I had this happen with Jeff Gogue. I lived down the street from his shop for many years. He wants free range on his work. I'm cool with that, but some are not.

don't worry about it. if you're open to giving them some freedom to change it up some or do their interpretation then it will be fine...most likely. also, it sounds like it wouldn't be the best experience if the artist is just trudging through something they aren't really into.

and if they aren't into then keep looking or maybe rethink your idea some. i've def had ideas that i decided i wasn't into after a little time.

'Derm is great and I've had a lot of success with it in the past.
However, since application is an issue, I wouldn't recommend it in this context. I'm 7 sessions deep in my backpiece and haven't had any issues sleeping on the fresh tattoo doing the following:
    1) Wash tattoo the before bed after the appt.
    2) Re-wrap using saran wrap and medical tape
    3) Wear a loose T-shirt overtop
    4) Carefully remove in the morning (soak T-shirt in shower and remove there if your wrap-job didn't hold up and some of the tattoo is sticking to the shirt).
    5) Wash tattoo and go about your day
After the first night I haven't had much issue with a lot of plasma weeping. Sleeping was pretty "normal" after that. Not saying it's "pillow-soft-comfortable", but it's about as normal as can be the first few days post tattoo. Also, with my backpiece the sessions are almost always more heavily biased to one side of my body than the other, so I've gotten away with sleeping on my less tattooed side, pretty comfortably.
    Good luck!

Tegaderm is awesome and have used it on the last 4 of my tattoos. I did not use it on my back piece. I did however sleep on my back and I don't personally think it made any difference. I can't sleep on my stomach and told the tattooer straight up that I was going to sleep on my back.  He didn't think it would be an issue and it never seemed to be. That being said, lay still and try not to move around when sleeping. Easier said than done i guess.
But if you don't have any adhesive allergies, I can not recommend tegaderm strongly enough. The stuff is a total game changer.

ya I just have one full sleeve and it was not an issue sleeping with the pressure on the fresh tattoo. But I know back pieces are quite challenging in terms of pain. With my neck issues I don't wanna be stuck thinking well now what .........can't sleep on my front or back.....etc.
unfortunatrly I live alone and my dog had no thumbs or knowledge of hygiene *rim shot* but I could probably get some help from a friend.....I will keep that product in mind.
ya for my sleeve I just slept with a fresh bandage and a long sleeve shirt which was glued on the following morning ?

I second the tegaderm/saniderm option. I've had my full back lined and shaded in 2 consecutive days, after first day slept with cling wrap, second day i kept cling wrap on for 4 hours, showered, air dried and got tegaderm on entire back. Kept it on for 6 days and it was basically healed.

Waves and rocks, my backpiece extends all the way down.
Black in the crack, it creates a shadow effect, to make the tattoo fit naturally on the buttocks.
Go as deep as you and the tattooer feel comfortable with. If you don't, you'll be wishing you did and you will hesitate returning to the painful memories.
My ass tattooing session was a very valuable lesson in humility and vulnerability.
Plus my black ass looks fantastic now.
You should definately bring a wooden spoon or ask your tattooer for a piece of old leather to bite down on. Seriously.

I have a large side torso piece that came down a little on one butt cheek, and all I can say is for me the butt is the most painful place I have ever gotten a tattoo.I like showing my tattoos, and I can show most of them with shorts and a tank top,but a ass tattoo would be the weirdest one to show off ! LOL

I would still try and use a product like Saniderm, have someone apply it for you and you can forget about any issues with healing, really this stuff is great.that way you can sleep on your back,
ya,IMO it's going to be minor irritation to lay on it,but it will be safe for your tattoo and bed sheets to sleep on it.
IMO the irritation of laying on a tattoo is different for all of us just like anything else,

you could use a dermal product like www.saniderm.com and sleep on your back (if it doesn't irritate you to lay on it), and you can shower, wear any clothing, etc, etc, take off the Saniderm or similar product in 5 days and it's pretty much healed.
this is a good deal ,I always get this one http://saniderm.com/product/personal-size-10-2-in-x-2-yd-roll/
how big is the tattoo going to be ?

Was wondering if you do sleep on your back would it be kosher to just wear a tshirt to sleep in. That way if it sticks at all, you just need to jump in the shower with the tshirt on? Or has that not been a problem for anyone that has had there back done?

Sorry to hear about your leg, ya so far i just had my first appointment so black ink only. My main concern is if the product my dermatologist prescribed is going to be for my tattoo. My next appointment is like a week away and i don't wanna go in there with an active skin problem. The allergic reaction is only on the back and inside of my tricep and i had the whole arm done. I wasn't planning on using red on my tattoo anywhere but thanks for the heads up. It might have been the ink i had a reaction to, but if it was would it only be on one spot ?

I had always heard to never use Neosporin on a fresh tattoo.
I recently had some work done on my thigh, and am having some kind of reaction as well. It's happened twice before to me as well. My theory is I am allergic to the ink of the marker when my artist free hands anything on me as I've never had a problem when something has been stenciled, or if I'm sitting just for a shading session
Fluocinonide is what my doctor prescribed for me. It's a steroid cream, and will bring down the raised areas and redness while I use it (2 weeks at a time), but I know the tattoo will raise back up once I stop using it. Your body just has to get used to whatever is irritating it. This once took over 5 months for me, but the tattoo finally settled in. It sucks and is annoying. Hope you heal up soon.

    Hi
I also have really sensitive skin and developed an allergic reaction to something in the red ink which was used in my tattoo in December last year. None of the red areas healed properly but one really festered... I had it tested and it had turned cancerous. I've had surgery to remove it today and they took a big chunk from my leg. There are a number of small studies looking into allergic contact dermatitis from red ink. My advice would be if your skin is sensitive to stay away from red. My case is rare but it also really sucks! There's more info in my intro post from yesterday.
My dermatologist has prescribed dermol cream to use on the remaining red areas, he said it may fade the red but that this should also reduce the allergic response.
    All the best

@Tuchaka I wouldn't hesitate talk to call up your tattoo artist before your appointment and see what s/he thinks about both the prescribed product and the condition itself. EDIT: Just read your first post again and saw you already did that. D'oh!
Also for anyone who has had a reaction to a certain color before, bring it up to your future tattoo artists as well. I have 3 tattoos with red in them but I've only had a reaction with the first one, different ink will have different ingredients and your tattoo artist can work with you to avoid the issue in the future.

I also agree that most of the recommended creams are not antibiotic creams, but rather barriers to prevent bacteria from entering the wound. That being said, most of the products have petrolatum which if can promote color oozing. The key int to have as thin of layer possible to make a barrier. This can be hard as it's difficult to rub in on a fresh tattoo without disturbing the tattoo. Me personally will dab the oitment on until its covered by just gently tapping around that tatto with a couple fingers instead of rubbing. I then take a soft cotton towel to gently dab (not rub) the areas, so that it leaves just enough for you to know its there, but not seeing any un-uniform areas. This last time I didn't use any H2Ocean or Aquafor, but rather "redemption", which is similar to hustle butter for the first 3 days. I had almost no color seeping and the redness and inflammation was almost non existent. This is the same stuff they use on you when you are getting the tattoo. Once the peeling starts, I use lubriderm. While it seems like it dries out quicker than some of the alternatives. I find that because it leans more toward the watery side than thick, it goes on easier without me feeling like I'm messing up the tattoo by rubbing it in.
