It has come to the point where there are several areas where I need to get filler space tattooed for various locations on my body so though it would be fun to start a thread around creative filler tattoos. Though don't know if creative is the word as I'm sure several if not hundreds at some point have gotten and/or tattooed the design idea(s) at some point in tattooing history or present. Some open spaces are bigger than others so small objects can be tattooed but also want to do more than just the "normal" filler. Normal being stars and dots, waves, windbars, and what else? I woke up yesterday and decided I wanted to get tattooed so went to Blackheart and had Cody Miller tattoo some of the blank areas on one of my arms. For awhile now I've flipped through the magazine Craphound and some other clip art magazines, books, etc gathering ideas so told Cody a few then let him have at it with what he felt fit as well as what he wanted to do. I ended up getting a hourglass, cross, arrow, heart, eye, stars, dots, and he finished a tattoo he started some months back. So what do you have tattooed and/or want for filler tattoos? Is there a place you gather your ideas from? For tattooers, what's the most creative ideas you've tattooed for filler? Above I mentioned the magazine Craphound and thought I'd put some links up for those interested in these badass magazines. Each issue is a different theme of tons and tons of clip art that is hilarious and a hurricane of awesomeness. They tend to be pricey and hard to find but worth the purchase. The cheaper ones are second prints. So here's some I've found on Amazon for sale for those interested: Crap Hound Zine #4 Clowns, Devils, & Bait Crap Hound Zine #5 Hands, Hearts, & Eyes Crap Hound Zine #6 Death, Telephones, & Scissors Crap Hound Zine #7 Church & State Part One

Curious if anyone else in here collects old acetate stencils? I would really like to have a peek at other peoples collections. For some reason I almost enjoy collecting stencils more than flash. I just like holding an old acetate in my hand and imagining how many people got tattoos from it. Here are some of my collection. I have a bunch more I need to take pictures of. Bob Shaw Owen Jensen

So I have a couple questions for the folks that are completely covered. Were you happy to be totally tattooed and have a completed suit or a little bummed out cause you couldn't get any more tattoos? I've seen quite a few people just start slappin new ones on top of old ones for a 2nd coat...thoughts?

I suspect that there is no 'correct' answer to the question I'm going to pose, but here goes... Recently while browsing Thomas Hooper's blog I was blown away by his geometric black work. As it stands all of the coverage I have is either traditional japanese colour or traditional. I'm not sure that I could insert a large-scale black work piece, along the lines of something by Hooper like a Mandala, without achieving a sort of 'jarring' effect. Is it important to you that you collect work which has an overall cohesion, visually and thematically, or do you please yourself and not worry about this so much. Would you (or do you) see a problem with having a black work back piece, japanese sleeves and traditional leg pieces ... Or is that variety part of the spice of life?

I got two pictures sent to me recently that looked like they were straight from 850 Bryant (SF's County Jail) processing area but the person who sent them to me had no idea on any of the history. I couldn't decided where on the tattoo forum I was going to put them as the "Photography of People with Tattoos" was good but didn't seem right. Then the next closes thread was the "Russian Criminal Tattoos" thread but that wasn't a fit as they were clearly American and one was for sure Bay Area specific. I was thinking how cool it would be to see a tattoo picture book of American Prison and County Tattoos. So I've done a l little research and believe I located where they came from, Robert Gumpert, though could be wrong as the two I got weren't on his site but match his style. So while in the process I gathered some more prisoner tattoo pictures and thought it would be cool to have a thread of tattoo pictures of American prisoners in county and/or jail. It would great to get ahold of all the pictures they take of people and their tattoos when processing new inmates to the county/state bed and breakfast. Here's is an article I found on Juxtapoz about one of Robert Gumbert's recent projects: Please share your photos and also if you know of any books. Here is a book I found that looks good: Prison Tattoos

Im thinking of putting Pansies (my mums favorite flowers) in part of a tattoo, and i found plenty of good reference photos and whatnot, but i cant see it making a good tattoo? Just wondering on your opinions of whether or not a Pansy would tattoo well? Mum likes the ones just like the one im attaching a photo of. And also i was just wondering on what people thought about using flowers other than the most common, ie. roses and cherry blossoms and such.

I love praying hands! I have a traditional pair from Scott Sylvia on my forearm with a banner that says "Thank You" to remind me to be grateful for all that I have. I love what people come up with to make them a little different, unique, or more personal. Here's an example that my hubby just did on a kid who is a Harley mechanic. *Please forgive the bad cell phone pic. It's all I had.

Eagles to me are like Rock of Ages, classic/timeless tattoos! The mental association with the word "tattoo" within the top five images that will pop into my head are eagles. Something about them always catches my eye in tattooers portfolios and flash at tattoo shops. I'm often drawn to the older flash at shops and will look for long periods of time at each eagle. I love seeing old tattoo pictures as well with people who have large eagle chestpieces (I couldn't find any online so pls share if you have some). I have seen some amazing ones pop up on this tattoo forum as well and hope the users will post theirs here that they have collected, tattooed, and drawn. I have quickly gathered some eagle pictures from tattooers who I think do great eagles: Lindsey Carmichael, Nick Colella, Thomas Hooper, Chad Koeplinger, Stefan Johnsson, and Tim Lehi. Share your favorite eagle tattoos and tattooers who do the eagles you like.....have at it!

What do you have tattooed on your elbow? It seems like for many years the most popular tattoo designs for elbows I've seen were stars, spiderwebs, and roulette wheels though lately I've been seeing some new tattoo ideas. Curious if the previous "three" were mainly popular due to odd placement, lack of originality or another reason? I've heard the spiderweb stories/meanings but know this is for a smaller percentage of those wearing them. Would love to see some pictures of what various people have on here for elbow tattoos and also tattooers what they have tattooed. Tattooers, what was the best elbow tattoo you ever tattooed or got? For me it is part of a Dia De Los Muertos themed cobra half sleeve by Scott Sylvia done back at Temple.

I have seen a plethora of owl tattoos recently. Often they are holding a key, and a key hole is incorporated in the owls body. I've searched and searched but I can't find the reason behind it. Does anyone know the reason for this(if there is one)?

Lets see some. I don't know if there is already a thread strictly for awesome/funny/realistic/old school skulls but if there is i couldn't find it so i decided to start this thread! bring em onnnnnnnn

I was trying to come up with a good design for a flintlock pistol with roses tattoo, but cant decide between these three? Obviously the designs for the actual pistol and roses would be much better, I just grabbed some quick ones off the internet to put these together. So my question is, which of these three do you like better? It would either be on my chest or back, but probably chest i think. I personally like the third the best i think, because it would follow the line of my collarbone nicely i think, and with four roses its almost too busy...

Over the past few months we've had some awesome conversations in the various tattoo forum threads on Japanese tattoo designs/tattooers, Japanese tattoo politics, and much much more around Japanese culture both historical and present day. Plus seen some great tattoo pictures from smaller tattoos to larger Japanese inspired body suits. Through all of this I noticed a thread solely dedicated to Japanese Tattoos was never started so the time has come.... For me I have been watching Stewart Robson's work on his blog as well as some of his work that has been posted on this site for some time now. I love the fact that he does works in progress pictures so as a fan of tattoos you can watch the process unfold on larger japanese tattoos. What stands out to me right now other than the attention to details and dedication by both tattooers and tattoo collectors to invest so much time into the piece but also the limited colors. The use of so much black with only a few colors if any really make a Japanese inspired tattoo standout to me. For one of the pictures below by Stewart I mentioned this I think in the Full Back Piece Thread is the carp on the upper right leg....so sick! From the tail to the face, the shading and colors matching how you'd potentially see one in a koi pond. I have more tattooers whose Japanese tattoos I follow regularly but will start there. Look forward to hearing everyone else's stories/opinions and seeing your pictures. Stewart Robson Blog (The photos I grabbed are recent ones but often times scroll all the way through all the pages and am never disappointed as it is time well spent!)

OK. Due to the Jonathan Shaw topic (here) I thought I will get some conversation going on about blackwork. I will just call everything that has spawned from Tribal style work blackwork. My favorites are Jun Matsui (3 pic), Thomas Hopeer (4 pic) and the likes. Too many to name. Marisa Kakoulas has a great info piece in the article relating to her book Black Tattoo Art: Modern Expressions of the Tribal. I will quote it here. Needles and Sins Tattoo Blog | Black Tattoo Art Book Release I really love the part where mister Raven said And I think that is what really draws me to this style aswell. How a great black work backpiece for example makes the human seem like something else. A myth perhaps. Some type of otherworldly hero. And it doesn't just have to link the wearer to something old. Like for example the Leo Zulueta backpiece (1 pic, Rory is the one in the right) on Rory Keating conveys a feeling similar to Queequeg from Moby Dick (Queequeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) when for example the one by Volker (2 pic) is a futuristic anti goverment operative who bears the mark of the resistance. It's his armor of choise. But both have a strong romantic feel to them. The chosen ones. It fits (when done right) the wearer perfectly. Perhaps better than any other style of tattooing. Do you agree or disagree? edit. The title should be Blackwork, not black work

I was just curious as to how much time other tattooers spend drawing for tattoos outside the shop. On average for me, I can spend an hour or two doing research and/ or looking at reference before I actually start drawing. And an additional 2 to 4 hours ( depending on subject matter ) on drawing something about the size of a foot ball or say half sleeve. Part 2 of this thread: I was also curious about how much time tattooers spend painting or creating additional art not directly for a tattoo, IE: prints, flash, tshirt designs, etc. And how important is that aspect of being a tattooer? Thanks everyone - Dan Martin

With only two months into the year I thought it would be fun to try to do some projections as to what possibly will be this years most popular tattoos after reading Tammy's blog "Tattoo Trends of 2010". Here are my top three 2011 Tattoo Idea guesstamations: 1) Sharks 2) Traditional Tattoo Designs with a nautical/sailor/traveler theme 3) Tattoos of hands in various manners/styles (shaking hands, praying hands, one hand holding a rose, hands doing sign language and gang signs, etc) What are your top three projections?

since there has been a lot of discussion about them over at the Most Painful thread, i thought it might be time to set aside a thread devoted to palm tattooing alone. i saw a set that Lizzie did and i thought it was extremely beautiful and elegant despite being so simple (and physically, understandably so!) i would be lying if i said i wasn't jealous and didn't wish that it was on me rather than the person in the picture (and i have never wanted hand tattoos before seeing this!) anyone else seen any that they really love?

That sound takes me back; I'd forgotten about the metallic timbre of the tchk-tchk-tchk. That poor woman is earning one beautiful back piece.

Seeing those awesome Bert Grimm pictures in recent posts reminds me of this traditional design which is originally credited to an unknown artist ca.1900. The combatants are said to be locked in "mortal combat " How do u like yours done?Do you favour the more chinese ,crazy looking traditional dragon a la Jerry Collins.Or are you partial to a more Japanese version ? Even the animals are subject to change -who do you like to see in the mix ?

Who else here has it tattooed on them and why?

For several years now I've been fine-tuning an idea for a shoulder/quarter sleeve piece, but I just can't afford it right now and I don't think something that big is great for a first tattoo. So I came up with a much simpler design. I'm thinking I'll put it on my left forearm: As my best friend was quick to point out everyone's going to think I'm a huge Motörhead fan, and though the ace of spades is inspired by a different song, there are worse ways to misinterpret a tattoo, right? I'm not sure where I'll go to get it done yet, though.

I was just reading Sboyer's response in the thread What tattoo designs can you never see enough of? and realized we have no Rock of Ages thread so here we go... I remember when I fell in love with this tattoo design while working at Juxtapoz and we had just printed the Jason Mcafee Rock of Ages poster and just being amazed. For some reason that poster really sticks out in my mind. I tried to locate a picture of it for here but can't find it so if you have one please post. While trying to find the image I did locate this video of Freddy Corbin at Temple Tattoo doing a Rock of Ages. It says it was done four years ago but guessing it has to be older as Scott Sylvia is shown in the background tattooing there as well??? It was posted by a user named xhooliganx and I know we have a user on our tattoo forum by that name as well so if it is the same, thanks. Since the video is labeled part one is there a second one that shows the tattoo or do you have a picutres? Part One Here are some other threads with Rock of Ages talk and/or pictures: Was tattooing as popular 100 years ago as now? What's your favorite tattoo on your body? Full Back Tattoo Designs Religious and Spiritual Tattoo Designs Fastest Tattooers New Tattoo Idea, Rock of Ages Lets hear and see them......

This has become an interesting topic to me recently as i was involved in a situation where this was a bit of a controversy. (I recently had to get a piece redone) I have heard some shops do not redo other artists pieces ever, i know some artists that wont touch other certain artists pieces to not cause conflict of interest. What is your take as an artist on redoing/reworking/completely covering up other artists work? I feel like if the original artist didnt do it right the first time then they have no right to be upset if the client looks elsewhere for a better go.
