Moles & Large Freckles

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about the possibility of having a few moles/freckles on my back removed in preparation for a backpiece. Thinking now is the time to do it because the scar would have almost 2 years to heal before the first session.

Question for everyone: Has anyone had moles/freckles/beauty spots removed before getting a tattoo in that area?

Question for artists: Would you rather tattoo around a mole/freckle or tattoo over the scar after it is removed?

I've got a raised mole on my back that I'm planning on having removed before I start my back piece next year. I'll be interested in responses on this, too.

I had a larger dysplastic nevi (irregular shaped, flat mole) removed (basically carved out) years ago and - in fall I will be getting a tattoo where the scar is. The mole area has "repigmented", the scar is a depression and since I have to watch it for melanoma, the tattoo has to go around the scar anyway. On small mole/ freckle removal, you would have to look closely to see any scaring after two years.

    • Who knows! It hurt a lot though, so I'm not sure if I want to do it again. This piece took me about 6 hours of tattooing plus one hour consult/aftercare. I'm super happy with it! (I hope pictures are okay in this thread, though it looks more crisp IRL)
    • You have more of a chance of F***ing it up than making it better if you start monkeying around with it. Go see a really good artist to get some ideas of what to add around it. There's nothing wrong with that tattoo.
    • I'm healing a back of calf, about half in the ditch right now myself. Thin, tender skin. I don't see anything that looks like an infection.
