guitguy reacted to KristenR in Hi! Finding the perfect person to do this tattoo?
Hey!
quick intro - 30 some-odd mom to 2 preteen girls in the Boston area...
I have a few mediocre tattoos which, though I do like them, could use a bit of help. I think that only serves to emphasize how much I want go to the next level for my next (and biggest, and probably final) tattoo...
I'm planning a rib tattoo...and really want it to be awesome. I'm willing to get on whatever waitlist necessary, but it seems that the really sought after artists have to think the idea is fun and interesting to even consider taking on a new customer.
Assuming I'm willing to travel for this tattoo, how do I go about finding the right tattooist to create this for me?
I'm pretty open. The only requirement is that it incorporates ivy (since I have ivy on my inner bicep that I placed specifically so that it could visually be carried onto my ribcage when my arm is down) I love the idea of clockwork/steampunk/something old and metal and hard that the ivy can wrap around, but since I just want it to look cool and doesn't have to *mean* anything, I'm open to suggestion.
So glad to be here! Awesome amounts of information...looking forward to becoming part of the community

I have a tattoo that is probably fairly similar to what you're thinking of:
This is Seth Wood's interpretation of the Necronomicon and it goes from my shoulder to about an inch or so above my elbow. He initially did it without the illustrations in the book, but when I was at the shop at a later date he saw it and said that it needed that little bit extra so we booked that and he put those in. I wanted the 20-sided die, the other things were his idea and freehanded in. I am especially stoked on the tiny little Baphomet. It could be covered by a quarter, total fine line madness there. Because they're so detailed, I'm not sure how well the book illustrations will age, but they're a little bonus and even when they fade and blur together they aren't going to greatly change the integrity of the tattoo.
So yeah, it can be totally workable though I think you'd need to find the right artist to be able to pull it off properly.

guitguy reacted to Iwar in FST: On the Shoulders of Giants
Look what I just stumbled over!
FST: On the Shoulders of Giants is a documentary film, currently in production by Stewart Robson, a tattooer at Frith Street Tattoo (FST) in London.
This project is expected to be completed in late 2013.
Shooting started in August 2012.
Stewart has interviewed his friends and colleagues, some of them world-renown in tattoo circles but all of them have worked in the cramped infamous basement shop in the heart of London’s seedy soho district, to share this portrait of one of the most interesting, vibrant and influential modern tattoo shops.
FST: On the Shoulders of Giants
There's a bunch on cool teasers from the different interviews on the blog too. I'm super stoked for this to come out!
You gotta share stuff like this with us @Stewart Robson

Wow. I definitely should have given a slight bit more of a fuck, because I got waaaaay too drunk last night. Like texted my ex-girlfriend, cried a little, and got a little sick kinda drunk. Damn moonshine snuck up on me.
Edit:
I am pretty proud of the fact that I spelt egotistical right while that drunk, yeah!

Why would an artist disrespect their client by letting another tattooer do that same custom design? Please let's keep this forum to real-life things instead of strange flights of the imagination.

guitguy reacted to Graeme in Beer Thread
I'm a brewer and recently started brewing in a brewpub (not the sort of place that attracts beer nerds though) after nearly five years in production brewing and maybe it's because I'm not very used to interacting with the general drinking public, but I'm constantly amazed at how little people know about beer...which would be fine except for that so many of these people pretend to know things. Like probably about two or three times a week as I'm milling grain or shovelling out the mash at the end of lautering or whatever, people will watch me work and then talk to themselves about how those are hops because it's like the only ingredient in beer they know is hops. If I'm not too busy I try to educate people if they're interested and show them the raw materials and let them smell and touch them and try to leave them with a better understanding of brewing than they had when they came into the pub, but yeah, most people have no clue.

I got to do my first dragon yesterday!!! So much fun, I really can't wait to do the color. I'm pretty sure we're gonna turn it into a half sleeve, so that's exciting as well. There are no words to quantify how difficult traditional Japanese tattoos are, hahaha.
