  1. Has anyone tried OAK arrogant bastard? I'm intrigued, but it's 16 bucks for a 6 pack...which is enough for a 30...which is a lot...

Oak Arrogant Bastard £22.64 over here ($35.87).

  2. My first tattoo was done when I was 15. A tattooer called Steve, as far as I can remember, in Bath.

My first visit to the shop was with a couple of pals. I went first, I think we all decided on a swallow on the forearm. Anyway I had a bit of a rash on my forearm. The tattooer asked me about the rash. I said it was probably a sun rash. He said ok come back when it's gone. So my first visit ended in bitter disappointment. The next in the chair was my mate Pete. He always fancied himself as a bit of a tough guy, but he was looking very nervous. So the tattooer started the tattoo. He did the outline on this tiny tattoo and was about to start on the colour when my mate said " you don't have to colour it in do you". The tattooer, looking rather puzzled said "no not if you don’t want me to". We really took the piss out him on the train on the way home. What a pussy.

I went back a few weeks later with two pals and we all had the same deaths head tattoo on our forearm. Ones now dead the other had his covered. So mines the only one left. That was 41 years ago and I still love that tattoo. So much so that I booked Alex Binnie to recreate the tattoo on my upper leg on April 13th.

  3. There is such a thing as a Light handed tattooer? I always thought it was a myth, like Bigfoot or the abimondible snow man.

Actually there was one guy who tattooed me with quite a light hand, but it took him 6 hours to do a 2 hour tattoo (of course he charged by the hour), so by the end I think it hurt just as bad as any other tattoo session.

Some of my tattoo, consists of dotwork. So I think that’s generally a bit easier. The rest of the tattoo was really easy. I did comment how gentle he was. He said it wasn't a conscious thing on his part, its just the way he tattoos.

6 hours to do a 2 hour tattoo charged by the hour? Now that is painful.

  4. While heavy handness sucks I still would go to the artist that will put out the quality and style that I want. But if all else was equal yea lighter

I agree. It would never influence my choice of artist.

If the tattooer happens to be a bit heavy handed you just have to put up with it.

  5. There have been a few posts on this forum discussing the subject of pain when getting tattooed. Most painful spot to get tattooed, least painful etc. Which tattooer is the most heavy handed.

So who do you consider the most light handed tattooer?

For me it has to be Daniel Albrigo. He tattooed a Cosmic Skull on my midriff, last year.

I could almost describe it as pain free.

So who would you consider the gentlest tattooer to have tattooed you?

  6. Shopping on price is a massive mistake IMHO.

Tattooing is like anything else you buy and quality comes at a price.

My advice for what its worth. Look at the gallery, there's some great tattoos on there. Find an idea or design you like. Find a good artist. Im sure there are some great tattoo shops in San Diego (I'm from the UK so I can't recomend any). Get a quote pay a deposit and set a date. If you need to save some money set a date months away and start saving.

  7. I could try that.

The shipping costs make it a bit prohibitive as well. To ship a bottle of Scotch to the USA would cost £20.66 ($32.37)

Buy Whisky Online | Single Malt Whisky & More - Master of Malt ship to the USA @£19.95 a bottle or 2 bottles for £24.95, which is actually pretty damn good. Quick delivery as well, takes about 5 days to deliver to the States. I suppose if you are after something a bit special it would definately be worth it.

  8. There's a $1700 dollar bottle of Arbeg in the off-licence downstairs from our appartment. It comes in a special 'gun case', a log-book for noting measures and dates (to keep track of your ridiculously expensive whisky, I guess) with a pair of silver drinking cups....

    If I won the lottery....

Thats ok if you like the cheap stuff, I suppose.

How about some Dalmore Candela 50 Year Old, from Harrods at £12500.00. I bet that would be lovely with Pepsi.

  9. Maker's Mark : A good 'go to' bourbon ... Boring, but sadly my favourite at the moment.

Woodford Reserve : Doesn't do it for me, actually a little TOO refined.

    Buffalo Trace : Viscious, satisfying.

Four Roses : Grand, but I was a bit underwhelmed the one time I tried it. Must revisit it.

Haven't gotten around to Bulleit in many years so that's possibly next on my list. I've seen the Elijah Craig too - looks interesting.

It's Tennesse sour mash, AFAIK, as opposed to bourbon, but some of Jack Daniels' more expensive offerings are pretty good - I think the Silver select? Jim Murray picks out the good ones in his guides.

This sounds disgusting, but I want to try out some of the cheap Bourbon from Lidl and Aldi. Some of their whiskeys they stock here are actually brewed by really good Irish distillers like Cooley. They're cheap but they're not nasty. I gather that in the US there are regulations governing the distilling of bourbon now which are supposed to mean that even the 'bad' bourbons out there aren't supposed to be that bad, in terms of the distilling process, time spent etc.

I bought some Makers Mark to make Old Fashioneds' with last year.

I get what you are saying about Woodford. Four Roses has the same sort of refinement. (Well to my uneducated pallette anyway)

It certainly would be interesting to try some of the less expensive Aldi-Lidl ones, just to compare. Might pop out there later.

  10. I like Bulleit Bourbon. It is not that expensive, but still very good quality. Also Booker's Bourbon. It is 126 proof, and feels like fire, but it is still very enjoyable.

I haven't tried Bulleit. That Bookers looks good, made by Jim Beam, apparently. Not cheap. Works out around £75 + shipping ($117)

  11. I'm really getting into American Whiskey of late.

At the moment I've got, at home.

Jefferson's Reserve (not much left of this one)

Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon 12 Year Old

    Four Roses Small Batch

    A couple of my favourites

    Woodford Reserve

    Blanton's Special Reserve

    What are your favourites?

Any recommendations from my trans-Atlantic cousins will be much appreciated.
