it's not so much that i hate it but i just don't get why so many young girls give me the ol' 'i want it facing ME...it's about ME' when doing their little wrist tattoos. now i just say 'cool, so you want it upside down then? ok'. hahaha

there's probably no need for a female tattooer thread. i tend to steer away from 'all-girl' events, ive been asked to be part of all girl tattoo projects (art shows, books etc) and conventions but personally i feel that in certain cases all that does is not strengthen female artistry or bonds, its a selling point for perverts or people who think female tattooers 'have a gentler touch'.
ive had a couple of instances where i'm simply not comfortable tattooing a man whether it's just due to their topics of conversation, pervy remarks or general air about them. even when women hit real hard of men tattooers its just never as creepy as when a guy does it to a woman, it's just a different type of uneasiness. my response to this is usually to be forward and serious and to let them know it wont be tolerated, and if it continues i make my excuses to not tattoo them, i dont enjoy feeling uncomfortable in my own turf.
about the magazine covers. women are pretty to look at, you put a woman on a cover you will sell double what you would if you put a man instead. magazines are businesses and they like to make money. back in the early 90's you could still buy a tattoo magazine with men on the cover every now and then but i guess when today you have hundreds of young, gorgeous, tattooed girls (some of them not even wanting a pay cheque just the glory of being on the cover is good enough for them) queuing up to be your cover girl who's gonna care about being more equal?

Yes, that book has been a great resource for info. This book would not have been possible without Chuck Eldridge and Dana Brunson. So many people have been very helpful in piecing together everything. Right now I think we are close to having all the material needed for the book but we are still trying to track down any photographs of Zeis (they are hard to come by). One thing we really need is an original copy of a Zeis supply catalog. The one I have is a copy and I want to scan a few things off the OG catalog. If anyone has one you would be willing to loan me for use in the book please contact me. Here is a small list of artists (not all, still working out the details) that are contributing paintings of commercial flash sold by Zeis.
    Scott Sylvia
    Theo Mindell
    Scott Harrison
    Chad Koeplinger
    Jason Brooks
    Robert Ryan
    Timothy Hoyer
    Mike Wilson
    Tim Lehi
    Nick Colella
    Valerie Vargas
    Stewart Robson
    Bryan Burk
    Steve Byrne
    Tony Hundahl
    Nick Rodin
    Jay Chastain
    Danny Reed
    Shag
    Cory Lenherr
    Aaron Coleman
    Jay Chastain
    Thomas Morgan
    Charlie Roberts
    and a bunch more...
Again its humbling how many people have been willing to help with this project. Zeis's influence on the tattoo world is much greater than I had expected. I hope we can do him justice and preserve his legacy for others.

times have changed and there are a lot of people now getting tattooed who shouldnt be. because they are doing for the wrong reasons, that being the popularity factor. these people would never have gotten tattooed 5-6 years ago and probably looked down their noses at those of us who do have them. because they dont actually love tattoos and dont really want them at their core being. they are never going to be happy with any thing most of the time. so its important to know who you're dealing with. or like you said maybe they just picked the wrong guy for the job and had different expectations or they could have picked the right guy but did not explain thouroughly what the want. I for example approach tattoos in many different way some times i appraoch a pinup from sailor jerry's mindset and sometime i go in a chris conn direction with tighter details and what not so i a;ways ask my client how trad vs rendered they wanted. or maybe he did overstep his limitations but thats a neccessary eveil if he is ever to grow beyond his limitations. what i would evaluate is whether he is turning out consistantly good confident tattoos. we all have unhappy clients from time to time so its important to look at the big picture. talk with him and see what he thinks the problem is. if it's just a personal taste issue and its not his tattoo ability that is in question im sure y'all can figure it out. if he's just doing bad tattoos that are drawn and/or tattooed badly then thats a lil more complicated. anyway what im really saying is I just dont know.

"tribal" is the ultimate traditional style. I have had the great pleasure of tattooing many of our local Native Americas, with their imagery. It's a real honor to make these tattoos. While these tattoos have a fashion aspect to them, they seem about as "real" as it gets to me. Whenever I work on these folks, it makes me think of the rest of what I do as kind of corny.
