  1. So wait, you are saying that's not glamorous???????
  2. I guess that's my point. Before becoming interested in tattoos and before joining this forum, that wouldnt have made much sense to me. Now it makes perfect sense. I am getting this first one close to home but I can see doing a trip for the next one just to make it an adventure.
  3. I have learned 2 things on this topic since joining this forum. 1. I dont NEED to travel any great distance to get a great tattoo. I have shops and artists capable of great tattoos as close as 10-15 minutes away and within an hour there are many. I am about an hour from Miami and just read somewhere that they have some ridiculously high number of shops per capita. I am sure many are crappy but there are many really good artists as well. The shop I have chosen to use is about 45 minutes from here. Like I said, there are plenty of good shops closer but I really like what I am seeing from these folks. 2. I WOULD travel to get a tattoo. I think I have come across as someone who wouldnt travel for a tattoo in other threads but the point was more that I dont need to travel to get a great one. I am fortunate to live in an area where this is the case. But as mentioned, Mike Wilson and many others at Inksmith and Rogers is about 4 hours away and I was just told about a great shop in Tampa that is about 4 hours away as well. So even though I dont NEED to travel far to get one, I COULD and certainly WOULD.
  4. The only fly fishing I have done is for bass and it's really not the same thing. You just slap on a popper of some sort and make some noise. The casting/presentation process is theraputic though. It takes a lot more focus than just chunking worms so you are definitely more involved in what you are doing. I did play a summer in Virginia and got to do some trout fishing in a small stream and enjoyed that a lot. I worked on a farm during the day and the owners of the property told me not to tell anyone about the stream and only catch what I was going to eat. So I used to go out there at lunch time and catch a trout and have her for lunch. Ahh the good old days.
  5. You could get one of those g-strings with the elephant on the front. That would be cool. And I dont know about you but I dont know that I could shave the necessary areas without causing great bodily harm. Both knick and cuts and pulled muscles.
  6. I guess the good thing is, those fish are already frozen!!!
  7. I've not actually done it but it cracks me up every time I see it. I grew up in South Florida so fishing is part of the life. We mostly fished for bass out in the woods. We didnt have a boat so most of my salt water fishing was from bridges and piers. There were many times in my life where I fished every single day in one way or another. I even used to wake up early before high school and fish for a while before school. Unfortunately, I dont do it as much as I want these days. I keep thinking I want to get one of those 2 man bass boat things that fit in my truck so I can fish the lakes near my house.
  8. Hillbilly Handfishing anyone?
  9. Although it appears that Tim Hendricks isnt taking appointments at this time. Stinks but I guess I understand. I like his work and his attitude. If I could pick one "high profile" tattooer to get one from it would definitely be Tim.
  10. I actually emailed them and they responded quickly with a very informative answer. They gave the complete lowdown on how to get an appointment with the tattooers in the shop and how to contact the "show" tattooers. They gave complete instructions including minimums. It was a great response, I was impressed. I looked at Frederico's stuff and it is great but it seems like if you make an appointment, you cant pick your artist. You just pick your time. It might be possible to contact Frederico individually and make an appointment but I"m not sure. I also emailed Inksmith and Rogers and havent heard back but I might call this week and see how to go about it. Mike Wilson is great but looking at the galleries, they dont seem to have any bad tattooers at their shops. Lot's of quality work to my eyes. A couple seemed really strong in black and grey, which is what this first one will be.
  11. True, but I have to ask price at some point to know how much to bring to the shop, right? No worries. I'm not asking for pricing help. I'll figure that out when I go talk to shops. I was just mentioning it because the topic had come up a few times. I just wanted to be clear that I'm not shopping price but I do have a budget and if the bigger names are significantly more than a quality local guy, I cant justify the extra. Others can and that is perfectly fine. I may change my mind later but for now, it has to be this way. I dont want to get the wrong reputation on the forum. I am a pretty laid back guy and have questions. I'm not a cheap ass but I cant afford to spend a grand on a tattoo right now either. Sometimes it is hard to get my personality to come across in forum print. I have total respect for everyone here. Just new to the deal and trying to learn.
  12. I would also add that I am not out looking for a cheap tattoo. I mentioned that I would be concerned that more "famous" artists would be more expensive but that doesnt mean I am not willing to pay for quality. I guess I was saying that if a really good local artist charges $300 and famous guys ask $600, then I would need to go local. My problem with price is, I have no idea what it is going to cost to get what I want. So it is difficult for me to say what is cheap and what isnt. But no, I'm not expecting to find what I want for $80.
  13. Definitely not wasting your time. I appreciate all input. And I can understand why serious tattoo enthusiasts would have a hard time believing someone wouldnt be willing to drive four hours to get a tattoo with someone like Mike Wilson but that is not exactly what I am saying. If I knew it was my only chance to get a good tattoo then it would be a no brainer. Or if the situation works out that way it would be cool. But I know there are several great tattooers closer, I just dont know how to find them. My original question was really about weeding through the many great artists within say an hour of me. I look through tons of pictures and I guess it is all starting to look the same. Maybe I just need to give it a break for a while and come back to it. I was primarily asking about what to look for in tattoos to separate the good from the great. What specifically can I look at in a tattoo to see skill? Are there some tell tale signs? It is easy to see the crap from the good or great but. There are so many, visiting all of the shops would be daunting. It's not a major crisis, I just figured I would ask here while I am getting my funds together. To be honest, if I could figure out how to do it, I would love to work with Tim Hendricks. I like his approach that I have seen in interviews and his work is my favorite at this point. But again, I dont "need" to do that to get a good tattoo. I just think it would be cool.
  14. @Lochlan - It's a good group here. There is tons of knowledge and everyone is willing to share. Good stuff.
  15. Now that made me laugh. But if that is the secret handshake, I dont think I want in anymore.
  16. That is kind of my point. I know I can get a great tattoo close to home but happen to be 4 or 8 hours away from a shop like Inksmith. I dont have to travel to get a great tattoo but it is an option. And there is no way I am going to saw off my dick.
  17. I hear you. My current situation is I am using the procedes of selling off a couple of things to pay for the tattoo. If I could talk some dumbass into buying my stuff, I'd go get it. We will see how the first goes but I have a couple of things I would like to get in addition. I dont see being really heavily tattooed but I guess some folks on here probably said that at one point as well.
  18. @Stewart Robson, I feel like a tournist too. That said, I am wasting my time with you lot while I am saving up some money for the tattoo. So as long as I am wasting my time, I might as well ask stupid questions. And my problem isnt driving 4 hours, it's paying for gas and a possible hotel room. I'd rather put all of the money I save toward the tattoo. That doesnt mean I wouldnt or wont end up driving to J-ville to see Mike but I am probably going to need some buy in from my better half on that one. I gotta say I am a little dissapointed there is no secret handshake or something. I was looking forward to the benefits of membership. And please dont take my rambling or possibly stupid questions as disrespect for what you guys do. I am actually amazed by what tattooers can do on a living canvas. I am the guy who has never been able to draw so someone who can draw or paint is impressive to me. Someone who can do it on someone's body is amazing. I honestly appreciate you taking time to offer your input on a forum like this. We (barren skinned) are certainly lucky to have this resource that includes you and others with such expertise and experience.
  19. Beautiful response. Now I am more anxious than ever. I know of Mike and that shop. Jax is about 4 hours away and I dont know that I am willing to go that far just for the tattoo. Again, my budget is small. I guess if we were going up that way for something else and I made it part of the trip it would work. I am not sure if I do care that much. What happens to me typically is I get an idea in my head and I do far more research than most people would ever do. I got into playing guitar about 5 years ago and of course learned everything about every guitar even before I could play. Same thing happened with cycling. I get obsessed and try to learn everything anytime I get interested in something. Tattoos are turning out to be no different. I honestly just want to find a good solid artist and have a good experience. It would be really cool to get one from someone with a reputation like Mike or Tim but it is not a must for me. Or maybe I'm becoming a tattoo cork sniffer before I even have one. Who knows? Thanks all for your input. It feeds my obsession.
