  1. man...that sounds great. might be some legal issues though??? with customers' consent and all???
  2. yes! a show like that in a street shop would be awesome. let people see the wack-job crack heads trying to sell us stolen items...dudes getting tattoos covered or added because they're going to prison in two days...gay dudes getting weird shit on them...tranny's, uptight yuppies, frat boys being pussies, drunk sports fans, hot college chicks, people getting kicked out...man i love working in a streetshop.
  3. yeah, lizzie, good points. i figure wether these shows exist or not, i'll be tattooing either way, and the fact is that they exist and a side effect of that is that they encourage people to get tattooed, so i'll take the extra business!!
  4. haha...they should just do a version of "the office" but in a tattoo shop!
  5. i heard they were starting to film that. fine by me... more ads telling people to come get tattooed!
  6. i have a big coleman dragon (like davita's from huck) on my whole back from nick colella. it has no background, so i'm putting birds around it. jen did a swallow with an envelope in its beak. nick did a swallow with a dagger through it.
  7. chad!! we still need to trade, GENT! saving a spot for you! ...anyway, just last week got a small one from jen munford, and a small one from nick rodin. finally got one from krak in july...anyway, i got a spot for mr. boltz and a spot for mr. byrne, hopefully getting one from jeff rassier in a few weeks. need more scott sylvia, more jeff zuck. oh, gotta finally get one from nikki balls too! mike wilson, brad fink, more seth ciferri...i don't know....juan puente....my son one day????
  8. true, except that this how we EARN A LIVING. sometimes imitation takes money out of our pockets. why go see Mike Wilson (to pick a random awesome tattooer), when you can have the imitation Mike Wilson in your town copy it? that's where it gets so personal. because when it comes down to it, this is our PROFESSION. this is a craft and BUSINESS. not just sitting in a room oil painting or something. you know?

    Chicago!

REckless Records has three locations, check them out. as far as the vintage clothing, there are some spots, but i don't know much about them. other than that, museums, parks, lincoln park zoo, and delicious restaurants.
  10. well...this is bound to turn into a huge mess. but, here's my take. i think we all "appropriate" things, especially those of us who follow "traditional" tattooing. by its nature, traditional or classic tattooing follows a certain code, look, and rules. we follow a lineage. most of the designs have been passed on to us through that lineage and visual heritage, and their origins are long lost, or if there was an originator, he is long dead. now, if a LIVING tattooer does something unique and original, and it's his/her own idea, and overnight, thanks to facebook, it's being copied all over the world and internet, i think that's wrong. that guy came up with something cool and new, maybe his whole own style or niche, and he's still alive, making a living. we should respect that.
  11. julio, remember as soon as we got back we called up micky sharpz and ordered powder?!?!? cuz scott said he was using it. that sharpz red is still in there, and i still have some of that powder! i remember that pile of machines, too, it blew my mind. and it looked so right in that place, wasn't it an old auto repair garage?
  12. people think i'm joking when i say i like doing tribal, too. and i've actually said to a few customers who were really freaked out "you don't HAVE to get a tattoo. i know its popular, but it's ok not to have one."
  13. definately one of the best tattoo book revues i've read. totally objective and informative. thank you.
  14. i agree, bill. and i do 99% of what comes in. there are just a couple of things that aggrivate me too much. so if someone else is available, i pass it on to them, or if its beyond my means or expertise, i pass it on to someone else, preferably in our shop. but, i do need to stop letting some things get to me too much and just do it, like inner lip tattoos. i usually turn em down because they are a pain to do, but if i just do a few more and figure out a better way to em, i win and so does the customer. and with that WAVERLY BLACK it should stick even better! (like the plug?).
  15. wow, great post, man. real interesting stuff! thanks for sharing. can't wait to see some pics.
  16. i agree, it was like time travel! we've been putting up more hand-painted flash at our shop. it adds so much to the decor and feel of it.
  17. this past june i was in LA and went to SPOTLIGHT for the first time. man, i hadn't felt that intimidated in a shop since i first went into one in the early 90's...so cool though.
  18. had dinner at a new (to me) place called NIGHTWOOD here in chicago. it was awesome. http://www.nightwoodrestaurant.com
  19. chad...you have tricks AND knowledge! lizzie, you're right, too many guys with barely five years in bitch about doing walk-ins and are fed up with customers. i don't get it, it's the best profession out there. or at 5 years in they think they are above paying a percentage and think they have their dues paid. yeah, it can be frustrating, and we all lose our cool sometimes, but at 5 years or less that's ridiculous. my first trip to san francisco, in 99, made a big impression on me. i was barely tattooing for two years and went out there with julio and our friend brian to get tattooed by scott at 222. i'll never forget walking into that shop and seeing all the HAND PAINTED flash they had up. and not just "cool" stuff, but kanji and tribal sheets they painted! while i was there juan did a tribal tattoo, and that really stuck with me. also, stopped by tattoo city and jef whitehead was doing a kanji. that was a big lesson in humility in this craft. that no matter how big a "name" you may have, you are still a tattooer!
  20. thanks for the support!

  21. glad to be here! see you in sf!
