  1. Thesandmanisme, that is good advice I think. Though, I have recently gotten into the idea of having some sort of tattoo in relation to my husband. On my right ring finger. Either his initials, or our date of marriage, something like that. I never thought that was a good idea, but recently it's begun to grow on me. I like the idea, of when I"m old, having this old faded tattoo to look at, and remember when we were young. But yeah, it is risky, since I know damn well things can change. So I don't know if I'll ever do it, but boy do I want to!

When my wife and I got married I got tattooed on my ring finger Mr for mister and she got Mrs on her ring finger. I will always be a MR even if I am not married!

"The only woman's name you get tattooed on you is, mama!"

  2. I'm super interested in this stuff too. @Dhopper, when you say ratios, do you mean: "one third black, one third color, one third skin" -- cos that's something I've heard, but I guess it doesn't just apply to Japanese. I love Shige's work, but his tattoos are so dense, there's barely any skin showing -- so does that make his style less "traditional?" I'm not a tattoo artist, just trying to soak up knowledge wherever I can find it.

Yes I have heard of that ratio. I don't know because I am not a Japanese tattooer. People on here should not be giving technical info on a public forum. Example why is a guy that just bought a kit and now is on this forum! My kit was a rollomatic, Dan Dringenberg grips and tips, and a Tattooer that was telling me what I am doing wrong and why! In a tattoo shop!

Why do you do this..... Why does it run like this..... Answer- shut the fuck up and watch! Don't talk and just listen!

    I digress..

This should be another thread anyways!

    Dave Navarro rules! Haha:o

  3. Personally I don't totally agree ,and think a lot of what's going on right now the distinction is really blurred . I think Horiyoshi III's post 80's to more recent stuff looks more Western and guys like Ivan Szazi and Chris Brand as examples more Japanese than some Japanese if that makes sense .

Not to go into much detail but it is about ratios. Yes, horiyoshi 2 is who I think is most Japanese than horiyoshi 3's style.

Filip and mick and shige is more European Japanese.

Brand did Ben grillos back right?

  4. There is a lot and I mean a lot more than what you said GSJoe. You can love art but you are not going to try and be Caravaggio! Where are you at GSJoe? Before you even started tattooing fruit you need to draw! When you are tired of drawing, draw some more! Draw and draw. Then go in to a tattoo shop and show those drawings. Go home and draw some more. You see where I am going here GSJoe? After all that drawing, you may, going back into that shop and show them your new drawings. If they like them than you will be taught how to draw! " You have to past the first grade before you can go to the second grade!" Peck

  5. I honestly believe that Nunez does average Japanese stuff. I think part of the reason people think he knows his shit is because he worked with Garver for quite some time. I am not saying he makes bad tattoos, I am saying though, that they are not deserving of being on the same level as Rubendall, Travino, etc... I felt it was a little insulting to Rubendall when he put himself on the same level when he was on Inkmaster.

Those two guys put in the work. Nunez may be still learning but I still would not mind him tattooing me. He is not the best but it is also not something that is done 100 percent correct to Japanese culture. Ed did it the best and people followed his lead.

  6. Ontario has plenty, and good ones! My little city, not so much. Actually for my first tattoo I went over the river to Buffalo since that was the closest place I found someone who could do quality traditional work.

Oh I see, it is like saying I live in New York City but actually New Jersey! I am just messing with you. You got me. Maybe not every single town but every major city has a good tattooer.

  7. Well, the town I live in has one shop and one tattooer. You willing to bet that he can do a good tattoo? ;)

For my two tattoos so far I've gone to very good tattooers that aren't at what I'd call famous shops. My next tattoo will also be at a non-famous shop, then my (likely) next after that WILL be.

Canada sucks anyway! Just a bunch of toothless hockey players, eating maple syrup, and sedated from you guy's health care! :p

    Ontario only has one tattooer?

  8. Every town and I do mean every town has at least one good, maybe not great, person that can do a good tattoo. It may not be your " style" but can tattoo a technically good tattoo.

I'm just trying to get tattoos done by the best tattooers possible. Whether or not they are in a famous shop is incidental.

Kind of an oxymoron there. The best tattooers are not at shitty studios for a reason! A famous shop does not become famous ( whatever famous means) by doing shitty tattoos!

Firth Street is a famous shop and has what people might call famous people tattooing there. I know if you say Valerie or Stewart's name at a tattoo shop, 90 percent will know who you are talking about! Especially with Instagram and Facebook.

  9. It was weird last night, I was trying to sleep and I thought I should make a thread about artist that passed away and were still young that impacted people today! I never met Lee but I saw this morning @jenniferstell posted about Lee and had to write at least this to say he is still remembered.

Two other guys I never met but still hear about Eric Masaake and Eric Hogan.
