  1. my first tattoo was done by Chris Conn in early 2005. i was 19, had been on his waiting list for a few months, and knew what elements i wanted. i basically went in and told him that i wanted a chest piece and that it needed to incorporate anchors, irises, and a sacred heart. i came back in a week (maybe two, i can't remember exactly) and he had drawn out the design perfectly. he asked me if i was sure that i wanted it on my chest, and i assured him i'd be ok and that i wanted it on my chest because it was a tattoo about my parents, yada yada yada. anyways, the flames ended up being too high, and we both joked how we didn't think it would be a good idea for me to have a neck tattoo as my first one, so we modified them by parting them down the center so they now go out to the sides right below the center of my collar bone, and i still love that idea/decision. took 3 sessions, 2 4 hour, one 2 hour, and it's still, sincerely, one of the least painful tattoo experiences i've had to this day. i wish i had gotten more work done, but by the time i could afford another piece (i was in college at the time), i had gone to Ireland for study abroad and came back to find out that Chris had retired. the only way i could afford that tattoo was by saving change for 3 years, plus tips from working at a peet's, an ice cream shop, and the money i received from xmas/birthdays.
  2. I LOVE THIS! coincidentally, i also have a set of decapitated "edge" hands, but they weren't done in a sketch garage and they're not relevant to this forum. the bloody tampon with wings is awesome.
  3. i just break out in a rash (the red itchy kind with little bumps) and it caused my tattoo to swell more than average. i've got sensitive skin, and lotions, ointments, make-up, deodorant, even metal containing nickel (or at least i believe this is the cause) can break me out into a rash. so far i've been lucky pigment/inks in my tattoos, but i just stay away from Aquaphor as i honestly believe it has something to do with a reaction from when i sweat, and i noticed when using Aquaphor, it held in a lot of moisture. what can i say, i'm just a freak of nature when it comes to my skin (actually i blame it on genetics). i also have keratosis polaris, aka permanent goosebumps, on my arms and upper legs which is annoying.

    BEARDS!

i keep trying to convince Jackson to curl his stache, but so far no luck. i even bought him wax :( i think i've also developed a technique for doing it perfectly, though it's only in theory since i myself do not possess facial hair of that matter. does anyone own a brush/comb set for their facial hair? i'm thinking of x(xx)mas gift shopping and i would love to find a really good set since i Jackson does comb his beard everyday.

    song lyric tattoos

that's a good one! i want a tattoo for June Carter Cash's "the Storms are on the Ocean" but that song is so perfect, it's hard to pinpoint a single line from it.
  6. Burt's Bees ResQ Ointment works wonders in my opinion (Chris Conn recommended it to me originally). i've had bad reactions to Aquaphor so i always avoid it now, but never with the ResQ ointment. it's obviously not vegan though, so once my supply runs out, i'm back to square one :(
  7. can it be a beard fan forum? jackson (the one you see me smoochin') has a sweet ginger beard that i love, despite friends and family giving him crap about it.

    Chicago!

will do Tammy once all the details are figured out. thought i might drop by late on wednesday, after getting to my hostel and checking in, but that will depend on if Nick and/or Mario are there. Mario and Nick: any chance you'd both be free to do some work? i mean if i'm coming by the shop anyways... i've got some ideas floating around in my head and i'd love to talk shop. i think i can scrape up the money.
  10. i completely understand! blab away friend, blab away! it's enjoyable i think to read a fully explained opinion vs just a one line response that doesn't have much thought (or heart for that matter) put into it.
  11. there's many on this list that i also hope to get work by. you have an amazing red beard. there should be a group for ginger bearded men, like a secret society. sorry, i'm going off topic now haha!

    song lyric tattoos

i've been a song lyric fanatic for years. if a song has good lyrics, but the music's just meh, i'll still love it for the lyrics. here's a list of what i hope to get done so far: - "times are hard it's true. i'll cope" - GB of course - "be open hearted!"- GB - "we all know, that soul is hard to find" - Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - "hearing that noise was my first ever feeling" - the Clash - "i'm not down!"- the Clash - "as in heaven, as in hell" - the Clash - "just look to the clouds, and you shall see. always changing. forever moving on."-Bane - "wave the ocean, wave the sea"- Lucero - "my tears don't matter much"- Lucero -"that much further west"- Lucero - "keep me searching" - niel young - "you were only waiting for this moment to arise" -the Beattles - "our band could be your life" - the Minutemen (seriously tearing up thinking about this song haha) - "rise above" Black Flag (of course), this i want across the top of my shoulders. - "the sound of revolution" or "the sound of revolution now is in your heart"- Warzone (can't decide, but love that song!) - "at the moment there's nothing, so there's nothing to lose" - the Jam - "just like the river, i've been running eversince"- Jimmy Cliff - "wish you were here" - Pink Floyd - "roll me over and let me go. running free with the buffalo" -Thin Lizzy - "words. you're married to your pain." -Sunny Day Real Estate - "how it feels, to be something on " - Sunny Day Real Estate i'm going to stop for now but i'm sure there will be a part two. i always forget them, then hear the song, then remember them. i want to work on a series of paintings based on various lyrics (some that i would not get tattooed on me personally, but i feel that they could be tattoos). we'll see when this happens.
  13. i have one band inspired tattoo but now that Dan's on here i'm not going to post about it haha. however, i do want a solid sleeve (i'm thinking leg since i'm pretty short and my arms have limited space) of song lyric inspired tattoos. i'll do a blog post about it so no one has to deal with my cheesiness. and no one can beat Dan's "out of step" tattoo. i wish he had posted it.
  14. i also want a blackbird inspired tattoo! only i want the words "you were only waiting for this moment to arise" such a good song.

    Chicago!

thanks Mario and Nick! i had read about Reckless records but hearing a recommendation for them is even better. i'm a bargain hunter when it comes to music now (most of my collection consists of items i bought for under $5) and so far, i've been pretty lucky when traveling. my trip to the northwest in may/june proved very fruitful on that front. Nick, i'll definitely stop by! i'm getting more and more stoked by the minute.
  16. where would you say the line is drawn between an influence and purely ripping off another person's work? again, just out of curiosity. sorry if this is a lame topic/subject.
  17. i really want to go but i'll be volunteering at work for part of Saturday. i know i'm going to sound like a total square/dope when i say this, but is everyone trying to meet up at a certain time or place, or just making the rounds to say hi?

    Howdy

fair enough. then can you create a blot post why Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros were one of the most underated bands to have ever existed? that would be a great compromise :)
  19. thanks Mario. this was exactly the type of response i was hoping for. i think this thread will be fine as long as everyone stays civil about it (and i do realize that it's a heated topic).
