Yes, I think it has even more meaning for me than I initially realized. And it being on my arm is the biggest problem: it is too visible both for me and for the people around. But from the very beginning, I wanted it to be visible for me and I didn't care much for the people around (until I actually got the tattoo and started reading on the internet how tattoos are perceived in the academic world. It was a bad idea, don't ever do it!).

But the community here is amazing and I am very glad I am a part of it now!

I'm a prof and so is my husband - two academics, visible tattoos and zero issues.

  2. Interesting!

Seeing as you've been working with your Dr already - your only option would be to look at having your Dermatologist remove it - As my understanding of common tattoo removal goes it involves a laser breaking down ink pigments (different wavelengths affect different colour molecules)  - this wouldn't affect a phosphorescent pigment - your best option would be to have it removed surgically if it's something you are concerned about. LS has an excellent tattoo removal thread with some great advice by a seasoned pro.

Is it possible for someone to apply a crude tattoo without your knowing? Sure depending on your state at the time - the 80's were a thing for sure. Was it likely applied with a tattoo machine? Probably not - more likely your skin was cut and pigment was rubbed in it.

    Good luck!

As satisfying as snark can be, I wonder if these threads might not be discouraged if they were just ignored.  Otherwise you're kind of granting their wish for attention. Let them die and sink down the page.

I agree with you that it's a frustrating situation.

    This - all this...

Honestly watching the number of long-time valuable posters (many of whom were artists) disappear I'm guessing is for the same reason I rarely post - I'm tired of the snark. if it's lame ignore it and let the post sink.  I'm here to talk good tattoos - not torture those with bad ones.

  4. I've never been tattooed by him but a friend of mine has. He does good realistic and his shop is pretty well respected in Toronto. The other shop I've heard talked about in TO for realism is The Black Pearl on The Danforth. If you are looking for cool black and grey check out Jennifer at the Pearl https://www.instagram.com/jenniferlawes/  or Alex Snelgrove at the Okey Doke https://www.instagram.com/snelgrove/ she not currently taking new work but her books will open up in a few months.

Yeah, Canada is awesome! Just came back from my 4th trip, this time east coast only. I did see quite a few tattoos when I went to the beach near Montreal. They are naturally more visible at the beach though. Can't remember noticing that much in Canada apart from over there. As opposed to Chicago. It turned out that we were staying in a pretty hip neighbourhood and there were so many tattooed people around, that one could almost feel out of place without any. Very odd indeed. Not sure I liked that that much ;-)

Come to Toronto of Vancouver - you'll see tattoos just about everywhere

Went to CatConLA last weekend with my daughter!!! We had so much fun. Saw Horitomo, Molly, and Taki from State of Grace. We bought a ton of cat related stuff, two of my favorites being prints featuring David Bowie and Robert Smith w/cats! We bought @DJDeepFried a monmon cat baseball cap. I'm still wanting another monmon cat tattoo... someday...

I saw on your instagram! You two looked like you were having tonnes of fun! (I still want some of the monmon kitty gear!)

  7. Fire started next door as an accident and spread through a few buildings. It was a four alarm fire. Someone lost their kitty but no one else was hurt - from what I've ready their machines and some of the art survived. No news on where everyone is setting up in the meantime.

    ____

Added on to say we talked to Franz today and most of the machines, books and art were salvageable and they've found a new location and will be re-opening in a few weeks - all around good news.

  8. Hey guys,

Sad news out of Toronto, the Okey Doke was hit by a fire last night, according to India's Instagram, they'll be closed until further notice - if you have an upcoming tattoo with any of the excellent artists there contact them ASAP. I know the shop owners here in TO are close so I imagine you'll see the Okey Doke crew guesting around the city.
