding so anything on a thigh would be invisible and subject to road rash.

My future pair of arm half sleeves go to the elbow and will likely be exposed at work, but fuck them if they don't like it. wink.gif

  9. Tomorrow I get my first tattoo at Saved in NYC with John Sultana. I'm nervous and excited! ... eeep! (I feel like I'm bragging, saying from where/whom I'm getting my tattoo, but I'm supposed to share that info, right?)

I (like most everyone here) am looking forward to seeing what John creates for you. He is an exceptional artist!

  10. I forgot to mention, in addition to the ease of healing, another reason I was looking into it, is because I'm an EMT, and was wondering what to do about wrapping it and such for work... You know, because having a big open wound exposed to the unknown can be kind of a scary thought!

As a retired paramedic, I get your concern. I'd feel confident using a Saniderm type product while working EMS as it is a great protective barrier against exterior infection sources and pathogens. Just be sure to allow at least half an inch border around the tattooed area since that is where the adhesive actually sticks, on the surrounding un-inked skin. Also, as sighthound said, it takes the hassle out of worrying about cleaning/protection.

  11. So I'm to believe that I'm the first one to walk into this place and ask what the fuck is going on?

As for the forum rules, I don't question it. I don't really need to know all the details of the profession. Tattoos are expensive, hurt, and require a lot of time and skill. That's all I need to know as a customer. If you're going to not get tattooed just because a forum won't tell you how much so-and-so charges per hour or how much their backpiece cost, that's just pretty sad. I really think it's unnecessary.

What we have here is failure to communicate. I'm not sure why you read into my post and put new meaning to my words. At no time did anything closely resemble:

If you're going to not get tattooed just because a forum won't tell you how much so-and-so charges per hour or how much their backpiece cost, that's just pretty sad.

I am simply wondering why all the draconian rules that resemble Free Mason secrecy is about, and not a single person will come close to explaining the reasoning of such rules. If you don't know, that's fine. To provide cryptic answers like

This forum was started by a professional tattooer, which should give you some insight into certain rules.
just deepens the mysterious it is all magic and don't dare ask culture. Sorry, I'm not that simple of a person. I'm not wanting to know any secret details or enter the sacred society of tattoo artists club, but when the rules make absolutely no sense, I have to ask about them and not blindly accept them like sheeple.

    Talk about what is unnecessary?

  12. You want to see a forum with people run off? Try thetattooforum. Seems to be set up just so about a dozen regulars can berate new folks and run them off. Only a few survive that are not in their click. I've deleted links to them in my browsers. Folks on LST are generally gentle with new folks, but if they don't read the rules and jump right in breaking them and dissing the forum...

Sorry if my post sounded the wrong way, but I' guess I'm more confused than anything, especially about the reasons behind certain rules. I'm sure there are trade secrets that artists want to protect, but some of the culture can be unique compared to most others.

  13. Having been a member of many different types of forums for almost 15 years, I must admit I've never seen one with such odd rules such as this one about not discussing the very equipment people may use to make a living, or for those interested in what is being used on their skin. Hell, you can't even mention hourly rates or tip amounts?

I can see why so many well intentioned people are run off.
