blacksandtattoo reacted to ironchef in Artists who copy tattoos/styles
A friend of mine who's got some decent tattoos told me straight out that the artist he goes to is super lazy and doesn't like to draw his own stuff out. If he had an appointment, he was told to show up early and described what he liked and the artist would search around the internet, present him with a couple of options that the artist found and then basically copy it out and tattoo it. The work is good but guess it left me kinda of puzzled as much as @Diehardonvhs

It is funny that the 3rd picture even copied those two dark spirals on the shoulders that look like the might have been existing work that Shige had to work around. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

I tried a similar method with the work I had done on Friday. Took the initial wrap off after my ~3 hour drive home, showered, air dry for 30 minutes, re-wrap with no ointments or lotions, drink a beer, and go to sleep. Wake up, shower, air dry for 30 minutes, re-wrap again, drink a beer, 8 hours later wash again, air dry for 30 minutes, re-wrap again until next morning then shower and let air dry and apply a little unscented lotion. Basically kept it wrapped up for the first 24 hours. Best healing experience of my life. Zero scabbing, just that super thin "sun burn" peel, and no worrying about sticking to sheets. Now I have significantly less tattoo healing anxiety.

everybody has their own way to do this stuff. i've been convinced by much better tattooers than i to wrap it for 3 days. first day, leave the wrap on til morning. wash, let dry, no ointment, re-wrap. leave on until morning. repeat. after the third day, the tattoo is healed on the surface and begins to peal. i found this to be a nice way to deal with my knee and crotch being tattooed, which could have been quite uncomfortable at work. the problem with this method is getting the customer to do it correctly. so i only explain it to ones who i think are smart enough to follow directions and are getting bigger work in uncomfortable spots.

I like the concept! From now until the local Relay for Life event, all proceeds we get from any cancer ribbon tattoo will get donated to ACS. It's a good cause, and community involvement helps to improve the public's perception of our industry.

i sincerely think, keeping it clean and dry is the best way, for me.
i leave the wrap till either bedtime or the morning, depending on the area tattooed or the size of the tattoo.i wash mine with fairly hot water and soap for the first few days to stop it from weeping, the first wash is the most important and i will take a while to wash it. if towards the end of healing it feels a bit dry thats when i might use a pea sized amount of unscented moisturizer.
i get too many customers believing its the cream that heals the tattoo and look at me funny when i tell them, its not the cream doing the healing, its the skin, so take care of it and dont smother cream on hoping for a miracle.

That's where I've been:
Although, once again, I'm not a tattooer. But fishing has become my latest obsession in the last six months.

Hello everyone, this is my first post here on LST, I'm a tattooer from California and have been curious to come on the LST forum and see what it had to offer. I do believe a controlled and open-minded forum is such a great tool to educated and enlighten folks to some of the nuances of the tattoo community.
As I began to read this post, I hoped, that I would find there are still tattooers with a voice contributing to this site. I find it absolutely refreshing to see that, not so far into this Post, a well respected and talented tattooer, @StewartRobson posted an articulate and well thought out reply. I look forward to 'exploring' the forum more and also contributing where I can.
Thanks!
Joe

The Pearl has a deal on this April. They are offering $100 daffodil tattoos with %100 of the cash going to cancer research. That's a special I can get behind.

I want a discount tattoo as much as I want a discount parachute. That being said, I support the charity, Friday the 13th, and other fun special things that shops do.

I put these light sabers on the biggest Star Wars fan I've ever met... Literally!
This dude was 6'9" and made the shop look tiny every time he came in!

blacksandtattoo reacted to alice in anyone got some drawing tips?
i've been an artist my whole life, but when i started tattooing i started thinking of my tracing paper sketches as disposable, and using red and blue pencils to sketch really changed the way i draw. it really does help to not stress about a drawing and to just go through a few sheets of paper as you work out certain details. i think a healthy mix of tracing for practice and using reference is really helpful. "you're only as good as your reference library" haha

My biggest pet peeve is tattooers with multiple apprentices who never apprenticed themselves.

Sex Offenders as tattoo artists. . . . . more to come on that topic in another thread later.

Wow... There's a lot of really good stuff in this thread!
I've been trying to use up some of the art supplies that I've had laying around for the last couple of years, and I ran across some full sheet labels. Everybody's been having a lot of fun making stickers to slap all over the place!
