  1. wow i didn't expect this type of response, so here goes at trying to respond to everyone: thanks Lochlan and Scott! i won't be traveling extensively (i will be going to Monterey for my birthday in November, but i go there at least once a year to soak in the waves and the otters) again until next year, unless i start a new photo project. i'm trying to save to take my mom to Europe, but she doesn't know that yet. Nick and Mario, i seriously had a blast! you're shop was very welcoming and friendly and i appreciated all the hospitality. hopefully we can return the favor in the Bay next week/weekend. i can see why both of you love it there, and i would be lying if i said i didn't miss it already. Dean and Julio, it might be the second best trip of my entire life, the first being the time i spent in Ireland. Chicago might be a meaty city, but it's also a top vegan destination and there are a lot of amazing vegan companies from the chicago area (such as Upton's Seitan and Chicago Soy Dairy). as far as masculinity is concerned, i could see why you would think that, but that doesn't bother me. i've always been a tom boy, though ironically i came home from Chicago with a new dress haha. what can i say, i'm sucker for them sometimes!
  2. awww Scott. i'm going to print this out and keep it in my wallet. seriously, these are words to live by.

    art art art

this site makes me want to get back into making art hardcore. i need a push to stop being lazy (and to clean/finish unpacking/organize my room) and to start actually making a game plan to do things again, so i'm hoping this blog post will do that. i have a few ideas already in the works, and i'm going to lay them all out here so i do not forget (and maybe someone will push me forward): - (work in progress) a series of portraits of people who have inspired me (family, artists, theorists, historians, etc.) - a series of paintings based on song lyrics - a series of photographic portraits of tattooed Native Americans here in California - possibly a photographic portrait series of tattoo artists (this may be cliche and overdone so i'll need to research this beforehand) - photographing the former sites of tattoo history here in California (Northern California to start)

    flash

i love the cloud eye! are you coming to CA anytime soon? let me know if you do.
  5. "I began my business because I was watching my older teenage children start to put tattoos on," she says, "and I started to wonder how are they going to get a real job some day, with ink showing from their elbows down." do people really still believe this?? maybe it's just because i live in a bubble here in California...

    BEARDS!

i really want a tattoo of annie jones. man, sometimes i have serious beard envy :(
  7. - saving a bird who hit a window - getting hugged by a schizophrenic, homeless dude - getting tattooed twice in one day (thanks Mario and Nick!) - having the best vegan ruben (earwax was awesome!) - seeing articles of faith and less than jake twice, both in a club that only held 150 people - eating a snack two seats away from keith morris at skewerz - seeing john josephs just chillin’ against a benz - watching a two year old demand to get tattooed - meeting El Brad who is my dead uncle’s doppleganger circa 1965 - experiencing a ton of amazing art - meeting old schoolers of hardcore from chicago/memphis and hanging out with them almost everynight - getting punched in the face by a racist asshole during Zero Boys (i’m ok, it was a bad shot) - talking to Daryl from snapcase after their set and confirming that they are not doing a reunion tour (bummer) - going to multiple shows every night and just not giving a fuck. it was an awesome trip. a huge thanks to Nick and Mario, and the rest of Chicago Tattoo Co. for letting me chill and doing great work. i sincerely felt welcomed and i'm happy i'll be seeing you guys in SF next weekend.
  8. i've never seen that line tattooed, or an image representing it, but its a great one! i don't know if this was just to gougetheeyes or to both of us, so i feel pretentious answering it, but here goes. i got to see them on both reunion tours (last year and this year), and i almost got in fights at both because other people were being assholes. oh well, they were still awesome shows.
  9. hi Valerie! it's probably nice to know you're coming to a place that already has a fan club for you! (with me included!) welcome aboard!
  10. i want an MCD tattoo for the lines "and i'm subtle, subtle like a t-rex". they were such a great band.
  11. one of my tattoos was a design that was ripped off from another artist (none of the artists on here and i'm not about to name names), unbeknownst to me. the original artist contacted me, as well as the artist who did it on me, both sharing their side of the stories. i've gone back and have been tattooed by this same person since, as i figured they were young, inexperienced, and the other designs that have been done have been really basic or really customized (as in i've brought in materials for the design to be based off of). i figured it was a stupid beginners mistake that wouldn't happen again. however, i've learned that it basically has happened again, though not on me. you can see the differences in both designs, however, they're pretty damn similar to each other, and the original artist has called my artist out on it. while i'm quite close to the person who has been doing this, at the same time, as a client, it makes me question the work being done. i know this artist has a lot of potential talent, is extremely creative, and has had to fight for their career. however, it makes me feel uneasy, and it puts me in a hard spot, somewhere between professionion and friendship. then again, since i am not the client who had this second piece done, perhaps there is more to the storie, and possibly, this client asked for this specific tattoo (though both artists are here in the bay area so i don't understand why you wouldn't just go to the original one). i just feel like i'm in a weird place. or i could just go to Scott/blackheart more often...
  12. i think we tend to not trust our own bodies/systems, but after the first week of healing, i pretty much let mine do it's thing. always turns out just fine.
  13. Bunny, those are awesome! I've also contemplated the behind the ear tattoo, though like Bunny, my fear of it clashing with whatever I end up putting on my neck later down the line has kept me from moving forward with it. Personally, I'm not a fan of lower back tattoos, since they always seem like a waste of good real estate (that is if you're contemplating a full back piece I suppose), but I see Mario's point. Could you charge more for doing ribs? It seems like doing any sort of tattoo on a difficult area would be cause enough to up the price a bit.
  14. i love the city flash! you did a great job Nick!
  15. kind of bummed that i'll be missing this. ATS seems like it's in bad shape financially :(

    song lyric tattoos

Nick is tattooing "run rabbit run" next week!
  17. Oh and Shane, thank you for posting this! if you've (or anyone else for that matter) come upon anything (or have knowledge of) tattooing here in California during the turn of the 20th century, i'd love to compare notes or discuss it further. i've just been swamped this week with homework, work, and gearing up for my trip so i haven't had a chance to type anything up for you guys (and what i prepared for the proposal was a brief overall history, not an in-depth one) on the tribal practices i've found.
  18. i agree with you completely Dean, but i feel like there may be 2 other reasons why the patchwork look is popular again today (according to the researcher I've done, it originally gained popularity during/post WWII): 1) there are many different artists out there, all with various talents and signature styles, and therefore it's hard for people (like myself) to commit to one artist or just one style, and therefore it's desirable to have work done by artists who fall within a given category (such as traditional), but without having to commit to one artist, or to loose out on having work done by another. 2) what is old is new again (and as Shane points out) and it's trendy. this may make it more viable for new artists who are popping up in the community, by providing a service that is in high demand. this could also be a good argument for promoting the older style "suits" just my 2 cents.
