protect new ink from clothing?

First post here!

Just got an incredible piece done on my outer thigh last night -- my largest (and most expensive 💸) and also my first custom piece! (All of my other ones are things I've brought, and are 3"x3" or smaller.) This one is roughly 10"x7", stretching from below my hip joint to a few inches above my knee on the outside of my thigh.

My artist did not opt for a wet heal with Saniderm, as it wouldn't cover the full area. I've healed this way before for two of my other tattoos, and wet healed with Saniderm on the third. That being said, all of the other ones are on my arms/sternum in places that don't see a lot of friction or abrasiveness, and were also done during warmer months where clothing rubbing against the tattoo wasn't an issue. Because it's cold out now and my ink is in a place where clothing rubs against it, here's my predicament:

Going to a group fitness class on Monday, roughly 82 hours post-inking. The class involves running, boxing, and weights, but my tattoo will not be in direct contact with any of the equipment or other be touched by anyone (i.e. no partner-based exercises where someone else could be touching it), and my leg does not sweat in that area. I'm highly aware of not touching it during the class after touching any of the equipment, even if it's sanitized after every class. It will be cleaned & moisturized prior to class, and also after. The plan right now is to wear shorts to avoid friction on the tattoo, but based on placement, it won't be completely avoidable. For a ~50 minute class, what's the BEST way to protect a portion of it from friction under the part of my shorts that will be covering it? Non-stick gauze taped on? Hiking up that one leg of my shorts high enough (it's possible).

Am I able to layer two to three pieces of Saniderm the night before so it's covered for the next day? I just worry about the adhesive, as I wouldn't need to leave the Saniderm on after that day since it's already a few days into the healing. First time healing anything this big with that kind of placement!

Thanks for any input!

I got a (much smaller than yours) tattoo on Sat and plan to skip the gym today because of it but I do plan to play basketball tomorrow. I'll cover it with aquaphor and some kind of non-stick bandage and then wrap with that awesome kind of athletic tape that sticks to itself. Anyway- good luck!

for your next tattoo,

the best way IMO is to use a product called saniderm,it's a medical film that you put on the tattoo after it's done and leave it on for 4 or 5 days, then take it off and it is pretty much healed,it's sanitary and holds up very well to clothing, showers, etc, etc really great stuff.

this is the one I use, just make sure you have some before your next tattoo. https://saniderm.com/product/personal-size-10-2-in-x-2-yd-roll/

here are a few of the many times I have used it.these 3 all have it on in the pics.

Just saw all these replies!

I wound up going to class with a super loose-legged short (generally not what I wear to class) and it was fine! I didn't take much time off, but it's been healing just fine. (Still tiny peeling flakes after almost 3 weeks, though, and I'm ready for it to be done peeling!)

Dan, I healed two of my previous smaller ones with Saniderm and it was life changing to not have to moisturize constantly or worry about friction against them! My artist this time (same shop as the other two) didn't feel comfortable wet healing my piece with Saniderm due to the size of it in relation to the size of the Saniderm sheet they had there, which was a real bummer. Would've made my life so much easier! (Normally I would've just thrown caution to the wind & wet healed it myself, but the Saniderm/Tegaderm sheets I had at home were too small for my piece.)

they sell a "personal roll" that i use,it works for any size tattoo, you can overlap pieces, for large tattoos.

    • Hello, So I'm new here and reddit is just awful people so, I wanted advice. So for some reason, I allowed a tattoo be blasted down my arm. My fault I know. I'm very fit and complimented all the time how tone my arms are. So, I got a sun over a lotus tattoo. Everyone loves it. But for some bizzare reason, I can not look at myself in the mirror FOR 5 MONTHS with this tattoo. I have other tattoos, this being the 1st big and really visible tattoo. I feel like I have body dysmorphia or some shit. Its so weird. My friend is actually going to my tattoo guy BECAUSE of my tattoo. So, I don't know if anyone else has gone thru this? The tattoo looks weird to me. Not anyone else. I didn't want flowers and leaves because flowers remind me of funeral homes. I'm very yoga, my tattoos are suns, moons, lotuses. Zen shit. But I guess because I said I would never tattoo my upper arm and then tattooed my upper arm, I'm like omg what have I done?! Everyone loves this tattoo. My mother in law says it should be on stained glass and my own mom thinks it's so beautiful. There is not 1 shaky line. Not 1 flaw within this tattoo. He made the sun rays where they wrap around and up my shoulder. And it's just so jarring to me to look at. I don't get it.. or maybe just Cause I'm an idiot. It's not a broken up flow. Guy at the gas station covered in tattoos even loves it. Lol. I can't look at it. It's so weird. Just wondering what the hell is going on?! I've got other tattoos planned out, I love tattoos. I didn't want such a big tattoo and it turned out that way. I will say this, I have multiple sclerosis and went thru a relapse and I'm not sure if it messed with my brain somewhat?!?! Cause I was fine before that. I do have severe anxiety. But it was also winter when I got the tattoo. And now because it's on such display I'm questioning my design and its not at all a sleeve, its actually everyone seriously loves it. Except me. My tattoo guy drew the sun rays on me and i loved it. Then i pivked it apart. The rays r too wide, and too big and this and that. My tattoo guy is phenomenal...busts out the measuring tape and not a crooked line in any of hos work. Its just not ur typical flow of a tattoo. Like flowers and leaves flow. I wanted something different. Something that goes with my style and like i said, flowers like roses and stuff, noone buys me flowers because i hate flowers and im sorry to the flower people. Its just they remind me of funeral homes and all that. This was a custom tattoo by my tattoo artist that knows my style, and not his typical traditional style and he works with me like im a glass doll...lol. he free handed my sun and he is not cheap. And he does phenomenal work. So, i didnt cheap out. So why cant i look at I t? I feel like i ruined my arm i guess and my image. My husband says I upgraded...lol. in fact, he loves me in tattoos and my kids love it. So wtf is wrong with me? Has anyone ever experienced this? Sorry for the long post. It's should be noted, I saod out loud before getting the tattoo...mthos is not a good idea to put this here but I did it anyway. I think I didn't listen to my intuition and because I already know I'm a complete basket case, I should've listened to myself. Removal is not an option, I wint do that....plus, my tattoo guy says his tattoos dont come off...lol.  I got a forearm tattoo a month ago and I'm completely fine with it.
    • Good luck. Job hunting sucks. I got laid off from a company after 20 years and it took six months to find a job. I was in the dreaded “middle” management role at an IT company. A little over two years later my new company was  bought out and they did a “restructuring” which means the people doing the work get fired so the people sitting on their fat asses get fatter.  I couldn’t find what I really wanted so I just retired. Might be a good time to think about switching fields.
    • The only "amazing" thing I've been doing lately is job hunting. Honestly, it’s stressful. I’m always worried about having enough money for basic expenses and stuff each month. There are lots of jobs on Layboard https://layboard.in/vacancies/jobs-in-uae/jobs-in-dubai/speciality/baker, where I’ve spent most of my time. I sent my CV to several companies and I’ve got decent baking skills, even without formal training. So I hope they'll give me a chance to do a test task or something to show what I can do.
