The design is ok, but the background's similarity to the bird's design might be a bit busy for no color.
100% agree that this acting as a reference for an artist who can pull off something awesome.
Hope you're up to speed with how to pick a capable artist . . .

I glanced through your Instagram and I'm guessing that when you say you're an "independent" tattoo artist what you really mean is that you're putting shitty tattoos on your dumb shithead friends in your filthy apartment with no training or hygiene. That's normally called scratching but because you're a clever art school kid you probably have a lengthy jerkoff artist's statement about how it isn't that. Nobody cares. Beat it.
Right . . but tell my how you really feel -

One of the joys of tattoos is how they move. Distortion, movement and re-proportion is part of what makes them so interesting to look at and watch.

Steve is doing Lucas' (the shop assistant - big dude) back. Ask to see it. Spectacular.

I'll just miss you @SStu I'm gonna be down there next Saturday
Definately a high traffic area. Last time I was there Ron Henry Wells was walking in the door as I was exiting . . . :/

A week from now I'll be finishing up my 5th session with Thomas at ROA. All the outline is complete, so psyched to get into some more serious shading.

Planning on getting my first tattoo hopefully before summer starts. If not I will be getting it in the fall. I think I am going to get a deer skull and antlers on my chest or back. Me and my father are huge hunters and I thought it would be cool to get my first buck tattooed on me to remember that day. I am thinking about doing something like this one. Any opinions on this?
My opinion = this one is way too small

Aye ive seen that wave many times. But it has already been tattooed and i dont want to get the exact same. Im not gone be a tattoo stealer out of respect and and it should be an unique part/tattoo.
But its looks good. Maybe a variation between the two.
Certainly not saying you'd need to copy that particular photo. Thousands of tattooists do variations on Japanese waves - and many are capable of doing an interesting full piece, if that's the way you wanted to interpret an ocean so that it's easily recognizable.

One of those doesn't have a link to any online portfolio. That's not usually a good sign . . .
I know there is someone who is pretty good in Rochester - but I can't remember the name at the moment. I know a couple of folks here will, though.
Jon Mirro does pretty good work. He frequently visits Hand of Doom in Buffalo.
