  1. a couple of years ago I was down in Hollywood walking past this old-timey Barber shop Like this. At the time I hadn't cut my hair in 3 months and my beard was down to my chest. I made eye contact with one of the barbers as I was walking. I felt like it was 1969, and I was the forward thinking freak and the barber was thinking get in here and clean up that mess son. I guess he didn't get the memo. That rockabilly thing is so 90's bro. It's all dirtball psychedelic biker now. Oh well. It was a pretty funny nano second.

HHAAHA Dean, psychedelic dirtball bikers are people, too. They were probably pumping some Royal Crown Revue or something, hope you don't harbor any haircut resentment because of it. I usually grow a pretty hefty beard at least once a year but I love a good haircut. My barber's never given me shit for it and actually likes hearing about how it pisses off my girlfriend.

  2. In context, the group left a fire burning behind them and rode up into the mountains where the light of the fire seemed to move and shift, and everyone saw it but said nothing. He is assigning a "will to deceive" to "things luminous" -- fire (, sun, stars... spirit, angels, God even?) -- that through some kind of unspoken deception changes your destiny, because you've already gone past a certain point of no return. And only in retrospect can you realize it.

Like when you look back on something and think, "Shit, I can't believe I went this way when I should've gone that way." You've already completed part of the journey, which you'll never get back, which leads you to an end that isn't what should have been. Maybe at the time you thought you were on the right path. He's saying it's more than just chance, that some "luminous thing" you'ved used as a guide has either purposefully led you astray or that it's inherent that it will/can deceive you.

  3. I'll have to make a list like this for literary quotes! The tough thing with both, I think, is to try and distill the line or lines down to bare essentials. There were a few I was thinking of but can only remember one really good (and long) one from Cormac McCarthy, which I've whittled down to a few words.

Also, do you want the words to stand alone, or be paired with a design? STILL pondering a Deftones tattoo.. been thinking about this one for literally ten years.

  4. Been there twice, did you get over to Magazine St.? I saw at least two shops but didn't have time to stop in. Don't really have any answers for you, though, as to the lack of shops. Maybe real estate is at a premium in certain spots or they've got it really regulated?

Even so, how incredible would it be to open up shop somewhere in the french quarter next to, say, Lafitte's blacksmith shop? Nothin like surrounding yourself with buildings full of history with pirates and hookers and musicians.

  5. Damn. For someone not heavily tattooed that's quite a respectable list! So far:

    Dave Wallin

    Eli Quinters

    Jake Fraser

    Todd Noble

    Eli Quinters

    Oliver Peck

    Bailey Robinson

    Andy Perez

    Gene Coffey

Matt Lautar (not sure if he's still tattooing)

and some dude named Paul whose shop burned down a couple months later. He was white and had dreads.

Also, funny, Mario, I talked to you a few days ago on the phone to see if you'd be around in a couple wks but you'll be in CA! Hopefully I can add you to the list, ha
