  1. I know a lot of (I think all) museums do this. Usually they keep stuff in the back to be able to prep it before display, "themeing" displays, no room, and generally so they can have "fresh" stuff on rotation to keep people coming back. The Smithsonian (and other places) only keep 1-3% of their stuff on display at a time.

This is absolutely the truth (and standard practice). Ideas are there to collect and to preserve, and educate and represent communities in that process. Having worked at a museum for an extended period of time, I can say first hand that this is the case.

I'm kind of surprised to see that not more is being said about this situation on here. On the one hand, Jennifer Stell is right, it isn't our business. On the other hand though, there's so much cultural and historical value to Henk's collection. I guess I just feel really bummed out about the whole thing (and apparently I don't have much else of value to really add to this conversation either I suppose).

  2. ManWoman and Dennis "Stalking" Avner in the same 24 hour period. These were people who shaped my lives and taught me that you didn't have to be "normal" to live and enjoy life (and live it to the fullest). They were the people who got me thinking about what "normal" actually means, to question gender/gender roles, to questions stereotypes, and who taught me that beauty can appear in ways that to some may be strange, but to me, just made sense. These two people changed my life so profoundly. I thank you both for having lived and for helping others to question the world around them, and to broaden their understanding of it. Both did a great service to us all.

  3. Ok, so I don't talk about politics here, and I'm not about to start (nor do I want this thread to start any political debates), but this is just batshit crazy, regardless of who your candidate of choice is. From the one and only Gawker:

Man Auctions Off Part of His Face for Romney Tattoo, Gets $15,000

    Taylor Berman

On Wednesday, cool guy Eric Hartsburg auctioned off a 5-by-2 inch spot on the right side of his face for a Mitt Romney tattoo. The winning bid? $15,000, from an anonymous Republican eBay user. This means real estate on Hartsburg's face is worth $1,500 per square inch, which is pretty good considering the trio of lip piercings nearby.

At this point, fans of Indiana-based pro-wrestling circuits are thinking to themselves, "Eric Hartsburg, that sounds familiar - how do I know that name?" Maybe a close-up of his neck tattoo will remind you.

    Full size

That's right, it's Erico, the world famous wrestler from Platinum Worldwide (no, not the limo company or the exotic home company).

Anyway, Erico didn't set out to get a Romney tattoo on his forehead; he was merely auctioning the space to the highest bidder on eBay. It just so happens Erico is on board with the cause.

"I am a registered Republican and a Romney supporter," Hartsburg said. "I didn't mind getting this tattoo because it is something that I could live with and it's something that I believe in."

So much so that he now sees real purpose in the tat. "In the beginning it was done for gags and publicity, but now I see it as a way to encourage young people to vote," he told ABC News.

He also sees himself as a sort of trailblazer for young people who might be ashamed of their conservative political instincts.

"I want young people to know that it's O.K. to be young, and it's O.K. to be a Republican. You don't have to be rich or elderly to be labeled as a Republican, and I want everyone to know that."

Unfortunately, ABC didn't follow up by asking if it was necessary for all young republicans to have their wrestling aliases tattooed on their necks. Perhaps because they know the answer is obviously yes.

  4. I have to admit that I've wanted my septum pierced for about 5 years now. I know it's trendy, but I like how it looks. I was thinking I might get it done by my birthday or with my first paycheck from my new job. It's hard to set that money aside though when there's sooo many good tattoos to get out there...

  5. @ Dan S you look like you could be Jack Passions father in those photos. .

Long live the Kings is a beautiful short film shot in France on baddass old bikes .LONG LIVE THE KINGS | AN ORIGINAL FILM FEATURING BLITZ MOTORCYCLES « The Selvedge Yard

    Attn @Kev @Dan S .

AHHHHHH!!! THAT FILM!!!!! It's so gorgeous!!!

The other day my chem teacher asked me if I was a "biker", because I have a black denim vest with a large back patch on it. I looked down at the ground and said solemnly "no." It's films and blogs like that that make me wish my answer was a "YES!", but then reality sets in about time and money, and all the other things that just drag you down once you step outside of daydream land. Reminds me of this little sleepy town called Port Costa in the bay area (just west of Martinez) but there's only one road in, and one road out, and the town only has maybe 300 people. They have this bar there with a giant taxidermied bear, which is odd that I'm interested in it because I don't drink and I'm vegan, but that's a separate tangent. Anyways, on any given Friday night, you can go there, and there's like 50 motorcycles parked outside (filling up most of the 1 block original "downtown" area, right by the railroad tracks, with the delta water on the other side). I always like to go to just be there, the silent voyeur, sitting back and taking it all in. It feels like that film and Dan S.'s photos. It feels like it's a place that's kind of stopped in time.

  6. October is always a good month for shows in the bay area

Oct 5th Lucero is playing Armando's again

HSB is that same weekend. sooooo many good acts this year!

and Red Fang on Oct 27th at Slim's

  7. We can sneak you in some Fruit Leather and tempeh. Those are things, right..?

they are indeed. i'm going to be missing a lab on popcorn that i feel like i should be able to do at home, but the lab manual says to use all this fancy lab equipment. i kind of feel like i'm going to just want to eat it.

in general, 8 would work better for me, as i might be able to go to part of class and join up with everyone at around 8:30, but obviously if 7 is better for everyone else, then that's fine.

  8. Note ; the old stylie pics are dated "66 " .

That last photo is from the book Bikeriders by Danny Lyon. That photographer is the real fuckin' deal. I saw him lecture once. He is amazing.

Also, the song Bikeriders by Lucero is loosely based on that book. I know @dcostello will be intersted in that.
