1. i respect the art of tattooing, but honestly i don't know much about the properties of how the skin holds the ink in. Which brings me to my question. I've heard of people getting tattooes to coverup scars, but depending on the size of the scar, i've also heard that it isn't recommended. Would scarred skin cause any problems for a tattooist to tattoo on? i have a small burn scar on my arm, i got it over 12 years ago from a cigarette burn that my friends and i all did on each other when we were reckless young teenagers (stupid, i know). So the scar itself is pretty old now, fully healed of course and luckily not much discoloration. the skin's texture is just different since it burned. it's pretty tiny (1 cm in diameter) and i'm thinking of having part of my next tattoo cover it up. i'm getting a rose, and i was hoping one of the dark green leaves by the rose could cover the scar. that way when people look at that part of my arm, their eyes will be drawn to the rose and not the old scar (which would be covered by one of the leaves on the side of the rose). i mentioned it to my tattoo artist and he didnt say it would be a problem. Do you guys think this example of tattooing over a scar would work out ok? Is there anything I should know about tattooing over scars? I've heard that scarred skin could be more "delicate" so that might make it harder to tattoo, but I'm hoping since my scar is so small that wouldn't be a big problem. I'd love to hear anyone's opinion. I really hope my question wasn't too nooby
2. I have yet to get my first tattoo, but am looking to put one on my side. However, I have old stretch marks in the area (across my hips that go up in straight lines on my stomach). I don't want to chance tattooing across them, however I would assume it would be ok on the unaffected skin between them. Does anyone was have experience in this area?
3. Tattoo Life Gallery Fresh ideas for your tattoos They are charging for a gallery...did they even get artist permission...and if not...oh lord. all they did is set up a database to make it easier to access designs, artists, and style in a search engine style site. Probably took them a week to put together, WTF.
4. Hi, I'm looking for suggestions as to what style of tattoo I can put on my arm to fill in the gap between my elbow and the existing eagle. I'm not sure what style wouldn't look out of place there as a random tattoo. I was thinking maybe something neo-traditional like a wolf or owl head but I want to keep to darker colors or b/g. I'm certainly not asking for someone to tell me what specific tattoo to get but more so a style or idea that would at least flow a little so I can go from there. Thank you.
5. So I know many of us are aiming for the full body look. I was curious what parts of your body you wouldn't tattoo? For me it's my face, throat and breasts. I don't think it's stupid for other people to tattoo these areas, it's just not for me. How about you?

7. by Micky Sharpz is for sale on Ebay for about £55.00. Seems a bit sharp for a dvd. Has anyone seen it, is it any good, can you recommend an alternative?
8. So about a year and a half ago I started getting my ribs done at a local shop here in MD(I'll attach a pic). The guy who started the piece is the shops owner and we developed a pretty good rapport over the sessions that I had. The last session I had was an appointment that was schedueled for 12 noon I arrived at 11:30. He didn't start working on me until 9 PM. That is the last time that I have had any work done on my piece. I should interrupt here and add that I was in the military at the time which the artist knew so I wasn't home for almost a year. This guy was always a little flaky to begin with he had lots of problems that would delay him working (read he does lots of drugs). Classic example the day that it took him almost 9 hours to start after the appointed time he said his teeth hurt and he had to run out and get some "medicine". Anyway now a year and a half later I can't get in touch with this guy I have called the shop and left messages I have gone in there and waited 2 hours to see him and nothing. I'm not bitter about him being busy that's inderstandable I'm bitter because I want to finish my ribs and he blew me off to draw a butterfly on some sorostitutes ankle. This is a shop where I have spent almost $2000 on work and this guy won't give me the time of day. Everyone who used to work at the shop has been fired or quit because they were tired of dealing with the owner. Wow this has become long and kind of a long rant but I wanted you guys to know where I was coming from on this. Anyway if anybody has bothered to read this far I guess my real dilemma/question is "When is it acceptable to find a new artist to finish my work?" Also for all of you who are artists how would you feel if someone finished one of your pieces without you? Thank you all in advance for your responses and Happy 4th of July! Matt
9. Hey I was wondering what is the best way to contact an artist as a prospective client by phone, email or another way? I have attempted to get a hold of a few artists to see if they would be willing to take me on as a client in the future. So far I haven't gotten any replies. I am trying to save and figure out logistics involved like scheduling vacation, plane tickets etc. I guess I am looking for suggestions. I know some of the artists I have contacted are really busy. I figured that email would be a safe bet as I feel a little dumb calling and taking to someone about a future tattoo. I would like to get an idea if the artist is willing to work with me and the rate so I can start to get a ball park idea of hours and cost involved. Looking for opinions thanks.
10. I got a strange call today. My appointment is in two days and my artist called me and asked me what I was getting again. He had no recollection of anything we talked about and apparently had lost all of my references. After he asked me if I was getting a custom tattoo or flash (i am getting the majority of my leg done) he hung up... Is it normal to be completely forgot about, especially on a relatively large custom piece? I am a bit nervous now since I feel he is completely unprepared for me to come in, and will have no idea until I show up. Should I be worried?
11. I'm gonna stir the pot here, and I want to be clear that this is all in an effort to understand, not confront or argue. I promise. smiling.politely posted a painting the other day and asked about pricing in his thread. The minute I saw it, I thought, "Uh oh.." But you learn a lot from year to year as you get older and while tossing up a panther head painting and asking about pricing in a forum full of curmudgeonly tattooers is not the best idea, I thought, "Shit.. I guess I won't mention my own sketchbook. Or messing around with watercolors." So, aside from trying to cash in on generally accepted tattoo designs, it comes back to this question of ownership. As far back as I can remember, I drew and I drew on myself. When I got older I bought tattoo magazines and drew designs out of there, sometimes for friends, none of whom actually got tattooed. I was definitely not a great artist. I have the utmost respect for those on here who are career tattooers. But I sit in my kitchen when I have the time, and draw. And yep, sometimes they're (poorly drawn) panthers and pharoahs horses and lady heads. Ms. Rad said something on ShannonShirley's blog: "i even draw flash in my sketchbook, but i wouldn't dare show anyone what i've created... tattooing is a whole different world, and i've come to the conclusion to not even try to understand it since i will always be an outsider" So we're all obviously outsiders. I guess the question is why we're not allowed to draw traditional designs. I draw other things, too, but I feel that tattoos have been such a part of me for so long, it's hard not to want to try drawing a panther head a new way, or get my roses down. (Damn, roses are tough..) And right now, I'm cringing just like I did when I read the post asking about pricing for the painting because I almost don't want to read the responses. I'm sure smiling.politely didn't mean to insult anyone. I hope I'm not insulting anyone. One of the great things about LST is us regular civilians get to learn. I still remember Alanna's post about going from watching tattoo tv shows to learning about Amund Dietzel and getting a Dietzel tattoo from Nick Colella (I think it was). So.. if no one is trying to take money out your mouths, and someone shows an interest in the art side of it, why assume the worst? All tattooers were the same regular folks before, drawn to art, enamored with tattoos, drawn to it all for whatever reason. And I think there's something to be said for defending your craft so vehemently. Tell me to fuck off and die if you want, but this probably won't stop me from continuing to draw. Because unless someone straight up copies, nobody owns "panther head" or "pair of swallows." If they did, nobody would have been tattooing them for the last hundred years. Hope I didn't offend anyone, just trying to understand.
12. I now work in a shop where the staff all wear uniforms... Not like a Taco Bell uniform or anything, but a shop t-shirt, black shorts and black shoes. Not bad really, but this is the first time, I've worked at a place with a uniform policy. Has anyone ever been to a place like this? Whether or not you have, what are your thoughts on uniforms in a studio environment?
13. To start off as of right now I have no tattoos. I have been trying to get a tattoo for awhile but money or other issues have cropped up. Two weeks ago I got in touch with an artist and signed up for a leg piece. (starting at the foot to the knee filled in completely. My friends said that was "too much for a first", but the funny thing is I am already looking at getting another huge piece started by a favorite artist, and the possibility of sleeve by the same guy by next year. Although the sleeve is a bigger step since I work in a VERY Conservative field (Wall St) and will need to think more about that. Am I going way to fast? I personally don't believe so
14. A thought which I often think about then over the past twenty-fours hours have been really thinking about due to Tattoo Dex and her viral video of the 152 facebook friend tattoo sleeve is tattooers with little to no tattoos. I think this is a heavy weight for me on whether or not I would get tattooed by someone. I'm not saying they need to have hands, fingers, neck, face, head, etc but at least some good visible tattoos for me to know they get it. Or I don't know if "get it" is the right word but they have taken the time to get good tattoos and can do good tattoos. They have done and are doing their time It is like many of the tattooers on here have said over and over again to those interested in getting into tattooing "get tattooed by good tattooers". Plus the million other suggestions and deterrents they have said but anywho.......Would you get or have you been tattooed by a tattooer with little to no tattoos? Thoughts? Experiences? Also here's the video if you missed it in our other thread:
15. I did a lot of shopping for an artists work I like. We spent about 10 minutes discussing the design I am interested in. The design isnt crazy. But I am curious to see how he is going to lay out the nebula I am looking for. I am NOT an artist. I picked this guy because I love his work. I made my appointments in April. My first appointment is June 6th. My question is...is it appropriate to stop into the shop and discuss my design with him again before my first appointment? I thought I could swing by when he has a bit of downtime and bring in a small gift or something (like a decent bottle of tequila or something). I guess I dont want him to forget what we discussed...on the other hand...I dont want to be "that guy". I dont want to be a pain in the ass. Thanks.
16. I have booked the flight and I am currently booking appointments with the artists who I want to get tattooed by in the bay area. So, is there anything I should try to see or do while visiting? I know there are many SF residents on this board, so I'm hoping you guys can give me some tips. I'm visiting the third week of September by the way.
17. There seems to be a recurring topic on LST around "tattoo etiquette" that has come up over and over again from tattoo customers to tattooers to tattoo shops to tattoo designs to tattoo websites and the list goes on and on for various ways tattoos play a role in society today. So I though it could be an insightful and helpful platform to start a tattoo etiquette specific thread. For those who want to see other threads and blogs on this tattoo forum and ezine where this theme comes up type it into the search bar and you will find some good stuff LSTers have contributed. Its a theme that I don't think can be discussed enough. The purpose of this is to provide a quick list type thread for people to read and learn about how to best "support" or be a part of tattooing. It comes from an old phrase "Intention VS. Outcome". I think many peoples intentions are good and not hurtful, however, the outcome often times is not what is meant. Multiple perspectives are going to arise regardless and there will never be everyone happy and/or supportive but if a foundation is created or rather discussed then maybe it can provide a more accurate perspective on how to be a positive person in the world of tattooing and maybe life as a whole. This could be from a first and/or only time customer to a long time tattooer or tattoo customer to how the "press" and companies interact with the world/craft of tattooing. When I first started this thread I was going to create a list of questions but now feel it best to just let everyone have at it how you interpret and act on the above or other stuff. Thanks and we look forward to hearing everyones ideas and ways they support tattooing with I dare say the word integrity........
18. Hey everyone, I've been thinking about difficult areas of the body to tattoo and wonder if anyone had any advice? I think the throat is one of the hardest as the head and shoulders make it difficult to reach and it's hard to stretch. Does anyone have any tricks or tips to share about tattooing the throat?
19. A few weeks back Conspiracy Inc. in Copenhagen tweeted a comment something along the lines of needing to watermark their tattoo pictures. So I responded how it is also nice when tattooers watermark tattoo pictures so as they travel the internet those of us who want to know can know who did the tattoos. I know I often am sent tattoo pictures with no tattooer or tattoo shop information which frustrates me. Or wandering the internet looking for tattoo pictures and see some amazing tattoos but have no way of knowing who did them and/or where. The reason I and I know others want to know who did the tattoos is so we can know who is doing good tattoos and give them the credit they deserve plus the of course enjoyment from looking at great tattoos. Also now with this tattoo forum we want to give the tattooers credit when we stumble across their work and post the photos on the site so others can know as well. We, LST, often look at other tattoo sites, forums, blogs, etc and see "too many" of them have some pretty bad tattoos posted which equates to, if these tattoos are the majority of what customers see the bar can not be set. Hence one of the reasons we started this tattoo forum so tattoo customers can see there is no need to settle for below par tattoos. This site is to try and give the tattooers credit who intrigue us and in return so they not only get more work but also so tattoo customers can get better tattoos. So with that tattoo ramble, we start the Tattoo Watermark thread for both tattooers and tattoo customers. To watermark or not? Stories? Etc...............
20. A recent thread from a customer's point of view got me to thinking------ as a tattooist, how do you treat visitors to your shop who are also tattooists. Have you been treated well or horribly when visiting other people's shops? I know that the poor treatment that ive received stopping in at a shop has shaped the way That I treat visitors.
21. Something I've been mulling over for years, and after watching that interview with Bryan Burk ,kinda solidified it, but how important is it for you to know exactly where your supplies come from. Really trying to gauge this as how much effort is worth it to be honest with ourselves about who we get needles, ink, grips, even something as simple as grommets from? I know on a personal level who I've bought machines from, and I pretty much only use pigment I've made, someone I work with has made, or Waverly , whom is run by a amn I call a good friend( and Bill's stuff is the best, I've been in his 'lab' and it's top- notch). But I've stopped making needles these past two-three years. Spent a couple bucks and ordered them directly from the factory in China that makes EVERYBODIES needles..Simple things like that. I can buy a 24$ "Eikon style" power supply, but do I ( We?) really want to support that, and in a sense, "cheapen" what we do? Should we all stop being so lazy, and try and rekindle that DIY spirit that tattooings all about? Also, if anyone wants to offer up venues to recommend where someone can buy supplies made for tattooers, by tattooers..that would be appreciated.
22. Just wondering how you tattoo artist view your customers? i have always noticed a "im too cool attitude" by every artist that ive been tattooed by, I get the feeling that a customer is just a john or trick if you will, kinda like a prostitute views there clients, ya know with a complete lack of respect for there customers and just wanting to get your money. It seams like all the "artists" that ive encountered sees me as a drawing board with a pocket book, usually the artist is talking to another artist the whole time he is tattooing me and if i participate in the conversation at all I either get ignored or looked at funny and responded to in a curt manor, is this the normal attitude in this industry? (Take this for instance - i made a apointment with a artist earlier in the week for saturday 12:30, i showed up at 1230 sharp, and the helper said oh hes gunna do a tat really quik than get to me, ok i said", if it wasnt for wanting to get tattooed by this man for years, i would have just left right on the spot, but i stayed and about 45mins go by and the helper is going around asking the tattooers if they wanted some coffee or something to eat because she was going out to the coffee shop, I was thinking boy i hope she asks me if i want a cup of coffee, i sure am thirsty, but she just walked right past me like i wasnt there. 30 more min goes by and she gets back and everyone takes a coffee/ lunch break, the artist takes a break and about 20 more mins go by, by than its been two hours ive been waiting and im pretty thirsty, so i ask the helper if there is a coffee shop near by? she says - "oh hes ready to tattoo you know". Im not out to bargin hunt some rinky dink skull or sumething, I dropped 300 on the piece and didnt have any requests or stupid placement of the tat, so i know im not difficult in any way. I am very happy with the tattoo and i even tipped the artist, because i like the piece he did, he was also a nice guy to talk to, and he didnt have the cool guy tude most have. I would get tattooed again by him maybe just not at that shop, i guess he works at other shops so.) Its funny how many times I have felt disrespected in one way or another while at a tattoo shop when i really think back on the experiences ive had in the past. Im almost to the point that id rather get a shitty tattoo but a good experience rather than the other way around, either that or just smack the motherfucker right in his mouth right when i feel disrespected by the "cool guy tude" For the record I am a very easy going guy, i dont judge peolpe, I dont think im better than anyone, and I am willing to talk to anyone no matter how different they are, but i get the feeling alot of tattooers dont think that way? its like they are in this cool guy society and regular people just are not cool enough to respect, almost like a form of racism against non tattooers? If I could get your guys take on how you see customers and the way you think they should be treated please do tell? -
23. what are your thoughts on the use of slang and terms that folks use to try and make tattooing sound cool? as an example i don't like the use of the terms tat, tats, or tatted up. i think that the word tattoo is cool enough and has always had a certain power to it. there's not really a need to attempt to make it sound cooler or clever by shortening it or adding z's instead of s's. i don't like gun for a tattoo machine either, but do find it amusing when people use it and sometimes i'll say "do you mean a tat gat?" so are there terms that you do or don't like as well as does it give you an idea of the type of person you're talking to when you hear them use certain slang?
24. I got a tattoo on my forearm 6 months ago. Just recently, I've started developing small bumps under the ink. About the size of pimples. Not painful, but a little tender to the touch. Not all over, just scattered. The tattoo was done in a reputable shop and healed without any problems. I tried to diagnose myself via Google, which is never a good idea!! Found info that suggested it could be scarring or an infection or an allergy. I'm probably freaking myself out unnecessarily (reading medical stuff on the internet will do that too you!) and hopefully it's something simple! So, a question to the amazing tattooists and collectors who frequent this site - do you know what this is? And how can I treat it? Thanks!
25. I can't help obsessing over it and my husband/ tattoo partner is tired of hearing about it I'm sure but I need to vent. Some background---- In 2000 my husband and I moved to Alaska and tattooed at a shop in Anchorage. We bought a house in a small suburb ( pop.30,000) about 20 miles from where we worked. About 2 1/2 years ago we decided to leave the shop where we worked and with the blessing of our boss and coworkers, opened our own shop. Our town, Eagle River has a business district just a couple of miles long.4 stop lights. We are off the main drag and fit in with our neighbors, a church, our children's school and a realtor. We keep a low profile but have a good clientele and a good reputation. Well it has come to my attention that a new shop is in the process of opening . A guy and his apprentice. Neither of them live in our town. My issues---- yes, everyone is entitled to make a living but they don't even live here, to my knowledge they've never been in to our shop. They don't care that I have 4 kids or the hard work and $ we've put in to our business .He has a terrible personal history and I can't help but feel like the good rep that we have is now endangered, merely by association. I ve been following his progress through his posts on facebook. I'm not happy
