I've amassed a lot of stuff during various bursts of enthusiasm (stereo equipment! impractical shoes!) but I think of "collector" as implying that the person has a very particular taste and is discerning.  In a way, it also implies, to me, that there's an audience for the collecting. Like a record collector is different from a person who just has a lot of records, because the former might seek out specific pressings. I've had the good fortune of getting nice tattoos thanks to this place, but I don't have anything like the knowledge or refinement to think of myself as a collector.  Mostly I want to spraypaint this old jalopy so that it looks better.

Hi all - it' seems in the move we've lost all the directly uploaded to the forum (ie not hotlinked from an image site or linked from gallery) images.
Also, I was wondering if we could bring that functionality back? There are images I don't really want in a gallery (unfinished tattoos or examples of a problem [blowout]) that I'd like to provide visual examples of without having to subscribe to photobucket etc. Thanks all!

I travelled the world for 26 years before retiring from the Army. Now I'm content to stay local and work with the artist I've found here that I like and trust. But, who knows? Maybe the Fates will tempt me at some point? At least I have fewer years left for any possible regrets!!!

instagram - to me - love it or hate it - is a game changer for evaluating what to expect from a tattooer
its not everything - but its huge
i like when artists post regular work
not everyone does this but when i can go a year or 2 deep into someones IG and i see hundreds of tattoos they did
    well that says something
if you see a consistent body of work that pleases you then you can feel confident that you will probably be pleased with the outcome of your tattoo
like i said - its not everything but its a big thing in the current processes of choosing an artist
    i personally love IG
i have mentioned to a few artists that i liken it to growing up and looking at the sports pages
    following your favorite athlete
well - i dont follow sports these days like that
but i like going onto IG with a cup of coffee
and checking out the latest pieces of awesomeness that my favorite tattooers have posted
    anyway
    good luck in your search
i also am a big fan of the LST interview section
fun stuff and you'll get some good perspective on the world of tattooing

I've had a bunch of people want to touch mine, as well. But, the reason is that they don't believe it is real. Despite posting pics on my FB page during the process of having mine done, people still think it was an April fools joke and it was just temporary. They want to touch it to prove that it is real. Now that I'm healed, I honestly don't care so I'll happily pull up my sleeve and let them look/touch. I enjoy seeing he reaction on their faces when they realize it IS real.

Another one (I'm sure a few more will come to me); I find it semi-annoying when someone really wants to know what the tattoos you have "symbolize" or what meaning they have. I guess the old saying is applicable... "I liked the look of this (insert tattoo type), so I got it tattooed". That's usually responded to with "do you think you'll regret that when you're older?" Holy geez. I'm in my 30s, I am a big boy now and my mom told me that I can do anything that I want. She also tells me I'm handsome and special.
But all kidding aside, I've done many other things along the way that I'll regret forever and FAR more than being an inked up grandpa.

People can do what they like, of course. But try sitting for three days at a tattoo convention paperwork table listening to people wax lyrical about their infinity symbol the size of a dime. It was just funny.
Anyway, we all have our bugaboos, and this is one of mine. You should absolutely feel free to not read this thread. ;-)

A pet peeve for me is all the kids that are new to getting tattooed that are going straight for the most visible spots on the body, such as a warped tour body suit. After spending a lot of time reading the posts and threads on LST, it makes sense for me to cover my body in a traditional manner (e.g. Torso, thighs, upper arms, then moving to more visible areas). In the end it doesn't matter what the content is or where a person gets tattooed, doesn't affect me in the slightest.

You find experts in anything you do.
People generally get excited about what they like and want to appear very knowledgeable. And with tattoos they also want to appear tough - "like I sat for 10hrs straight", I hear this brag statement so often for the most unsubstantial tattoos it is nauseating. I'm like, good for you that must have hurt! But when it's obvious they got grey lined, then lined, then re-lined again and then delicately grey shaded I'm like suuuure bud that must. have. hurt (your pocket) !
But whatever, I know what's up with my tattoos and my tattooists and what it really takes to go the distance, so good for them.
I guess my peeve is people asking about your tattoos. They don't sincerely ask about your tattoos.
Nobody gives a shit about your tattoos.
Maybe I'm being a little melodramatic...but 90% of the time being asked about your tattoos is simply the unsolicited invitation for people to just talk and show off their own. It is a penis-measuring contest. People love to talk. And love hearing themselves talk.
And perhaps I'm no different. I mean really I post here at LST often because this is one of the very few outlets I have (aside from the tattoo shop) where I can wax about tattoos and my experience with honesty (and feel like I have an audience haha). So peace to the LST cats for reading my words, whether you reply or care. Or you can just scroll past, who cares!
There is a lot of ego and attitude in the tattoo scene. So perhaps the lesson for me here is to ask people about their tattoos (in person) more often when i do see something cool or fresh. Everybody has their own story to tell.
It's all good though. Just keep getting tattooed because you enjoy it. Enjoy it for yourself. The people who truly are ass-deep (literally) into tattoos no what's up and will keep the culture thriving, pet peeves or not.

I was at a college party one night, hanging out with friends. Suddenly some dude walked up to me and said "you look stupid" and walked off. Later that night the same guy started telling me about how tattoos now a days are looked at the same as being black in the 1920's, After that, I told him to get lost and walked away. He then proceeded to tell me (almost yelling BTW) that "my parents didn't raise me like that, blah, blah, blah." at this point I was ready to leave. The last thing I said to the guy before leaving was that "my parents taught me to treat everyone with respect, I guess we were raised different."

yeah you're not going to get that $200 back, you missed the opportunity to discuss the hours charged. its done.
If you feel slighted because you were overcharged, vote with your wallet and find someone new to get tattoo from. if a tattooer was interrupting our sit to go smoke multiple times in 2hrs leaving me open on the table I wouldn't be going back. OR go back for another premium tattoo because you know it will have a good outcome and you will be happy with the results. it's not uncommon for repeat clients to get the cost rounded down. honestly, in the long run i've received more bang-for-buck from the premium artists than the ones charging the regular rates. so get over the $200 and just enjoy the tattoo. keep getting tattooed, the $200 credit will come back to you
