Greetings all!

Might as well use this opportunity to also ask the questions I joined this forum to ask; hopefully at least some of them are answerable.

I'm a college student out of state at the moment but will be back over winter break. I'm planning to get a tattoo with a close friend (if not closest friend) from high school while I'm back. The tattoo is nothing fancy so I'm not particularly looking for some extremely talented artist but I do know quality varies and this being my first tattoo I don't wanna sacrifice quality (link to design we're doing that she drew in white but we're not planning white for the real thing: https://imgur.com/a/Yjbb0P6). So my questions (and if you can only answer one or two please still do so) are:

1) Given the simple design, does the artist still matter so much that I'd want to contact several of them in advance to figure out which is the best for this design? I suppose it would also be helpful to say I'll be not far outside Boston so if that helps you think of a place/artist you'd recommend I'm all ears.

2) Since it is a bit of a custom design, would it require a separate in-person consultation? For that matter, how many visits to a place would be necessary to get it done? Could all this be set up via email or a phone call and then only the trip to get it done is necessary? A walk-in sounds like it's probably a recipe for lower quality (and given that it’s two people also might be harder to accommodate) but if it's possible without losing quality I'd consider it. I also assume all these vary place by place, but again any recommendations I'll look into.

3) Is it reasonable to expect this to be all done over break? I see plenty of stuff about appointments being scheduled weeks or months in advance but since this is such a simple and quick design would it take as long? Also I assume this would vary place by place too - what places can work with this timeframe? I can email and phone from out of state now but if it'd take multiple in-person visits and those visits would have to occur over a period longer than a month it wouldn't work.

Thanks guys!

1) any descent artist could do that

2) a "walk in" does not mean "lower quality" by any means

3) the entire process to do that tiny tattoo would take 10 minutes

and lastly,I would not recommend an all white tattoo,it will fade away to mostly nothing if it doesn't turn brownish

I guess my bigger question is this: should I bother getting a specific appointment, and if so what does that look like? Would a walk-in pose any kind of problem? And quality is naturally on my mind so I'm making sure at the very least I choose a highly-respected shop (of which there are numerous in the immediate Boston area).

You're probably not going to get a specific appointment for something so small. Inking time will be less than 1 minute. Total time in front of the tattooist will probably be less than 10 minutes. Be prepared to pay a shop minimum (which will vary depending on which shop in Boston, but probably $75-100).

I'm not familiar with the shops there, but the pitfall is that it takes almost nothing to screw up very simple design like this, so you don't want to end up in the hands of some newbie apprentice or an experienced person who isn't really invested or interested in helping you out. It's going to be a balancing act.

2nd on @Dan's comment regarding the white ink choice

One more question - how easy are other colors to work with? Haven't talked to my friend much about her color preferences but she might more prefer to do something not as visible as black (though she's said she's happy to do black too - haven't quite gotten a gauge on her precise preferences which I'll ask her about). Colors like pastel blue fade more easily as I understand it but she's said things in the past about fading being fine since it's less commitment. Of course, if it'd take a decent amount of effort to find an artist to do that then it's not worth it but I'm curious enough that I'll ask.

Maybe she should just use a Sharpe. That will fade quickly and there is no long term commitment.

My advice is to wait until you and your friend are ready to commit to a tattoo. Otherwise you're going to wind up with a squiggly line on your arm, in a very visible spot, wondering what the hell you were thinking.

You know that you don't just go in and laser them off like on TV, right? It's painful, expensive, multiple sessions and will likely leave something you can still see on the skin.

She just told me outright "I want black" so that clarifies that. I think her uncertainty before (which I hadn't talked to her about for a few months) was due to her considering law but she's majoring in social work so she isn't worried about visibility/commitment anymore. That they for all practical purposes aren't removable is why we were making sure it was something that'd haunt us in a few years.

    • Hello, So I'm new here and reddit is just awful people so, I wanted advice. So for some reason, I allowed a tattoo be blasted down my arm. My fault I know. I'm very fit and complimented all the time how tone my arms are. So, I got a sun over a lotus tattoo. Everyone loves it. But for some bizzare reason, I can not look at myself in the mirror FOR 5 MONTHS with this tattoo. I have other tattoos, this being the 1st big and really visible tattoo. I feel like I have body dysmorphia or some shit. Its so weird. My friend is actually going to my tattoo guy BECAUSE of my tattoo. So, I don't know if anyone else has gone thru this? The tattoo looks weird to me. Not anyone else. I didn't want flowers and leaves because flowers remind me of funeral homes. I'm very yoga, my tattoos are suns, moons, lotuses. Zen shit. But I guess because I said I would never tattoo my upper arm and then tattooed my upper arm, I'm like omg what have I done?! Everyone loves this tattoo. My mother in law says it should be on stained glass and my own mom thinks it's so beautiful. There is not 1 shaky line. Not 1 flaw within this tattoo. He made the sun rays where they wrap around and up my shoulder. And it's just so jarring to me to look at. I don't get it.. or maybe just Cause I'm an idiot. It's not a broken up flow. Guy at the gas station covered in tattoos even loves it. Lol. I can't look at it. It's so weird. Just wondering what the hell is going on?! I've got other tattoos planned out, I love tattoos. I didn't want such a big tattoo and it turned out that way. I will say this, I have multiple sclerosis and went thru a relapse and I'm not sure if it messed with my brain somewhat?!?! Cause I was fine before that. I do have severe anxiety. But it was also winter when I got the tattoo. And now because it's on such display I'm questioning my design and its not at all a sleeve, its actually everyone seriously loves it. Except me. My tattoo guy drew the sun rays on me and i loved it. Then i pivked it apart. The rays r too wide, and too big and this and that. My tattoo guy is phenomenal...busts out the measuring tape and not a crooked line in any of hos work. Its just not ur typical flow of a tattoo. Like flowers and leaves flow. I wanted something different. Something that goes with my style and like i said, flowers like roses and stuff, noone buys me flowers because i hate flowers and im sorry to the flower people. Its just they remind me of funeral homes and all that. This was a custom tattoo by my tattoo artist that knows my style, and not his typical traditional style and he works with me like im a glass doll...lol. he free handed my sun and he is not cheap. And he does phenomenal work. So, i didnt cheap out. So why cant i look at I t? I feel like i ruined my arm i guess and my image. My husband says I upgraded...lol. in fact, he loves me in tattoos and my kids love it. So wtf is wrong with me? Has anyone ever experienced this? Sorry for the long post. It's should be noted, I saod out loud before getting the tattoo...mthos is not a good idea to put this here but I did it anyway. I think I didn't listen to my intuition and because I already know I'm a complete basket case, I should've listened to myself. Removal is not an option, I wint do that....plus, my tattoo guy says his tattoos dont come off...lol.  I got a forearm tattoo a month ago and I'm completely fine with it.
    • Good luck. Job hunting sucks. I got laid off from a company after 20 years and it took six months to find a job. I was in the dreaded “middle” management role at an IT company. A little over two years later my new company was  bought out and they did a “restructuring” which means the people doing the work get fired so the people sitting on their fat asses get fatter.  I couldn’t find what I really wanted so I just retired. Might be a good time to think about switching fields.
