  1. Tattoo trends come and go through "larger" society but many of the tattooers on here have been in the trade of tattooing for some time now and have seen things circle through and also see certain tattoo designs stay popular amongst specific communities. So I am wondering what tattoo designs can you not see enough of? As well as what tattoos can you never get sick of drawing and tattooing? Thanks!
  2. I had heard about this upcoming Black Flag art show from a few people then Tim Shelton was nice enough to send me the flyer (see below attached). If you are in the area you should go! The list of artist contributing is mind blowing!! Any LSTers plan on going who want to post a blog with pictures about it after the show?
  3. So I've been having conversations with friends and have noticed a new trend. Smoozing ( or as we like to call it ) sucking dick! I'm referring to all newbies that blow up because they bought their fame by being tattooed by the heros and traveling everywhere to soak it up and be in the scene. Where's the horror stories of sticking out a 12 hour shift tattooing dumb shit on dumb people when your buddies are out getting drunk on a friday night? There's no more blood sweat and tears in tattooing. Its all about who you know and where you are... Not about the hard work and I guarantee you, the badasses nuts your swinging from did ten fold the work you did by the same point in their career... Which brings me to my second point. Art used to have true "masters" that could paint their fucking asses off but they went extinct because the art fags of the world decided picasos crazy shit and pollacks paint splaters were more significant than Rubens? WTF? I remember reading about Robert Williams saying the same thing how folk art overthrew talent. It was a way for the "common man" to relate and opened the door for every Popsicle stick glueing soccer mom to call them selves artist. Now innovation is worthy of recognition, being the first is being the first and thats to be commended but rehashing is dribble. The same is true in tattooing. And you know exactly what I'm talking about... Clunky old school poorly drawn designs revered as the badess of the bad. good artist having to dumb down their shit to get the gold star? WTF? Wheres the pushing of the envelope, breaking the rules, falling and reinventing...I will say one thing, some are true masters of the hardcore oldschool look and the power can't be challenged. Its amazing, but 3/4 of the other shite isnt making the cut. And were all guilty of praising these fucks!!! Copy cats sitting in the same booth of masters invited into the brotherhood with open arms. Fuck that! I might never achieve the recognition of others to my degree of happiness but I can hold my head high because I'm not a smoozer sucking dick to look cool. Death to false tattooing!
  4. Presented by a gentleman named Maxime Buchi who appears to be the person that wears the Filip Leu bodysuit with Thomas Hooper accents... http://vimeo.com/31207876 The Leu Family's Family Iron The Leu Family's Family Iron I wasn't personally aware of his publications, though I'm sure some of you might be...
  5. I am in the process of cleaning/clearing my house out and was cleaning off some of my alters when I rediscovered all sorts of old gems. One particular piece I thought some here would enjoy is an old unused Temple Tattoo Gift Certificate from I think when the shop first opened. I have included pictures below.... What tattoo shop and/or tattooer collectibles have you gathered?
  6. As some of you know I visited San Francisco recently to get tattooed by Scott Sylvia, Tim Lehi and Grime. If you haven't seen it already you can check out my travelblog here: http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/blogs/iwar/232-oslo-san-francisco-travel-blog.html My Scott Sylvia piece is as good as healed now, so I thought I'd start by sharing that one. The rest will be posted here as soon as they are healed and I get decent pictures. All I have to take photos with is my iPhone, so please excuse the mediocre quality.
  7. How far are you willing to travel to get tattooed at a certain shop? And what shop? Why do you want to get tattooed that specific shop(s)? Did you already make the trip or is it a trip you are planning?

    BEARDS!

I think it's time that we start addressing a very important subject- beards. Do you have one? Do you love a man or woman with a beard? If you're not sure where to start on this very important topic, you could always repurpose some of our tattoo questions and make them beard appropriate: When did you grow your first beard? Whose beards have you been influenced by? Experiences while traveling with beards? Funniest beard you've seen? Worst beard you've witnessed? Beard removal or coverup? Favorite celebrity beards? And is it okay for Brad Pitt to braid his beard because he's Brad Pitt? Appropriating ideas from other beards? Best beard care? These questions are just for a jumping off point, please don't feel limited by them. And most importantly, we want pictures!
  9. It seems I've already made a fair share of enemies here with my stance on tattooers with little to no tattoos and my post-whoring to reach the point I could ask this question, and I would like to apologize to any that I offended and ask that you not hold it against me now. My question is, I am new to New York City, and am seeking assistance finding a shop (or specific artist) that does (or you think could do) Chinese style art. Specifically, I am looking for someone who can pull off an original design in this style for a half sleeve; Thank you.
  10. This year I attended a tattoo convention. It is an annual convention put on by a group that has both tattooists and enthusiasts as it's members. One night during the convention they have a dinner and you are often seated at a table with people that you don't know. This one shop from the Midwest owned by a tattooer with a single name - like Cher -had a huge entourage with him and had two large tables put aside to accommodate the group. He and his senior group sat at one table and all his younger, newer tattooists were seated at the other. As luck would have it , Don and I were also seated at this other table. This other group wasn't particularly pleased to have us at their table. Imagine being a great aunt and uncle at the kid's table at Thanksgiving. Now, between us, Don and I had more time tattooing then all the 8-12 other tattooists sitting at both tables- put together. I say that, not to boast, but illustrating the scene. I'm pretty social and tried to engage the group in conversation but it was a real strain. One girl there, said her forte was lettering. I said how much I admire " so and so's" lettering, and everybody at the table said "who?" I explained that "so and so" does beautiful lettering in the style of " so and so" and they said "who?" I further explained that " so and so" just had an interview in Tattoo Artist Magazine that was really worth reading and they said "what magazine?" I came away from the evening with the realization that the love of tattoos, tattooing and it's history - was no longer enough to bind a group of people together. That I might as well be at a table of brick layers or chiropractors.
  11. Via Cris Cleen. Extra points for the Dragon Mike/ Tiger John reference, placing him in Houston at some point Really more of a park tattoo than a prison tattoo though.
  12. I read this article this morning and found it amusing. Especially number three because if you think about majority of the individuals who use these and the variables that would make them leave or rather forget them it makes sense. GadlingSo What have you left behind on purpose or not? I'm guilty for number four and eight. Yes travel related threads and blogs: LST Preferred Tattoo Professionals Travel and Shop Choosing Favorite Restaurants Let's talk about our travels and vacations Travel to Cuba and Caribbean Traveling for a tattoo shop Traveling with Tattoos Tattooed traveler top five destinations What tattoo shops? 13. Saw this on the Daily Beast....honestly, after seeing the tattoos, I'm like, '....fucking whatever.' Garage Magazine
  14. So Chad and I were talking and one of our common interests are fine dining establishments. We joked that the first LST meetup will be at Tyler Florence's new restaurant, Wayfare Tavern....they have a room with a pool table...could you imagine 20 or so heavily tattoed diners converging on the restaurant...tyler would FREAK! Chad mentioned some of the places he is hitting up soon... so i thought I would start a thread for other gourmands....what are some of your favorite places to go. we hit up spruce alot in san francisco. mainly because it is a quick commute for us and parking is a breeze. the service is also impeccable and i LOVE the beignets. the apps and salads are better than their entrees, but i heard the burger there is amazing. we haven't gone out alot in the last 2-3 years because we keep on popping out babies, but i really want to hit morimoto's new place soon... what are your favorite restaurants and places you want to go.

    LA

Going to save up to go on a trip to LA to see my friend and tried to get tattooed by Bob Roberts or other ppl at Spotlight. Can someone shed me some light on Charlie's work and the other guys that work there? I dont know anything in LA or what's close to LA. HELP ME :)
  16. I know there are a million lists, but I would consider this more of an exercise. Typical day at the shop a topic came up yesterday, who are the top 5 people in the tattoo world that directly influenced you as a tattooer? It's a question that I have seen asked of a lot of aspiring tattooers who come into the shop looking for work, but would love to hear from some of the great tattooers on the forum. Since I am not a tattooer, I will share the best list gathered yesterday from Ross Ferrie of Acme Tattoo (formerly of Deluxe Tattoo) in Portland Oregon. This list personifies his style and attitude perfectly in my opinion. Pinky Yun Freddy Corbin Eric Maaske Chris Conn Terry Tweed
  17. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the artist Murray Sell from CT or opinions on his portfolio please? Thanks. Flying Tiger Tattoo - MURRAY SELL
  18. A recent thread from a customer's point of view got me to thinking------ as a tattooist, how do you treat visitors to your shop who are also tattooists. Have you been treated well or horribly when visiting other people's shops? I know that the poor treatment that ive received stopping in at a shop has shaped the way That I treat visitors.
  19. Tonight I was looking around the various pages/links we have under the LST Preferred Tattoo Professionals and enjoyed them all as I always try to visit these various pages to see what's going down around the world regularly. But the one I must share tonight is Luke Wessman's who is always doing awesome tattoos but also maybe because I am getting ready to head south for sometime and am dreaming of better days with money to get tattooed but stuck looking at pictures because if I had the paper I would be getting tattooed by him while down there! Below are two recent pictures he posted plus I found this little bit he wrote on Scott so it became even more relevant for the site. Any LSTers have any of his tattoos and pictures? Hope you enjoy not only the below but his site and tattoos as much as I often do....
  20. This is my first time posting a thread so sorry if it's in the wrong place. I want to get a tattoo of an edelweiss flower behind my ear with soft edges, something that looks almost like a watercolor painting. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina and I was hoping someone would have a recommendation on someone within a 3 hr drive of the area that is really good at that particular style. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  21. on vanishingtattoo.com bob baxter started a list of 101 most influential list. agree with the list so far? who's in there that shouldn't be? top 20 is yet to come but who belongs in the top 20?
  22. I haven't met many people who have success stories leaving their shops for others or to open up. Even when things are done in the shop owners benefit, and with the utmost respect it goes pear shaped too often. Any tips on how people here did it? I'd love for anyone to not go through the ex communication I have in the past. And why do we think this happens? Are we really that scared that we're going to lose our clientele to the new guy? Or is this just part and parcel of a linear career where one shop trumps the next until you're happy and settled? I would ask that any responses here obviously don't make any negative mention of former employers. This isn't what this post is about: moreso to help people "quit better" and more respectfully...
  23. So I think I'm in the clear for asking this question... at least I hope since Im not asking for anything application related... but I was wondering what everyone uses to carry their gear in when traveling? I've been looking at the huge pelican cases but wanted to know if there is anything better I should be looking at? Thanks. if somehow i crossed a line with someone by asking this... then sorry.
  24. I was just curious as to how much time other tattooers spend drawing for tattoos outside the shop. On average for me, I can spend an hour or two doing research and/ or looking at reference before I actually start drawing. And an additional 2 to 4 hours ( depending on subject matter ) on drawing something about the size of a foot ball or say half sleeve. Part 2 of this thread: I was also curious about how much time tattooers spend painting or creating additional art not directly for a tattoo, IE: prints, flash, tshirt designs, etc. And how important is that aspect of being a tattooer? Thanks everyone - Dan Martin
  25. Heard today from a friend that he was asked to try out for "New York Ink." I don't know if this is a new thing that they've tried before in NYC.. maybe everyone could make some sort of cable tv death pact or something.
