  1. Flying out to NY tomorrow. Appointments for 4 of us at Smith Street on Sunday. I have a question, one of the people getting tattooed is a 20 year old girl. The tattoo she wants is a barcode and the numbers are going to represent the birth dates of her sister and brother. It that a hipster tattoo? Will they do a tattoo like that at SS?

Ugh, a barcode?! Hopefully everyone else getting excited about their awesome tattoos will help change her mind. I've seen people show up with bad ideas and then end up getting something completely different and awesome. Then again some people are just too stuck on their idea of they think they want. This is why i'm glad I waited until I was 22 to start getting tattooed or I would have some stupid shit on my body.

I'm super Jealous! and can't wait to see what you get!

  2. The only art store close is like Michaels or Hobby Lobby, which are overpriced. I'm having a hard time choose brushes and what to line with, I want to try nibs, but don't know where to start looking.

Check if there is an utrecht store anywhere near you or you can just order from them. I don't really like dick blick and Utrecht usually has good sales going on. They also sell 12 packs of Dr. ph martins (i think they are about $65 which is decent). They have a good paper selection and all kinds of pens and brush pens as well.

  3. Don't forget a palette. It's easy to forget the simplest stuff :b

(The kind with the super tiny cups is what I like best since as Kev said, you hardly use more than a couple drops per color.)

I like those circular plastic ones that you can pick up for about $1. I have a bunch of those and I think they are great for mixing colors and they are really easy to clean. I used to use individual caps but it was just so much more work cleaning all of them. You can pick those up at Michael's for cheap, but everything else at that store is kind of overpriced crap.

  4. Wanting to place the order, but not sure I have everything I'll need to start. I'd hate to order and then find out I don't have what I need and have to place another order, if someone could help that'd be cool.

Check for an art store in your area. You won't have to worry about placing multiple orders if you forget something and if you have any questions about any of the product, the employees should be able to help you out (hopefully). You will save on shipping too.

  5. I was 21 when I got my first tattoo. I'm glad I waited until then or I would have some really stupid shit on my body. My boyfriend had gotten a few tattoos from Tony Sellers aka Fat Tony at Hobos Tattoo in Portsmouth, NH. I really wanted to get one so my boyfriend took me to go see Tony. I told him I wanted a rose on my shoulder and just kind of left it at that. He showed me one that he had in his sketchbook and without even really looking at it, I said sure. I remember being so nervous as soon as he started to tattoo me that I was shaking. It was so bad that he had to stop and wait until I calmed down. That rose is still one of my favorite tattoos that I have. Tony has since become friend of mine and I highly recommend him if you are ever in NH.

  6. I know I had seen many tattoos before this, but this is when I really took notice/interest and started to really become aware of tattoos. I was in fourth grade (so 9 years old I think). I was at my friends house and her heavily tattooed biker uncle was visiting from out of town. I remember sitting on the couch next to him and just looking at his tattoos and asking him all sorts of questions about them. My biggest concern was how bad they hurt. I remember him telling me they hurt really bad (probably just trying to scare a 9 yr old girl away from wanting to get one haha) he said the most painful one was on his foot and he showed it to me. It was a native american anklet with beads and feathers that went down over the top of his foot. I thought it was so cool!

After that I remember I would draw tattoos all over my barbies and dolls. Who knew that one day I would actually be tattooing people :o

  8. I mostly use Dr ph martins, I really like how smooth they dry. I have found I have hard blending the black though so I just use a tube black that also stays workable longer. I find the tube black is kind of dull after going over it with color so at the very end i will go over all the black again with the ph martins but keep the nice gradient from the first black. (I should probably just work on figuring out how to blend the ph martins black better) as for lining I used to use a fine lining brush and liquid acrylics and then I switched to nibs and now I just use pigma micron pens. I also used to use liquid acrylics a lot but not so much anymore.

  9. Fuck it man I want an Octopus Tattoo they are cool as. Like this one. SJ style. Cool as fuck.

I am not sure about your unicorn though buddy sorry...ha ha.

I have that octopus on my leg, I love it because it has nine tentacles.

Anyway, I've seen a lot of butterflies on some tough dudes. There is a waiter at a breakfast joint i frequent, with butterflies, horses, flowers and some other tough stuff. My favorite on him is a bumble bee with a skull head. He doesn't look like a sissy at all. My man has been wanting to add a seahorse to his leg. I told him to give it a horn and make it a seahorse-acorn. He thought it was a great idea. I'll post a pic once he ever gets around to getting it.

  10. on a side note, uuughh so much wrong and its not just the MACHINE tunning. this guy has been thrown out of the shop i am at. and a few bars.

I had originally picked something else but Aaron really wanted to put that cat on someone so I ended up getting it. I won't be able to post it until I get back to salt lake tomorrow. I got pretty mando lady from my friend tony who was also doing a spot at immaculate

  12. I already asked this once but i might as well try agian as its been awhile, any suggestions for Salt Lake City, UT? I went to Oni Tattoo last time and liked it, just wondering if there was any other good ones to check out? I've tried searching and cant find anything special, just dozens of iffy shops. Thanks either way!

Oni is great, I've been tattooed by shane

Another great shop is Cathedral tattoo CJ is awesome

  13. A tattooer without even any visible tattoos just doesn't really make sense to me. I'm just apprentice but I am so completely obsessed with tattooing that I can't even imagine why a tattooer wouldn't want to have tattoos. I'm not saying you have to be completely covered, I by no means am (yet). I have stuff on both arms but they aren't quite full yet and I have some on my legs as well. Being an apprentice, I don't really make a lot of money but I constantly put some aside each week to save up for tattoos and pretty much just live on ramen noodles and cereal. In fact some of my greatest "Aha!! so that's how it's done!" moments have come from being tattooed by people I really respect. Towards the beginning of my apprenticeship I had to put a few tattoos on myself before I could even think about tattooing another person.

Tattooing completely consumes me and I feel that I have been given one of the greatest gifts in the world. The fact that any tattooer would not feel the same and not be be completely engrossed in this craft that I have come to love so much kind of makes me sad.

That's my two cents but what the fuck do I know, I'm just an apprentice.
