Thanks for the welcomes. Ha! No, but I know and appreciate that a lot of folks like to collect different pieces from many different tattooers. But I've gradually been getting a suit, more or less, from Tim Lehi. Way before I started that, I'd wanted to go to Eddy D. and spoke to him back when he had 222, but by the time I got around to getting work again and could afford it, he moved and wasn't really taking new clients. Then I took my time in choosing the right artist, went about it differently from when I was young. I'm sure you all understand that. During my "research" process, I checked out NY Adorned, esp. Chris O'Donnell, Paul Booth's place, some others, but once I found Black Heart, I knew it was right. I'd be interested in hearing from folks about how they made their choices of tattooers as well.

taaarro reacted to Graeme in Another NY Times Article: Tattooing Transition from Cult to Fine Art
My short response is that tattooing doesn't need validation from the New York Times or the art world.
My longer response is that is anything interesting at all being said here? It's obvious that the person who wrote the article did essentially no research at all into tattooing or the history of tattooing and how it intersects or not with fine art. I mean, she writes about some jagoff performance artist who made a video of him tattooing prostitutes for heroin money in 2000, but not Ed Hardy's 2000 Dragon Scroll that exhibited in a gallery the same year? Or how about the idea that tattoos are suddenly collectible now that the fine art world has taken a bit of a shine to them? Because there weren't tattoo collectors before? And that tattoo collecting isn't at all the same as fine art collecting for the simple fact that tattoos have no exchange value? That's just a start of what's wrong with the article.

I've often wondered the same thing. My guess, as others have suggested above , is that it's just a matter of giving your tattoo artist freedom and maybe specifically asking for something different.
For my ROA back piece, I requested that it not be a simple old-timey one, but didn't ask specifically for UFOs or any of the other craziness I happily ended up with.

Yes! Just Kids is great and makes the old New York sound sooo good. I'm currently reading Justin Spring's Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade. Steward's tattooist name was Phil Sparrow and his life is completely astonishing. A great read for anyone interested in Phil Sparrow, Gertrude Stein, Alfred Kinsey, or gay culture in the 1950s among other things.

Just Kids is goddamned amazing. I can't really say enough good things about that book...if you're into Patti Smith you're going to love it as a given, but her whole depiction of being a poor artist in New York in the 60s, her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe, it's just incredible.

I want to get tattooed by Jeff Rassier ASAP.
When I got tattooed by Robert Ryan, all I asked for was a skull with a hand coming out of it. He pretty much took care of the rest.

What about roses with a black outline made by people who have been tattooing for over 50 years?

I got this one from Tony D'Annessa around Easter time this year, it's from one of his old roll-up flash sheets.

I'm trying this thing where I heal one tattoo at a time. It's tough though. I'm sure it's better for the body and what not.
I used to heal like, 3-4 tattoos at the same time. This guy that was getting tattooed next to me noticed that, and he mentioned that I should take vitamins and iron pills.
Does everyone else heal 1 tattoo at a time? Or do you guys heal multiples too?

Thanks for your comments! I'm very excited with the piece. I forgot to include another part of my experience that I think you all would appreciate...
So when I was going crazy with anticipation waiting to see a drawing for the piece and checking my email a billion times a day, Eddy sends an email saying that his "old friend Dan Higgs" said "whoa" three times in a row when he saw the drawing and that that was a very good omen. And then my head almost exploded ;)
