Nobody on this forum is going to tell you to get tattoos from a basement scratcher. Tattoos if done properly are also not scars... Maybe you’ve already visited a few basements if that’s what you think... Nobody can predict how a tattoo will look in 20 years. Everyone’s skin is different and everyone takes care of their skin differently. If you are worried about how it will look in 20 years then you might be a little too obsessive for such a commitment.

Whether you give an explanation or not is up to you. Whether the person asking thinks you’re rude or not is up to them. If you are comfortable not explaining it when people ask then I’d say it’s fine. I just want to warn you that everyone who sees it for the first time is probably going to ask you about it. I personally like the idea of getting some type of image instead of the Chinese characters and the script. I know you know what you think the characters mean but have you verified with someone who speaks and writes in that language? There are more than a few people walking around with Chinese symbols on their body thinking they mean one thing but it’s really another or is completely wrong. Chinese characters are complex and slight variances can alter the meaning. The person tattooing you probably won’t speak or read the language either. It’s going to be 100% on you to make sure it’s done precisely.

Agree 100%. Also, be prepared for almost constant questions about the meaning.

Like Dan said you want it to be correct when your arm hangs at your side. Also just going to reiterate make sure the symbols are correct to what you think they mean. You can find a lot of Chinese symbol tattoos from people online that are not what they think they mean. talk to a reputable artist about size and placement. You don’t want to go too small on text as it will blur and be illegible over time. Sorry to hear about your wife.

on your arm between your wrist and elbow is perfect IMO,the characters could be a good size there to look great,
be sure and find the right artist that does that kind of work,
and you don't want to read it yourself,it would be upside down, you want it so if you drop your arm and show it the person looking at it can read it.
and lastly but most important,be sure of the character's meanings 1000%

All my awkward gaps I let the artist decide what he thought would work best to fill the spot and blend in with the rest of the arm. Turned out far better than anything I would have probably come up with.

I was given a load of sunblock for those with tattoos, so I use that. But mostly I just stay out of the sun.

when I go on vacation to the islands or know I will be in the sun for a while,
I slather on the 50spf and sit under a cover,
otherwise I just use Aveeno all year every day(no sun block),
I stay out of the sun as much as possible,

I got the Kiehls today and used it after my shower. I absolutely love it! It keeps my skin moisturized much longer than any lotion I’ve used and really brings out the color of my tattoos! Great product worth the money. Thanks everyone for all the recommendations.

I was actually talking to my wife about this stuff. She used to work at Sephora while going to grad school and she thinks I’ll like it. She ordered me some last night I’m pretty excited to try it. Do you apply it right after a shower when your skin is still damp?

I use coconut oil for moistuzing all year long. Get the refined kind if scent is an issue. When my skin is —really— dry I use Palmers Cocoa Butter. It has a distinct cocoa scent, though, so that may not be an option for you. However, it’s one of the few lotions that doesn’t make my skin itch or burn AND it’s cheap. Edited to add: I am fairly certain that I’m allergic to lanolin, which is what’s causing the itching and burning mentioned above. I also get a remarkable red rash from wool socks!
