Yaaay! Hi @JoshRoss! I live in the Bay Area too and it is totally BRUTAL living so close to sooo many awesome artists. Welcome! I love your Beau Brady Lady (Justice?) and I am a huge Jill Bonny fan! I am so excited to see what she does. :)

This is an interesting thread!
I always exfoliate and moisturize but 2 weeks before I intensively exfoliate and moisturize the going-to-be-tattooed area.
The week before I focus on drinking at least 2L of water of day to make sure my lymph is moving well and no sugar or caffeine.
The day of I try to eat well but not heavily, bring snacks if it runs more than 2 hours and after I want some kind of massive protein and starch mega meal. 5 Guys, lettuce-wrapped, bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries is my favorite. (Unless I am at Spider Murphy's than I want Sol Food Puerto Rican and in Berlin I ate the most gigantic plate of schnitzel and spaetzle ever...but y'all get the idea).
Sometimes I wash that night sometimes I don't but I definitely whine a lot and get crabby for the next 24-36 hours....which is really the most important part of the ritual. The whining and crabby-cakes. My husband loves it.

I'm not really a ritual guy but I do have some preferences. Ideally I would get a good nights sleep and have time to get to the gym for a workout a few hours before the appointment. After this I like to eat a good meal- not to big but enough to tide me over. I also like to take a shower right before I leave home if possible. Then it's all about relaxation and distress tolerance skills. Like others have mentioned- focused breathing during the tattoo is important. It works at the dentist too.
Afterwards I will be pretty pumped up so I like to party. We have had friends over a few times on tattoo day and that works well (especially when my wife and I both get tattoos on the same day- which is very fun). Beer will be involved. It's a day I have been looking forward to so I like to make it fun all around.
My wife and I have appointments at Great Lakes Tattoo in Chicago next week while on vacation so it will be difficult to adhere to a specific routine. We plan to be pretty chill the night before but I'm guessing we will have a lot of fun afterwards. Obviously I am looking forward to it.

I'm Josh, from just outside of San Jose. I'm not sure what makes a good introduction post, so this will have to do.
I got my first tattoo almost 3 months ago after 7 years of talk. I've always liked tattoos, but I never could quite figure out what it was that I liked about them. One of my good friends started his apprenticeship at a local shop and I think that helped refined my taste. After I got settled in at my new job I decided to commit to it. I get my fourth tattoo this weekend, and start my sleeve in two weeks!
It's awesome living in the Bay Area and being around so many great artists. I'm stoked to start my collection.
I'm also into stand-up comedy and cool clothes.

While we generally don't like to talk specific numbers/prices around here, I would say it makes sense. Most people have no idea what a quality tattoo costs. It is going to be on you for the rest of your life - going cheap makes no sense at all.
