Mike and Richard as everyone has already said are the best at panthers hands down. Richard can do literally any animal though, with no reference other than his brain, and not use a stencil either.. it's retarded..
this is an in progress shot of my mike wilson panther (also seen in the back piece thread)

About my tattoo experiences with Nick Colella (got two pieces of Dietzel flash) and Ron Henry Wells (snake and rose) this weekend, I would have to say that it was much like OaktownFunk's. Being a part of the convention and seeing all those tattooers and good people visiting the booths while getting tattooed was awesome. I'd say it was a great first time at the SFO convention, but I wish I would have stayed longer. Also, It was very rewarding, finally getting a Wells tattoo; I've wanted one since I first saw his work a few years ago.
Thanks for the amazing tattoos, fellas.

Thanks guys! I actually can't believe how quickly I've been able to get it squared away (although to be honest my bank account is seriously wrecked at the moment). Looking forward to February now.

Here is a nice Higgs tattoo I found recently. It was tattooed by him, not someone else tattooing his flash.

I had our wedding date engraved inside my ring. Recently, I got a new ring just because I thought the old was outdated and liked some of the new stuff I was seeing. I ended getting a tungsten something or other and it cant be engraved. It was funny to my wife and I because we both relied on that ring to remind us what year we were married. We were actually celebrating our 5th anniversary when part way through the evening we looked at the ring and realized it was our 6th. Oops.
So after reading this thread, maybe I will get the date tattooed on my finger, under my ring.

I think we're all (tattooers, that is) standing on the shoulders of giants. I've often thought about putting that on my business card.
I sort of agree with your point but any 'fame' that's bought or achieved through brown-nosing will be short lived. The guys who stick to concentrating on doing the best work they can, regardless of any fame or notion of celebrity are the ones who have the respect of their peers.
Fame is pretty easy to achieve, like you said, you just show up in the right places, shake everyones hand and make sure you get your photo taken.
Gaining the respect of your peers is another matter entirely. That takes hard work, effort, some intelligence and stamina over years or decades.
I know which one I'd rather have, although I did just spend a hell of a lot of time speaking with some heavy-hitting tattooers this weekend but maybe that's different at a convention. At least I hope so.
I think there's still plenty of blood sweat and tears in tattooing, it's just outweighed by the fame hungry party-tatters, starfuckers and endless bloggers.
I guess the only thing I disagree with and I may be opening a huge can of worms I'd rather not be involved with but, I wouldn't lump Picasso with 20th century shitty conceptual art. Though I have no desire to discuss "what is Art". Pollack made the mental leap that your brush didn't have to touch the canvas. Much like Zulueta and Hardy made the leap that a tattoo design didn't have to be a recognisable object. What happened after that is the problem, not what those guys did.
At the age of 14 Picasso could draw and paint like the old masters, Rubens included. The advent of photography meant that artists were no longer commissioned to create realistic likenesses, so they worked on creating more expressive or abstract art. Personal taste or preference aside, Picasso (and other modern artists, particularly cubists and impressionists) changed the way the rest of us perceive the world, wether we like it or not.
A Sailor Jerry (or Coleman) style pinup works much the same as a Picasso line drawing: there is perfectly the right amount of lines and detail. If you add more, you spoil it but if you take even a single line away, it doesn't make sense. One of the goals of cubism is to reduce the real world into the simplest geometric shapes and sometimes to show more than one dimension or time at once. Traditional tattooing is good at that too, I think.
I'm not a fan of the look of Picasso's more abstract stuff, but I love that he existed and changed the way we could view the world. I think that most contemporary Modern Art, certainly since the 1960's is total shit.
Luckily, Art (with a capital A) becoming conceptual pushed painting back into to fulfilling it's role as a craft, which allowed 'low-brow' or counter-cultural, craft based art (like Crumb, Williams and Greg Irons) to exist. And for that, I'm surely grateful.
But I certainly agree, 100% with the statement that there is no substitute for hard work.

Everyone's different. And it's got nothing to do with toughness. Where your nerve endings are most sensitive is where you're going to feel it most. Other things to take into account are how you are feeling that day. If your body is putting up with anything else, that is energy it doesn't have to dedicate to putting up with the tattoo process. Things like being hungover, having slept bad the night before, no food in your system, being sick or fighting off a cold, other infections.... These are all things that can make it feel worse. Not to mention how the tattooer tattoos, and weather or not you even feel like getting tattooed that day.
People talk about the ribs being crazy painful, but I have this group of tiny college soccer team girls that get rib shit. All big, script, pictures,... You name it. They have no problems at all. Soccer girls and snipers are the best for that shit. People who can accomplish a goal under duress make the best clients. They are able to not even see it as discomfort.
BUT I also tattoo big burly dudes who get all stressed and titchy over outer arm tattoos. You can see them just in agony. It's all different.
I was told that the inner bicep was hell. That's why everyone in the 90's who was getting tribal armbands would leave that are blank and have it not connect. I waited forever to do that spot. Come to find out it was the easiest shit for me to deal with. Possibly one of the two tattoos I could have fallen asleep getting.
My legs on the other hand? FUck. In normal places on my leg where normal ass people get normal ass butterflies and shit... FUCK shit is ridiculous. Hurts my soul. Getting my ankes tattooed makes me feel like a girl broke up with me in 8th grade.
