  1. Yup! I'll happily defer the choice to someone else, I think LES would be great though. I'm woefully behind with the bar scene anywhere outside of my neighborhood (and even then, I'm becoming an old fogey with a handful of favorites irrespective of popularity/"hipness".)
  2. Sorry I missed the where's the get-together happening bit.
  3. Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens - which borough? - - - Updated - - - Thanks!!!
  4. I'm up for it. Can I bring my yet-to-be tattooed husband?
  5. Yes to the icing! Ice is the only thing that keeps me from scratching.
  6. My appointment that was scheduled to happen last night (to start work on my thigh) was postponed only a handful of hours before the appointment due to an emergency. <insert sobs, whimpering, and other pitiful sounds here> I quelled the disappointment with tacos and margaritas.
  7. Hey GrayCatLove - was thinking about how perhaps you can work on softening up the scar tissue with something like castor oil (ie rub the castor oil into the skin/over the scars for a few mins, then apply enough to have a sheen, cover with a towel, then put a heating pad on) for a few weeks before you get tattooed. Castor oil can help break down some of the toughness. (FYI I'm not a medical professional, just a lady who has had a fairly large/dark burn from home-canning and the castor oil helped immensely.) Might allow you to start loving the imperfect beauty that you already are! If you were talking about anemones earlier - aren't they fabulous?! They even grow with white petals and green centers - not ideal for tattooing, but cool nonetheless.
  8. My bad, was a 5 hour session, first half hour was set-up, stencil application, etc. Then 4.5 hours of work-time with enough breaks to level out to be 4 hours of tattooing.
  9. Any chance chrysanthemums would work? Or anemones?
  10. My first ever tattoo session was 4.5 or 5 hours, on my right side, I don't remember exactly. Shortest to date was 3.5 hours.
  11. I have to force myself to eat a decent meal an hour or so before getting tattooed, take a long walk and pick up a bottle of water, some kind of fruit juice, and snacks on way to shop. Am always so nervous I have trouble eating the day of. I'm afraid no matter how little/much water I drink the day of, and pee before the session begins, I still have to get up mid tattoo to pee. Afterward, I get home, have a drink and some food, watch a movie, take an Advil, nap (if it's early enough in the day), countdown until I can shower, take another Advil if I'm hurting, eat dinner, then go to bed. The day before I eat really really well, not drink alcohol, drink lots of water, and go to bed early.
  12. Didn't Ed Hardy make a remark to someone (a client) once about their bad tattoo and it turned out to be their favorite/most meaningful one and he felt like a jerk? We'll never know what road someone else has walked, but I hear ya - really awful tattoos make me think "ooch, I'm lucky."
  13. My first tattoo was on my ribs, and my artist gave me this look like, "it's your first tattoo, you want it on your ribs, and how big, are you crazy?" He thanked me for sitting really well for him - so I hope that it meant that I actually sat well and not code for "you sat horribly." My first session was 5 hours with 4 hours of active tattooing time (the hour lost was stencil application, a couple of breaks, and set-up time), second session was 3 hours of tattooing if I remember correctly. For me, the first 10 mins and last 20-30mins are the worst and the outlining is way way worse than the shading. I think the kidney area is worse than the ribs, so far...
  14. LOL!!! People did that to me with: NY Adorned. "Is that the NY Ink place?" Ummmm... no, it is not the NY Ink place...
  15. I've gotten all of the above from my father, my mother is trying to remain open-minded about them. Although, she's expecting me to get little tattoos vs big ones... My father said, "well, I guess if you don't like it in 10 years you can get it lasered off." I've received the very typical "I never understood tattoos, they are so... permanent" and "why would you do that to yourself?" And, I've been asked to keep my tattoos covered up at family gatherings so as to not upset the elderly family members.
  16. I care about the balance portion to a degree. At this point, I'm getting my left outer thigh done this fall, have my right ribs done down to my lower hip/upper thigh done, and will save up for a backpiece. After that I "plan" on stopping regardless of the fact that the left thigh will be more filled out than the right thigh. I too am one of those who has to be covered up for work, which limits me (in a way) to what I want to/can do at the moment.
  17. I don't use numbing spray/cream, I use a homemade (secret recipe) herbal tincture blend that I take internally that won't mess up my blood-flow or skin's reaction. That stuff is amazing - doesn't take the pain away, just makes it more objective.
  18. In some research I've done, most often the places where people choose to get tattooed reflect areas of imbalance in the body per acupuncture and TCM theory. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with pain levels. I HATE needles, like freak out over blood drawn, vaccinations, etc to the point where I almost pass out. Tattooing, I'm okay even though I think outlining totally sucks. Acupuncture needles, I usually wince when then go in, but after that I'm okay.
  19. I really like this book: Drawing in Early Renaissance Italy: Revised Edition: Francis Ames-Lewis: Amazon.com: Books but it isn't a "how-to".

    Hello!

He's great, though I have no other comparison as I only have work from him so far. No complaints about Yoni and NY Adorned whatsoever, they're all fantastic.

    Hello!

Oh I did forget, sorry about that - multi-tasking strikes again! It's by Yoni Zilber.
  22. Getting my left thigh done by Horizakura in September, gonna be a bird (dark eyed Oregon Junco) and a peony or lotus, leaving that up to him since I already have a lotus elsewhere.
  23. I don't have a lot of work, but I typically wash the tattoo after a few hours in lukewarm water with a plain castille soap (Dr. Bronner's), then apply Aquaphor for the next 24-48 hours. I don't recover it with anything after washing. After the 24-48 hours are up with the Aquaphor, I apply a home-made healing salve and Aveeno for at least a week thereafter. Have had no color loss with this method, and the itching is more bearable. The one time I used A&D, I had so much fall-out the shading had to be redone.
