The more the description of the desired object in the picture is better. Even if the description of the client will appear strange or silly it is better than too abstract objectless explanation.
When somebody comes to me and says he wants to warm sweet tattoo - it could be anything.I have such an explanation will cause one association and another person to another. And I will draw a sketch of which as a result will not be so that the client expected. Because at the words "sweet and warm tattoo" I will represent as an object of the lamp, and the person will be the object pillow) as very simplified example. )
So I ask people who want to tattoo to explain it as detailed as possible - then the figure will be made easier.
There are certainly exceptions, when prepared by drawing directly suited to the client, even though he had little to explain what he wants. But most people come in and ask for "something beautiful no matter what"=)

Did you not look at the drawing or stencil before the tattoo? Placement and size are more the responsibility of the the person getting the tattoo. I'm not saying to to beat anyone up, but if you are planning on getting more tattoos, it is vital that you communicate with your artist.

In the beginning I always had 2 or 3 pictures of different images I wanted when I went to the shop, I've always let the artist choose which, how big and where to put it..
He will never copy the image as is and will add his personal touch so an idea is better than a demand IMO.
Now I just walk in do a little talking and let Tycho do his magic, he knows what is best (and I never got disappointed)

That`s true, but its oft the client. Bad after care. I remember reading a Zeke Owens column about Sailor Jerry and aftercar. The Old Man was of a mind that he gave good tattoos. But once the guy got out the doir he "bath in salt water ir gasoline".
Cant make people try! But that pony was brand new, and I just hope the poor, palsey ridden artist had health insurance

This time next week my torso should be all done.
Going up to Nagaoka city to Tomo's new studio, Silk Needle Tattoo.
Looking forward to it, insofar as I ever look forward to sessions on my front. I'll be sad to be finished as it gave me a great excuse to visit Japan regularly.

Finishing the last part of this

I will finally completed my tattoo on the edge on Thursday. I waiting this two years because my tattooartist from the city that is located at a distance of 5000 kilometers from the mine. And he came to us now ^_^

I got a tattoo, and I made them to other people at festivals. Problems never was.
If tattooist to observe sanitary rules and monitors the safety clean and that no problems will be. Workplace tattoo is that it is safe to prepare and no matter it is in the studio or at the convention.

the most "dangerous" part is you will want more tattoos and are likely to spend all your money on prints and tshirts.

I agree with you about place of tattoo. Selected open spaces or hands or even face - it's bad for the first tattoo.
But not size.
You told that people can regret about first big tattoo in future because thei will not like the quality of tattoos or will not like the choice of picture. But! Maybe I'm naive tattoosrtist but i think that people must choice a picture for tattoo and tattooartist very seriuosly before first or not first tattoo. And if the choice of the person to be really serious as the choice of the master he will not regret the tattoo later out-dependence of the choice of the size of the tattoo.
In addition, for some reason, if a person is going to do a little tattoo it less serious approach to the selection of the master and often gets ugly result. Large size also contributes to the fact that the man carefully chooses what he do and for whom. it's just an observation but it still takes place.
