I've been looking at a lot of tattoo cover-up pictures recently and figured it'd be cool to see what cover-ups LSTers have both gotten as well as tattooed. So if you have before and after pictures please post them up.
Here's a recent one I found on Sarah Schor's Blog from King's Avenue in New York. I really like the use of the hair in this lady head to cover-up the old tattoo lettering.
For me I enjoy seeing cover-ups that could stand on their own without being a cover-up. What I mean is yes the old tattoo is not visible but had you not had to have it placed where it is you would get in anywhere and anyways.

Come on Matthew we all want to help you get better tattoos that you will be over the moon with. There are world class, highly respected tattooers that frequent these forums and a plethora of tattoo enthusiasts with a wealth of knowledge in the culture of tattoos. I can almost certainly tell you by adding more stars or text around your tattoo will not improve it but worsen what you have. If you are still unhappy with it after some TIME then laser treatments and/or a well executed cover up is your best bet to getting over the moon.

seriously dude. not trying to jump on the bandwagon, but it's like you're being willfully ignorant. we're giving you the advice you asked for, still not good enough. Just chill.

If I were you, the first thing I'd do is show a little gratitude for the wealth of good and free advice you've just received from some very experienced and knowledgeable people -- including at least one world-class tattooer. See if she can fix it for free. Forget about it and get more tattoos from one of the many excellent artists in your area. Failing that, laser it, cover it with an awesome panther, chop off your arm for all I care, but honestly, why would we give a shit about what tattoo you end up with?

If everyone here, including several well-rounded tattooers, are giving you the same advice worded slightly differently each time I would have say that the answers are not going to get much different.
Telling people that they are wasting their time and effort trying to give you sound advice in a thread asking for advice just because it's not what you want to hear is kind of a dick move.
All in all, the BEST advice here is to go into a shop whether it's this artist or a different one, and go with them. We have given you some ideas and advice and that was the point of your thread. Take it from here and seek out a consultation in person with an artist.

Also worrying about money, as opposed to what is going to be on your skin for life, seems like a very bad idea. I realize $650 is a lot to lose but he could end up losing a lot more, fixing an even bigger problem... but I guess that isn't helpful advice.

It sounds like the young fellow just didn't like the answers he was hearing, which is a bit of a difference. I think we did good.

It's not unusual for a professional to charge for advice and opinions. Especially if that advice can save you money or make your life more pleasant in the long run. Quotes for various jobs are often free when they lead to more, higher paying work. Many professions are purely advice based too.
Leave it alone. An extra-thick black arm to the star does not make it look better. If you're planning on getting more tattoos near it, if they are of a high quality, eventually you won't notice the wonky star.
