  1. this. no one said any kind of gossip or anything. in regard to both chad koeplinger and thomas hooper, both discussion where about where they were relocating to because people were talking about wanting to get tattooed, so i think this is out of hand or weird.

I am not sure what you are talking about. You do think it's weird or you don't think it's weird?

  2. Anyone else find it kind of weird the way we discuss tattoo artists' lives on here? Like, they'll mention something in passing, or comment on an IG post, then all of a sudden it's a topic of conversation (it came up with Chad Koeplinger earlier, and I feel happens a fair bit around here). I guess it's just kind of being 'out there', but I still find it a little bit weird the way tattoo artists have fans.

I missed whatever was discussed about Chad Koeplinger, but I don't think that it is out of bounds to talk about where an artist may or may not be relocating to. I don't get to spend as much time on here as I did in the past so maybe I have missed it, but I don't remember ever reading anything gossipy or all that personal about a tattooer on this forum.

  3. So...I e-mailed Saved NYC to get some more info on Hooper's wait list or what it takes to set something up with him. It's been about a week...anyone have experience with trying to set something up with Hooper?

I would call Rock of Ages in Austin. Word is that he is moving down there this year, and even if he isn't he has been making trips down there on a pretty consistent basis. Dreyfus the shop guy at ROA is very helpful. I called down a couple of weeks ago to book an appointment with Steve Byrne. I am taking a short trip to Austin so I didn't have a lot of time available to get tattooed, but he was very helpful and got me in.

  4. Southwest flies direct to San Jose, Probably a four hour plane ride and you would be there. Getting there is the easy part regardless of where you are in the country. It's actually securing time and hoping that can work with my work schedule and my wife's.

I am not opposed to getting something small by hand, but don't think I would be down to get a whole rib panel done that way. I admire the tradition and the craftsmanship, but there is a reason most tattooing is done by machine.

Anyhow after I little more thought and realizing I can fly anywhere, I might toy with the idea of travel to Texas as my wife says she would want to visit Austin anyway, but ultimately it will be about which tattooer is most flexible and available at this point as I feel like anyone I will be seeking out is going to be equal as far as skill.

I really like my Japanese mixed with a little Western flavour. Are you looking for ultra traditional Japanese or are you open to some American influence in it? If you go to Austin you have a lot of great choices. Trevino, Brooks Seibert, Chastain, Hundahl, and Steve Byrne. I know that people don't usually think of Steve for Japanese, but I really like his Japanese style work. If short flights are in your future you should also consider Mike Roper. I recently saw a backpiece of his (in person) and it was impressive to say the least.

  5. That looks so incredible! A 5-hour session on the ass and hammies is absolutely no joke. I endured a few of those myself and am glad they're behind me (no pun intended).

Hogg is right. Five hours back there is no joke. I know that I have posted my back on here before, but I don't remember if I posted progress photos. Here is a link to my Flickr page. I took a photo after each session. The entire tattoo took about 22 to 25 hours. The first session was an hour and a half, and the second was about the same. That means that I put in over twenty hours the last three. It was rough, but now it is done so fuck it.

  6. I loved the DeVita episode's, but there's one thing in Thom Devit's story that's always left out, and that would be Tux Farrer. Why does he always go so unnoticed/unmentioned? There were parts when Nick Bubash/Thom mentioned "Tux" but they never went into detail as to who he was or what he did. Especially considering that he's tied, directly, to both Dan Higgs and Thom DeVita, who are both considered very "big name" types in this niche of the tattoo community. Does anybody know anything about him? All that I could gather was that he had a shop in Baltimore in the eighties near a Greyhound station, learned under Thom Devita, broke in Dan Higgs, and tattooed a young Scott Weinrich (also known as Wino from the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan and just generally the coolest guy ever). I wish I could find out more about him!

I think that Irezumi is the one to answer this question. I am pretty sure that he was tattooed by Tux, and I think that somewhere in one of the threads Tux is talked about a little bit.

  7. Ah, I was wondering about that because I thought he'd stopped tattooing so I was surprised to see him guesting in Seattle.

The deVita book Hardy Marks recently published is also essential and is a real bargain at the $30 or so it lists for.

He did retire, but Oliver Peck helped convince him to come back and tattoo from time to time. He will be posting any guest spots on Instagram so take the opportunity if it comes up. And yes the Devita book is a bargain at $30. I own it and look at it almost everyday.

  8. Scott does handle the sale of Thom's art, and he doesn't get paid for it. He just genuinely loves Thom and wants to see him recognized, and to receive some financial compensation for the great work that he produces. I have been tattooed by Scott twice, and both times I got great tattoos and had a great time. He is one of the nicest and most intelligent people you will ever meet. He recently decided to start tattooing again on a semi regular basis. If you have the chance to get tattooed by him do not pass it up. In my opinion he is one of the best tattooers in the world. I know that sometime in late January and early February he will be in Dallas, and then in Austin. If you want a tattoo that you can not get anywhere else then find out when he is tattooing near your town, and get there.

  9. Holy hell, you're going for it! By the time I saw Scott Harrison would be in town, it was already too late... he's all booked up. I'm hoping to drop by on 12/12, but now I might have to swing by throughout the weekend too and see what's up.

I'm telling you... that vegan Thai buffet is legit. It's called Araya's Place. I'm not even close to being vegan or vegetarian, but I love that spot!

You should stop by on Friday. It would be great to see the work you got at the SF Convention. I am getting tattooed by Scott around 2pm, and then Matt next, and then hopefully Marco after that. Marco is tattooing my wife as well, but we are not sure on the time. After all of that I am not sure if we will have enough money to eat, but if we do we will be going to Araya's Place.

It is going to be a good time. Trevor said they are having a party on the 12th, but we can't make it till the weekend.
