FRED CORBIN interview part one of three.

You know how when you were a kid there was always that guy a few years older who was just beginning to grow a mustache and had the sweetest feathered hair? He always had a cute girl hanging around, and had the ten speed with the handle bars flipped up? Remember how he could ride wheelies forever on that thing, up and down the block, never missing a beat, looking so cool with his feathered hair blowing in the wind? Remember how you just hoped when you were older that you could maybe be half as co

Marlboro Man: an interview with an old school tattooer

Shotsie Gorman First North American Serial Rights 579 word Copyright 2010 Shotsie Gorman MARLBORO MAN An interview with an old school Tattooer Chunks of gold comprised his monogram ring. Dazzling gold surrounded his wrist in a pile of watchband and bracelets. Birdman or a day in the life of a NJ tattooist in 1978

BIRDMAN Or a day in the life of a tattooist in 1978 At 4pm the sun was shinning nearly dead even into the window of the small tattoo shop on Kennedy Boulevard speaking of dead it was located just opposite the car rental that rented the white van to the first unsuccessful bombers of the World Trade Towers. Union City, NJ was not exactly exotic like Bombay nor was it cool like NYC for that matter it didn’t even seem like New Jersey it was more like little Cuba. Run by a soon to be convicted for

San Diego

Over the holidays I ventured to a town in North County San Diego called Encinitas where I grew up to spend a week with my family as many of them still live throughout San Diego. The goal was to eat lots of good Southern California mexican food and bring it back to all the LST since the two other most popular topics on our tattoo forum other than tattoos are travel and food! I love Northern California but Southern California will always hold my heart for mexican food with the exception of actua

Pay me or fight me.....Sailor Bill Killingsworth.....

for a few years now Scott Sterling and i have been taking these roadtrips to visit older tattooers, and friends...we both have a thing about tattoo history especially the word of mouth stories so we go see people and ask for the real skinny....Erik Inksmith said we kept him up until 4am wondering about some of the questions we had asked him the day before. Anyway Scott Sterling and I decided after a few failed attempts previous years to go down and visit Mike Wilson, Angelo ,and Erik and Bev In

Values

I've been thinking a lot about values and why people choose to act the way they do. My tentative conclusion is that a lot of humanity doesn't undergo much conscious self-reflection (which leads to accountability if you're being honest with yourself and have a generally positive nature) and subsequently falls pray to suffering the same missteps over and over again. I'm hoping it's this and not that more people are mal-spirited than I already believe them to be. Anyways I realized that without

Nick Colella Interview Part 1 of 2

I met Nick Colella in Salt Lake City at a convention. He is childhood friends with Maya, who was our shop helper at that time. Meeting him was like meeting an old friend. We have spent time in each others towns, we have traveled to Sweden together, his wife even wrecked my car (gotta rub it in when I can.) Nick's tattooing style is traditional, dynamic, solid and distinct. I appreciate that he does not show boat in his work, it gets straight to the point. He works at Chicago tattoo, which was Cl

Jeremy Lux and The Three Questions

So this is my fourth blog on Last Sparrow Tattoo on my reoccurring topic of a guest and The Three Questions so figured I'd bring to you a friend of both Scott and mines....Jeremy Lux. I met Jeremy sometime ago through mutual friends as we both ran in the same circles at the same shows. I don't recall the exact time we met but I do know that he is one of the guys that I have always seen dancing and going for the front often times singing along at many shows. His energy is insane when you see he c

ramblings & fuzzy feelings

We've had a couple guests here this month and it's been great. We've had a lot of fun so far, especially since Myles (Karr - who is also on this site) is here in Toronto now. We met him last year in Brighton, then shared a booth in Montreal, and thus, a loving partnership was formed. Haha! The shop got a beautiful new "tattoos" sign up on the facade and we've seen a small increase in our walk ins. I think it will take time to see a big effect from the sign going up, because it will mostly

Barbershops and tattoos

When I was out in CA I snuck around behind Gaspare’s back.. but I knew I was going to since I’d been wanting to check out Hawleywood’s for a couple years. Dickies put up this video with the shop’s founder, Donnie. (I went to Jimmy in Long Beach who was super nice.) Best damn haircut I ever had. I didn’t have a PBR but I did pee with the door open…but that’s only because I didn’t realize the bathroom had a door.
