hayyy! Just had my first 7 hour session about 4 days ago on my back. Man, the butt cheek HURT! I could do the back all day though. I'd have to say the itching right now is definitely the hardest part of getting this large piece. Still have a few more long day ahead before this baby is complete.

Yes and yes. 2 good friends have been to him and their tattoos are amazing. One in particular had a tattoo re-done/re-worked by him and I've seen the before and after pictures so I'm very excited.

I believe there's almost nothing a good coverup artist can't make shine. There are artists out there who specialize in coverups, you know :)
I'll use electriclinda here in Norway as an example:

I've been an illustrator for nearly 20 years and now I'm running away from the world of commercial art and making the move into tattooing.
Hopefully I don't annoy people because I have MANY questions. I've included a couple of my illustrations.

JazzyMac reacted to tpm15 in Hello! Looking for advice on mandala on front and side of feet
    Hi everyone,
I want to get a mandala tattoo on my feet as my first tattoo.
I want my mandala spread across both feet, that extends to the inner sides of the feet as well (see reference pictures attached).Might the side of the foot fade more than the top of the foot, giving my tattoo a different aspect across the foot?
For the color, I hesitate between a black tattoo or a dark blue tattoo. Which color is more likely to stay vivid over the years? And is there anything I should know about dark blue tattoos?
PS: if anyone has picture of a similar tattoo I'd love to see it!
    Thank you very much :)

    Hi i'm new here!
Signed up because i'm at a complete lost of what to do about my coverup tattoo that covered up the baby angel (see pic).
I love the hibiscus but hate how the peony flower came out. I hate the yellow and I think the peony is positioned weirdly. The yellow represents the inside of the peony.
So i'm torn because i'm stuck with a half-loved tattoo and i'm having such a hard time finding examples of tattoos that go along with the hibiscus because it isn't a "realistic" tattoo but it also isn't too cartoonish.
1# question: should I change the yellow to blue OR what other color do you think would match?
2#: Would it be possible to cover it up with something else? (I've ran out of creative ideas)
3# any recommended coverup artists in FL, the USA or Europe?

Oh okey thanks, I was too worried and I went to a dermatologist and she checked and said it's nothing but watch it carefully in following days and come back if you find anything unusual. But you know I am over concerned about it. But thanks for your reply.

I'm always surprised by the wait list some artists have Vs. some that don't have as big of one. A longer wait list doesn't always mean a better tattoo. However, it can if you've chosen the right person to do it. I guess it all comes down to what you prefer. I'd be willing to wait a long time for certain people but I worry that some people equate a long wait list to greater quality when that isn't always the case.

My artist (Christy at Blue Flame Tattoo in Raleigh) has a typical waitlist of 5-6 months.  I had viewed her work online and on a couple of her clients, and her work was what I had been looking for for years.  It turned out that she had a cancellation and i got my first tattoo after waiting only a month.  But now that I know her work firsthand, I would wait a year, albeit impatiently, for an appointment with her.  For me it's about the artistry, the personal compatibility, and the shared vision.  I thought I wanted only one tattoo, but now I'm working on a sleeve.
Your artist's work is beautiful!  Will you be able to have a consultation in less than a year?  For me it was really important to sense a rapport with my artist.  I'm lucky that I found a Tesla artist without a Tesla waiting list.

UPDATE: Well, today was the day!
What a long, but great day! It began a little before 11:00am. I was the first one in the shop with Scott (most of the day, there were 10-15 people there, and at one point six artists were tattooing simultaneously). He had been working on a few designs based on the sleeve length I wanted. Over the week between today and our consultation, I had decided to ask him to put the dragon's head somewhere on my arm instead of with the head in the more traditional chest area. I was a little worried to be asking for this, as Scott has a relatively new sleeve with the head in the center, and the last thing I wanted was for him to think I was trying to copy his own tattoo. Luckily, when I got there, he informed me that the last several dragons he had done had the head on the chest, and he was dying to do something new. Perfect! His sketches had just what I wanted. It was a really good sign.
However, getting it right took some time. Using thin paint brushes, he created the design over four separate layers. The dragon's head had to be moved several times, and the unique swirl of the dragon we decided on what difficult to get right without looking like the head was plopped onto the center of the body... but Scott is a perfectionist, and after a lot of erasing and revising, and then relining, and revising, etc... we were finally done with a design ready to be inked at 2:40. With only a few short breaks, it took a lot longer than I expected. But the result is something that works specifically with my body as opposed to just slapping a template onto my arm. I love it.
Here is a quick snap of Scott somewhere between layer 2 and 3 of sketching on me:

I haven't had a tattoo in nearly 20 years, so I had no idea what to expect from the pain, especially over so many areas. Tattooing in the ditch was no treat, but not as bad as I had come to expect from reading. The outside of the elbow lived up to expectations. But the worst was around my collarbone, where any wincing or tightening of my face would risk pulling the skin under his needle. And there was one spot on my chest where I could clearly feel the vibration on my pec, but the pain was in my neck. I could have sworn at the time he was tattooing my upper-middle neck.
Long story short (yeah, right), we finished up the linework a little after 5:00pm. I am absolutely thrilled with the result... and was getting tons of compliments on it by the many artists and clients in the shop throughout the day. Here is a front shot:

It is a little difficult to see from this angle and with only linework, but the dragon's body actually goes out the back of the head and swirls up and around the shoulders through the clouds and comes out belly showing under his head before turning again towards the end of the sleeve. It makes a little more sense visually if you can see the back. I also have the dragon clutching a pearl with his talons on the back on the sleeve and will actually be filling the pearl with a significant flower logo in the next session.
Overall, a fantastic day. I couldn't be happier that Scott got all the elements I wanted into the design, was able to keep it very traditional, but also with a great deal of uniqueness built just for me. If any readers are in Austin, Triple Crown Tattoo on Chicon Street (right around the corner from Franklin's BBQ!) is a must-visit.

I think it's healed really nicely, the saniderm is the mutts nuts and worked really well for me, it's only been 2 and a bit months but it's settled down really well and I'm still happy, I'll get a photo of it later :D
