  1. I prefer drawn or penned on. It seems to make the tat gun work better.

I'm not a tattooer, but drawn on makes the most sense to me, especially since I've seen a few tattoos that were actually done freehand, no stencils or drawings.

  2. Stop fussing, it really is fine. Like someone said before, it can take up to 3 months for your skin to look and feel 'normal' after a tattoo. This especially applies to tattoos on the lower legs, because they often take longer to heal than other parts of the body.

Trust us, that wrinkly shiny look is a normal part of the healing process, and will go away eventually.

  3. Welcome, you should post pictures of your tattoos.

No need to start a new thread seeking advice - check out this thread, this topic has been discussed pretty in depth so maybe you will find good advice in there, or just feel free to post in that thread. Reviving old threads rather than starting new ones, especially for broad advice topics like yours, is preferred around here.

Where in Texas are you located? Lots of great tattooers in that state.

  4. I've never been to this one so someone else should probably weigh in, but from what I gather it seems like a pretty good convention. It's run by an actual tattooer (Jet from Love Hate in Rochester) and in years past plenty of stand-out artists were there. The website still has last year's line-up posted, but I imagine a lot of those artists will return.

It's definitely not as high profile as the SFO convention or some of the big European conventions, but there are still plenty of great artists. I will most likely be there this year, hopefully with at least one appointment.

  5. Listen lady,

if you want this tattoo so bad, why NOT do all the research and sorting yourself? Isn't that more satisfying than relying on somebody else, especially for such an important, permanent decision? Why ask a bunch of strangers on the internet for help? You obviously live in an area with plenty of good artists, so go find the one you like best and get a good tattoo.

Also in general nobody on here gives a fuck about the meaning of your tattoo, whether it's super personal or superficial, because the bottom line is whether it looks good.

  6. Just give the shop a call. If you can't talk directly to Chris you can at least talk to the shop guy or another tattooer and explain that you're up in Fort Drum and can't just stop by for a quick consult, maybe give them an idea of what you want to get, might be able to get Chris's email that way too.

  7. If you have the ability to get tattooed before you head back west, you should think about making a trip down to Syracuse. I used to get tattooed and hang out at Halo Tattoo (the Marshall St location) and I'd see guys down from Fort Drum all the time.

Chris Chisholm there does fantastic black and grey realism, so he's worth looking into. Not much of an internet presence but I have watched him work quite often and he nails everything he does.

  8. Black and grey with just one color isn't too uncommon, depending on which style of black and grey... and especially if red is that one color.

I think you're in a pretty good location to find a great artist, you just need to be more specific in the style you're looking for. A good artist will be able to make a rose look harsher and thornier if you want, even if you don't see one like that in their portfolio...

Can you describe better the style you're looking for? Thick outlines, thin outlines, no outlines? Heavy black shading or soft subtle gradients? Heavily stylized or more realistic?
