I personally have some stories as to goofing this sort of thing up. I just called the shop where I'm getting my back done and found out that I was off the call list, its nothing personal against me I just goofed up. I got removed because I cancelled two appointments they said ( I only remember one) and that my artist likes to have people who get their pieces done in a timely and committed manner and not someone who can or will only visit twice a year; I've been very vocal with them telling them that I'm travelling from Florida to California, that I'm a college student finishing my last year and that takes precedence, and finally that the rate per hour PLUS the travel expenses hinder me making frequent trips but that I will try to make up for it in hours per session. I'm told I will be booking with low priority and that if I cancel or miss my next appointment I will result in a penalty of some form. So in essence find out if the time frame in your head is okay with your artist. I had some financial trouble hit me a while back that ruined the money I had saved for my back so make sure you have the money ready to go for your artist and if you don't talk to them before committing, I had some bad luck with my money but, maybe someone will learn from this.

If I win the Christmas lottery, you are on my list @Oiocha!
The sweetest heart award goes to @Gingerninja I just got done talking to a tattoo artist today that my girlfriend goes to about my piece. The planning, the travel, the lodging, the eating, the appointments themselves, its a logistical and financial nightmare for a dumb college student like myself; the last trip there was $1400 for the seven hours on the table alone plus another $600-$700 for the rest of the trip. I'm saving hard and focusing on TRYING not to get another piece in between. This forum darn near ruins my ability to be patient with all the killer work I look at.

@Boiled Dove Hahaha...I always recruit people to Tegaderm me. I now have my "regulars" who laugh at me (I buy them drinks or dinner which seems to help).
Even with the derm, my last few have healed scabbier and slower. Thankfully, I just had bloodwork done so I know that at least the heal isn't something else. Your torch by Chad is amazing!!
I wish I had healing slaves that did stuff for me, my parents rarely helped and my girlfriend could only help some days

So I'm here to revive this thread and talk about my first experience with back tattoos. I have never in my life felt so much sharp pain for such a long period of time. The back will be the hardest tattoo I ever finish and not just for the pain levels. The way muscles contract, certain spots have this anxious bad "tickle" to them, how adrenaline will betray you and run out not before your butt is done butt right in the middle of getting it done. If I ever see the other side of this tattoo experience while this forum is up I will complain on this forum all the up to and including the day I finish healing from my final session
Things that happened: going into mild bodily shock, shivering and teeth chattering for no reason, having stretch marks put in me from tattoo artist fighting muscle tightening, adrenaline running out while my butt is being tattooed, adrenaline running out after 2 hours during a 5 hour session, flying home on hot thighs overnight from the other coast.
Things that didn't happen: quitting, having a good time, smiling about any of it, any variety of talking with my artist- Gingerninja and JazzyMac

7 days away from Horitomo! I'm so excited, if anyone wants to come see a big wuss getting a big puss on his back come say hey. I also picked up two October dates days after the Bay Area Convention for a solid 10 hours. My first 20 hours will be over in no time it looks like.

@oiocha - All I'm getting is a wee little skull bead but still excited! What's the latest on your monmon cat?
@jnin - Scott is crazy fast! I swear that I had just sat down and he was like "you are done". What did you get from him? Is it your profile picture?
I have the drawing and its better than anything I had thought up in my head, I'm booked and ready to go the first weekend of August. I've got just 7 hours booked: 2 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday everyone's telling me thats enough for a good start.

Kiku is within the top 3 of my list of next artists to get tattooed by right next to Greg Whitehead. So so envious. My hometown Inksmith & Rogers will be up there too.

Scheduled for that day, because it is my last day at work. Once you have been to Sarah a few times she will book you on an email. She has a way to handle out-of-town clients, just email her. She likes cash, bourbon, and cool rocks.

Cash and Bourbon in Kentucky, that seems like telling people you like eating and breathing, its obvious.

I had finally achieved a measure of balance until I started my side-piece last month. Now I'm left heavy and starting to wonder what to do with the right side . . .
We didn't finish the left side Monday like we had hoped, and I've got a destination beach wedding/vacation to attend in early July, so I couldn't schedule my 3rd and last side-piece session until early August. It's close, but poop.

Well, I dropped by the shop Feb of 2016 to get on his list and was told it was a three year wait! @Oiocha
THREE YEARS THATS NUTS!!!! For which waiting list though? He has three lists: One shot/Small stuff, Sleeves/Multi-session, Back pieces.
-
The piece is from my shoulders to the bottom of my thighs, all 7 hours will be for lining I assume, I'm not very confident in my ability to guess how fast he goes versus the size of my back or how much we have to line versus shade and color, its all new territory for me. A year and a half into the waitlist for Horitomo? Which waiting list are you on and how big is it when you got on it?

@Oiocha That is awesome!!! When is your appointment?
I don't have one yet, he told me he wont contact me until he is done or almost done to start making arrangements. I anticipate August will be when I go to get started.
Edit: They called 30 minutes later asking me to set an appointment date, I'm in for August 5th for 2 hours and August 6th for 5 hours.

I snagged this from Benny Haft over at Allied last week.
I finally finished my torso after five years, done by Ian Dana Camp (formerly of Good Faith in Boston) currently at Adventure Tattoo in Nashville. He was all booked up in Boston before his move, but I luckily caught him doing a guest spot in Philly right after he moved.
I saw the Hungry Eyes tattoo, I wish I had thought of it first. That torso is killer, Tattoo of the Month any month they do birds or chests.

I want a tattoo from him so bad, he is high on my list. His work is indeed bananas!

Thanks, I'm not feeling the stoke right now, I will once I get the call and see the sketch but for now its nose in the books and training for my sports season.

@Gingerninja He said it would be about 3 months before he finished the drawing and his assistant called me. So I'm guessing that June-August I will get a call to schedule.
Traveling to get a large tattoo a logistic nightmare?

It's certainly something, everyone seems to think he is being pretty darn tough about it and his timeline is super tight too. I'm gonna get it done hell or high water! Just going to get my ducks in a row before I try to get back in there and risk another blunder.
