  1. Wow - I haven't read this thread for several weeks and the last 7 or 8 pages have been pretty heavy. @beez - wow, first (((hugs))) and I echo what so many have already said. What a kick in the stomach. What's worse sometimes, is realizing after the fact that someone has been slowly changing their thinking over years and you've been out of sync with that, even though you spend so much time together. So for them, they are just verbalizing a feeling they've developed and carried over that time and it may come across as no big deal. But for you, that progression never occurred because you never thought it was an issue. My first thought was, what a douche bag. I'm really saddened that you had to go through this - you are a wonderfully thoughtful person and I enjoy reading your posts. It seems like lately in a couple of threads there are discussions of getting old with tattoos and using tattoos to correct the negative effects of aging. It probably wouldn't be feasible, but wouldn't a great thread be to show before and after pictures? My back tattoo completely obliterates any embarrassment I had over some unsightly sagging areas. - - - Updated - - - @ProudButUgly - what a story. Thank you for sharing that. There are so many things I'd like to say about what you wrote, but ultimately it comes down to your family at this point. I'm really glad you had this opportunity to work with your kids and show them both sides of the petty junior high school attitudes. They will carry this forward with them and hopefully be able to apply it to other situations where they see people marginalized. I hope all goes well with your wife and that your offers to cover up as she requests help her overcome whatever negative effects she thinks your tattoos have on her career, etc. So much of life is compromise, but she's probably not going to like dealing with all the blood on the couch after you chop off your legs. Sorry - a little humor, but I really hope this settles and works out for you both.
  2. I was thinking clipper ship too. It has many possible meaning that could be relevant and implies motion - moving to or from something, the journey itself, etc. Movement could be the opposite of being alone (standing still).
  3. If you haven't already, wander over the http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/general-tattoo-discussion/5371-ladies-thread.html. I think it's this thread, but there is a discussion somewhere about the use of tattoos for "cosmetic surgery" - my "back flap" is very nicely hidden in the dorsal fin of an eel! I swear, I need some bicep tattoos to deal with the dreaded batwings.
  4. If you post an intro thread and mention what you are looking for and where you are located, I am sure you will get suggestions on artists in your area.

  7. This might not be completely relevant, but there are discussions about watercolor tattoos and their ability to hold over time. The similarity with your question is that these and your thoughts are for tattoos that do not have black. Maybe you might find something useful searching "watercolor tattoos." Here is a start in the middle of a thread: http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/general-tattoo-discussion/2396-what-makes-good-tattoo-page27.html#post112953
  8. @bongsau - I just noticed your .sig. Lovin' it! You are VERY well on your way!
  9. A cheese grater takes much less space in the cabinet.
  10. This might warrant its own thread, but I though it would be good to keep it in a medically-relevant thread. The article is not dated, but it contains references from May 2014 so it's relatively new. A case of overdose via tattoo in the Journal of the Intensive Care Society Abstract Transdermal fentanyl patches are used frequently for the management of both acute and chronic pain. Adverse events with their use, in particular overdose, are not uncommon. We describe a case of fentanyl overdose from transdermal patch placed over a five-day old tattoo. The report will review the pharmacology of transdermal fentanyl and the physiology of tattooing, as well as the potential link between the two, which may have lead to the overdose A 56 year old male had a new tattoo - 5 days old, and he applied a fentanyl patch to the healing skin. Normally fentanyl creates a pool or "depot" in the epidermis before slowly migrating through the dermis. This allows the slow onset time and long half-life. Since the healing wound of the tattoo damaged the epidermis, the drug was able to reach the dermis more quickly, resulting in an increased serum concentration. Obviously, this is a method used for abuse of the drug and the delivery system. This man had a prior inadvertent overdose by putting on a new patch without removing the old one. It's not hypothesized if the application over the tattoo was intentional.
  11. That's a good idea. I'd like to just stuff the edge of something into the sleeves like a Batman Cape!
  12. I am sorry that you feel this way. I have seen several people say the same thing, and it really stinks that people are declining to post pictures of their tattoos because they think they will get yelled at, or because traditional is felt to be more popular here. (BTW - I have no traditional or Japanese tattoos). It may be because these styles are thought to have more longevity in terms of content and readability over time, so that gets more air time, and other styles get ripped apart because they are thought to age less well. Or even that people might think their tattoos aren't "top quality" and will be judged accordingly. Please post.
  13. Some of the soul-bearing raw stuff is pretty good. Your post read so artistically to me. Realizing that I like coloring So much more than line work. Edit: I take that back. Please put me out of my misery.
  14. Me too. This place as taught me a lot. I have a much better appreciation of the style and that there are not coloring book tattoos. I love the butterflies and moths. Thanks for the list of other artists to look at, @cltattooing. All of them are pretty darn good, but I really like Aidan Monahan's stuff.
  15. Done. What is the topic of the project specifically? It seems like it has a medical or side-effects bent. Just curious. Good luck with it! Also, you might get more responses here if you posted this as a new thread - did you go over to the Initiation thread and post it there?
  16. Congratulations @Breakme! And @sophistre too on decreasing sizes (I'm assuming that's a good thing.) Mine is the opposite - I don't want tattoos showing at work, and the sides of my backpiece stick out the edges of sleeveless dresses. Which I love to wear. UGH! There are so many beautiful dresses, but very few that have a cap sleeve, which works a bit better. So, I now have to wear little sweaters. In the summer. But there are a couple of my dresses that come close to matching the tattoo in color and almost design (darker, sort of abstract color changes) so I can make sweaterless dashes to the bathroom and cafeteria if I stand up straight, push my shoulders back and don't cross my arms. Kinda funny, I think.
  17. Wow - interesting. That just added some new human factors issues to the requirements!
  18. That is SUCH a good idea. Are you using an app? I need to do this. Now. :D
  19. Clearly, to best participate in this thread, since you are a tattooer, is to go get some fruit!
  20. Wow - I don't check in for a couple days and madness ensures! @SStu - that is beautiful and I love how it flows with all the negative space. Nice one - she's a lucky one. @pidjones - cool! I'm so happy you walked out with one you love right off the bat, after your frustrations with the faked line. @bedoktime - killing it. That is a most awesome panther - I can't stop laughing! @L2DB - I am so glad you came back with the final tattoo - you should go back to your first thread and put it there, too to complete the thread. I wondered how that would turn out, and I really like how the woodblock came through, especially at the bottom. Are you talking about what looks like snow covered mountains? I took that to be clouds in the sky at first glance. As for the shading, one technique for something like this - a scene - is to fade it off on the edges. If you have hard edges around the outside, it can make the scene look like a picture, or seem like you are looking out a window rather than being out in the scene.
  21. I could see myself becoming a victim to trends. On one hand, I love the birds with light lining - the ones that are sort of geometric and sort of watercolor. Don't know what they are called. If I started getting tattooed more regularly, I might get one of those. Knowing they may not last well. One the other hand, I have completely jumped on board the Monmon Cat trend. So, yeah, that is becoming a trend, especially since others are starting to mimic/copy Horitomo's work.
  22. ...so it's good to sit like a rock but bad to sit like a grapefruit.
