I'm downloading Until The Light Takes Us at the moment...

i just watched that recently, really good. not what most people would expect for a documentary on black metal but i think it's excellent.

speaking of scratchers and slang, i had a guy come in a few weeks back that said he does tattoo parties and rambled on for awhile rattling off all kinds of terrible slang and then as he was leaving he told me his name and i quote "oh so tatted". it literally took me a few minutes after he left to figure out that was what he had said because my brain kept trying to make it into some type of real name.

late 80's/early 90's is the first time i remember people talking about "getting sleeved" or starting to get a cohesive type of design for the entire arm. from what i remember of other friends getting work there seemed to be a new school or bio influence which was becoming popular around that time. i think grafitti played a major influence on the new school style and may have even contributed to a more cohesive sleeve concept. that and of course the traditional japanese influence but more so in concept of background and a full sleeve type of structure. the first several tattoos i had gotten around that time were all just scattered and it wouldn't be until around 94/95 that i got a design that covered from my wrist to my elbow. up until that point even when i would encounter someone who was heavily tattooed it was still usually several smaller tattoos that filled the space. that was also around the time that i saw people trying to completely use as much space as possible with designs. like this guys neck tattoo, it was a pennywise clown head on his neck and it went from his throat to up behind his ears. i remember being totally blown away by it. i'm not sure when it may have happened on the west coast since things always seemed to spawn from there before we would ever get exposed to it in the south. of course these were the days before the internet so when it did happen somewhere else, it required a physical manifestation of it before you could be exposed to it. so if you didn't travel or know anyone who traveled, then you might only get exposed by going to punk shows where the band would hang out after the show or something like that.

arrive on time or even a few minutes early. if your appointment is the first one of the day and you arrive early before the shop has opened then whenever someone shows up, allow them to go in and turn off the alarm and turn stuff on and open up before coming inside.

as an observation to slang and/or jargon, it used to be a way of communication that allowed you to identify "like minded" individuals and had a relevance to creating something outside of the mainstream. now as mass culture becomes a giant homogenized cluster of what people think is cool and rebellious is just the newest marketing trend. everyone has t-shirts with swirly designs and crosses that are purposely mis-printed and faded to imply that its somehow unique and different. i swear i've seen dudes who are old enough to have grand kids wearing these things. too many people are trying to invent cool new phrases to try and push out beyond this influx of mass coolness. its just a matter of time before people start adding "zilla" or "shiz" to things and saying phrases like "that dude is an inkzilla" or mashing together other overused catchy sounding words. so just remember, all the cool folks are the ones that aren't trying to be anything other than themselves.

damn!! haha, well if the rumors are true of another album and such then i hope they'll tour for it.

i think kids can be a huge motivation too, i mean i know plenty of really talented artists that are lazy, unmotivated and have no children. theres a solution to any equation as long as you are willing to look for it. knowing balance and structure within ones own set of variables is something that is a part of anyone who is successful. most of what people perceive can be converted from a negative to a positive

did any of ya'll west coast folks see eyehategod when they played last week? i'm hoping they'll do more shows and come closer, never got to see them play before they broke up.

Fine, so I'm a parasite. I'm not sure exactly how to formulate a response to this that expresses how I feel about it without generating a whole lot more inflammatory responses. Again, you don't know me.

i never claimed to know anything more about you than what you have expressed here and the reason its inflammatory is that you have such a limited experience and exposure to tattooing so being able to form the views you have expressed to people who have literally devoted their lives to tattooing and to make assumptions that you can do a good tattoo is what evokes the types of responses that you received. i don't doubt that you have a passion to pursue a career and devote yourself to it but i think it is just a lack of understanding of what it really means to say that you have no plans to get any more tattoos but yet you want to put them on other people. tattooing, even the "art" of it is far more involved than just drawing a picture and being able to execute it in a way that looks appealing. also understand, that i'm not one of those folks whose worried about competition or how many people are tattooing or those aspects of things.

think of this as an example, i like to eat food. i like to cook food and have a certain curiosity and interest in food and how to cook it. i can cook some really tasty and appealing dishes that i imagine lots of people might like. i do think that i could enjoy being a chef but i know that if i were to ever really want to pursue being a real chef and not a line cook at a food chain, then i'm going to have to try lots of different kinds of food and figure out the best ways to prepare them. my key to being successful would rely on my ability to have a broad pallet and know everything i could about food. i think most serious chefs or people who have a passion for food might give me hell if i stated i'm going to be a chef/i want to be a chef/i think i could be a chef.. but i'm only willing to try 2 kinds of food...and maybe if something sounds good enough sometime in the future then i'll try something new.

how will you ever truely learn how to tattoo without getting tattooed? also, until you've invested yourself completely you have absolutely no clue of what it takes to be a tattooer/"tattoo artist" let alone a really good one. i guess, i find it somewhat offensive...if you only want 2 tattoos why would you want to do tattoos? it doesnt seem that passionate to me. ugh...

i dont think that either method implies anything related to the tattooers abilities to put on a nice tattoo. they are basically "tools" and there are times where you need the right tool for the right job.

just an observation...any discussion of serious pictures and responses are also not funny nor random pics soooooo less talk, more random pictures! cheer up mutherfuckers! :)

i don't think of the "business" very much since i've always formed my opinions based on the individuals that i choose to interact with in that regard. to me it's the same as: i know that nike makes shoes and that they might be popular but i still choose to by the same style of vans that i've worn since i started skating in the 80's. i like getting to determine what i allow to participate in my daily life and i should mention that knowing that there are good folks like you (deb) and don out there setting a good example of hard working family oriented tattooers that none of the actual "business" matters to me. oh and the same goes for you to shane! that reminds me that i was supposed to put together some more music to send you. t

myke chambers travels all the time so i doubt it'll be the last opportunity for you to get tattooed by him but you really don't know how lucky you are to live close enough to get tattooed by murray.

we had a small garden and constantly had problems with the neighbor's cat, now that i'm selling this house i'm going to set something new up at the new place down south. the cart idea is great, we're going to do some window boxes as well. if ya'll don' already have them, a compost bin and rain barrel are highly beneficial.

i just got rid of a fairly large and pretty eclectic vhs collection. i have a pretty good dvd collection but i've started to buy less and i'm just focusing on music and tattoo related stuff. my music collection is pretty outrageous, i've been packing it up and it's taking forever to get it done. i used to work in record stores and i was the program director at a college radio station so i've got a diverse collection. the only other things that i've been collecting lately are teeth. i have all of my daughter's baby teeth and one of my molars that i had extracted.
