Hi all,

I'm a self confessed tattoo virgin currently planning my first tattoo down here is sunny NZ.

I've wanted a tattoo for a while but to be honest I've found the whole journey a little intimidating, I feel I hit on what I really wanted about 12 months ago and I've spent that that time NOT getting that tattoo in order to make sure it's something I really want. In the meanwhile, I was inspired by reading Magpie Hall (and NZ novel about tattoos) and Bodies of Subversion (a fantastic non fiction book about women and tattoos)... I'm a librarian, can you tell?

Anyhow, I've found it quite hard to find quality advice around tattoos, not being part of the typical tattoo crowd (though I'm starting to learn there's no such thing).

Looking forward to tapping into the gold mine of info on LST!

Welcome. I have but one tattoo, but have found the forum very helpful in gaining information while healing this one and planning future art. Do continue to read, study, and ask. Also, I would suggest visiting your best local artists. Discuss your plans, placement, etc. Also look at examples of both their sketches and finished tattoos to see if their style is what you have in mind, and their work is quality. There are several great threads on here to help you to judge quality. You may need to filter style preferences on those threads, however.

Welcome to the board.

As someone that also came here for information, it will help a lot. Just don't rush and explore this awesome site as much as possible.

Welcome, what direction are you thinking of going? Gordon Toi does some great work out of House of Natives in Aotearoa, NZ.

Thanks everyone:)

Yes I've heard of Gordon Toi, he's very well known locally for Ta Moko. I am thinking of getting a mermaid on my ribcage/shoulder. Looking forward to getting some guidance from the artist on placement! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi again all,

Just came back from my initial consult (very excited!)

I have a few newbie-type questions though - the tattoo is long and will extend from my shoulder blade to my upper-rib area. Just so I'm prepared - what position am I likely to be in for this? And just how naked am I going to have to get?

Also (and this might be one more for ladies) - how long will I not be able to wear a bra for?

No doubt I'll find these out from my artist eventually - just wanted to get some thoughts from here first!

Hi! You sound pretty well prepared, can't wait to see your mermaid. When is the appointment?

Definitely check out the ladies thread, there is some clothing & bra related info in there!

It's not until 3rd October, but I'm really excited:)

    • First let me say I've never seen exactly that related to tattoos. Second, I am NOT a doctor, so take any advice with a grain of salt and follow it at your own risk. I do have something like that which appears on my face from time to time. After multiple visits to the dermatologist, which didn't fix it, I finally came up with my own treatment. Whenever it flairs up, I just wipe the area down with plain rubbing alcohol three or four times a day to keep it dry. That usually works within a couple of days. Again, I'm not a doctor, but I don't think it would hurt anything for you to try that. Good Luck.
    • Hey, I have a serious problem! I got a tattoo in Manila 4 weeks ago. The artist is very well known and is one of the most renowed. 2 day after tattooing, small pimples began to form on my thight an many at the tattoo. 3 days later i had fever at night (just at night). After that, the pimpels began to spread very quickly all over the body. (back stomach etc..) I have now been to 3 doctors and everyone is at a loss. The blood work is fine and with no anomalies. Antibiotic ointment and cortisone ointment did not help. Xyzall allergy tablets did not help either. When i took cortisone tablets, 90% of the pimpels disappeared on the tattoo, but not on the other parts of the body. Now that I´am no longer taking cortisone, the pimpels on the tattoo are starting to grow back again very quick. On the other parts of the skin , the pimpels are sometimes lighter and sometimes stronger. This can be change hourly. They don´t hurt and hardy lever itch. Of course I´am afraid of a tattoo allergie. Has anyone already had this problem ? Does anyone know what that could be ? I add photos: 1) Photo directly after tattooing. 2) 2 Photos with the pimpels after a week 3) After 3 weeks while taking cortisone. 4) Photo of the body on the left.
