Really. 10 (even little) tattoos, each an image that would remind you in particular of your visit to that specific place. That's what will make you smile 10, 20, 30 or 40 years from now.

Welcome to the board. I like the sentiment behind the tattoo, and I think you have some valid concerns about it, and I'd suggest that you rethink the idea and maybe instead of getting ten letters individually done on your travels, when not get ten tattoos instead? Kind of like how when you look at old pictures of sailors and their tattoos and how there's a story there if you know how to read them. There are so many great tattooers all around the world you could end up with a really amazing collection that will remind you of the places you've been and the things you've experienced there.

So, to start, your tattoo is going to cost you, probably, like $1000, for one lousy word! Most decent shops have a minimum charge for tattoos, in the places I've sen in major cities, it typically runs about a hundred bux an hour. You will get charged that regardless, one letter or the entire dictionary.
Add that to the drawbacks you list above, maybe think about getting "wanderlust" tattooed on you in whatever language you find the locals speaking...English, German, French, Liverpudlian, whatever. Pick a spot, maybe on the legs, since they motte you everywhere you travel, and make a band of the words?
    Just an idle thought.

I haven't played anything new for like 5 years. My favorite game was morrowind. Wish I still had my old Xbox, had like 350 hours on one character alone. So many days of ditching school and going exploring in that game.

Wow @irezumi you gotta be like 80 years old. Most arcade games (here at least) cost anywhere from $1 to $7 and you only get one life.

Dude just really doesn't know what he is talking about, probably has been misinformed by people when he asks questions, and just uses that misinformation to form his own conclusions. His view of tattooing is one who has too much exposure to it on the internet and probably not enough time around actual tattooers. The fabricated facebook drama and stories of photo shop fraud that most people just ignore are the biggest problem with tattooing?
I have a whole rant in my head about realistic tattooing, but I don't want to seem like I don't like it or respect it, but just don't think it's any fancier or more creative than any other style. In a genre where a lot of the work is exact reproduction of images(some of them copyrighted) it's hard for me to listen to someone complain about being copied. Of course your realistic color portrait of Michael Keaton as Batman looks the same as the next guy, you used the same image as reference, and if it didnt look the same, I would be worried. On the other hand, I caught someone in the traditional realm rant the other week about someone ripping off their commisioned tattoo drawing that they posted on every social media site out there weeks before they tattooed it, not to mention the image was of a very famous cartoon character. Meanwhile the best tattooers in the world keep putting out amazing work and don't have time to deal with such nonsense.

I think you touch on the real part of this conversation that needs to be in the foreground. There is not one style that is "better" than the other. However, to someone who is true to tradition and practices traditional Japanese tattooing...my bet is that they see neo-traditional as sort of a "cheapening" of their tradition. "old" vs "new" kinda...
Also, @DJDeepFried...there are some who would not even consider H3 traditional Japanese...although almost everyone would agree that H2 was...
@kylegrey I don't think of my defintion of "traditional" as the master definition. It is just the first set of rules I apply to tattooers and their work when I see it. I agree that there are many people doing things in a traditonal manner equally as well or better than some tattooers decending from one of the families. For my sake, I feel the need to limit "traditional" to tattooing done or learned in Japan. I definetely have more thoughts on this, but I just wanted to pop in and make a quick post...work calls.

I've talked with my tattooer about this before and from what he says about tattoos causing harm to the body is more likely cause of cross contamination. Like the US artists worked with the same needles, but something that never happened in the US is the after tattoo bath. When a group of yakuza were all finished for the day they would all take a shared bath together and have the tattoo apprentice wash them. If the tub is not large enough for all of them, they would go one by one after the tattoo is finished but, the water is still shared cause it's never changed...... America had bad procedures like no gloves, reusing ink, improper sterilization, and needles. Japan had all that to but I guess it all combined with the drinking and drugs set it over the top.
I think this thread is getting hijacked though.
