Jeff does real nice work..The shop is kind of out of the way,off of the highway in an industrial area.The building looks like an airport hanger.They just legalized tattooing down there a few years ago,and most of the shops are in industrial areas.Hero is the best shop down there.

I didn't mention Mike because I assume he's probably booked up for over a year.

I met this girl in NYC today that had four cats on her upper from Juan.They were realistic,but done in a traditional style,and were beautiful.

I find myself feeling the same way about a lot of Scott Campbell-related things. The fact that he charges $300 an hour is insane to me, but then again, he doesn't seem to be hurting for business, so I guess he wins. I'd read a few years back that he had a $1000 minimum, but I'm not sure that was true.
Speaking of money to burn, he's created several pieces of art using sheets of US currency. Seems gauche to me, but again, I read about it in numerous places, so he's getting the press he wanted. He also did artwork for Camel Cigarettes, which is not that cool to me, but seemed to garner him a lot of notoriety.
And while part of me thinks that he's an asshole for making this video--and tattooing someone on a nasty ass bench under conditions that would shock a Tattoo School graduate--another part of me is very impressed with the end product. And that's something I can say about many of his tattoos: they're good. Really good.

and to address what brian was saying about his buddy's meeting girls in the shop that they tattooed and who are now interested in tattooing. i hate to sound like a shit head but from my personal experience, thats going to be a shit show and i wish them the best of luck

That dude does real nice work.I remember seeing his stuff when he was only tattooing a few years,and it was good.You know he started out in NH,and he does travel to the east coast to do conventions and guest spots.There's a lot of talented tattooers in Portland.I got tattooed by Jerry Ware@ Atlas Tattoo :: Portland, Oregon They have some real good tattooers there too.What are you thinking of getting from Ryan?

I like black & grey for portraits..Adam Barton has some in his portfolio where he combines realism with a traditional background that's cool.

I was down the shore at my cousin's house,and was standing in his living room,and my grandmother was sitting in one of those plastic white chairs.Well she had her cane leaned against the wall,and it fell on the floor,and her chair started to shake.I thought the house was haunted..She was like what's going on someone's shaking the chair.It was pretty funny because she kept on turning around to see who was shaking her chair,and there was nobody there.

Don't sweat the small stuff...And it's all small stuff.I read that in a book..Forget the title..I'm sure I probably come across as opinionated,and maybe even a dick.I think we come on these forums and express our opinion's about subjects,and guess what,we always don't agree with each other.So let's just agree to disagree.Don't take things personal.

I remember visiting Spider Web's shop on Broadway near Union Square Park.What a character..He always had young girls at his shop just hanging out.Those were the days where everyone was underground.I remember i called east side ink to find out their location.They told me to go to a certain phone booth which was near their shop and call them so they could see me,and then they told me where the shop was.I remember walking down the stairs to the basement studio,and there was no flash on the wall,just tattoos drawn up hanging in the hall,and in each artists room.What a magical place that shop was.

It seems to me the tattooers who don't have any tattoos,or have just a few got into the business to make a living,and not for the love of tattoos.They probably didn't have any interest in getting tattooed before,but came to realize they could make a decent living doing them on other's.

I call gimmick.
I know some people who offer Japanese style tebori and one of them is Japanese and the other learned in Japan from a master. Outside of that structure it doesn't seem to make much sense aside from the points mentioned by David. Basically fake authenticity in place of talent, practice and hard work.
Real authenticity is hard to find but many tattoo clients look in the wrong places. I've seen too many white dudes with botched Japanese style work done 'with bamboo' in Thailand. I guess they think if it's done by any guy from Asia it's authentic, right?
I'm not sure how popular it is in the US or Canada but at conventions in Europe and the UK there used to be a few (mostly white) guys with facial tattoos working by hand, trying tattoo styles from the islands in the south seas. Even going so far as to sit cross-legged and stretch the skin with their bare feet.
Often they were working within spitting distance of a great tattooer who knew more about their field of 'expertise' but he wasn't wearing a sarong and was tattooing snakes, eagles and skulls all weekend, listening to Motorhead.

I was a bit shocked that she had passed.You wan't to see the happy ending where she get's sober and continues to do what she loves.As a recovering addict myself,it's challenging to stay on the straight and narrow.It's probably more challenging when your famous,and have all that money.But in the end,at least she got to do something she loved,and was able to express her unique talent to the world.

Here are the latest additions. The Tiger is on my wife, the Fudo sword is me, both by Matt Arriola. The Christ is on me by Vinse One. I have three or four sessions left on my back, but Matt is moving to NYC so I won't be getting more work on it until November. All of this work was done within the last two and a half months so now I am broke.
