Do not Support this convention please. Wrong vibe for tattooing See my comments on Shotsies Blog
-
Shotsie, if you looked into what this convention at blue lake is really all about, I would hope that you wouldn't support it. I have total respect for your participation in tattooing and you've been on my radar since the beginning. I even own a copy of Tattoo Advocate that you signed for Phil Sparrow.
I've been tattooing here in Humblodt County for over 15 years (longest standing artist in the area). I can't speak for the artists or the people of our county, but we are in remote island like culture with a healthy disdain for mainstream America. None of the veteran Humboldt County artists are supporting this convention. I personally can't stand the fact that one of the local Casino's is using their wealth culled from "winners", to be the loudest voice in local tattooing, and in a small area like this "local" means a lot. In my opinion, if you're working for the Casino, you are working against everything cool about tattooing. Our area has Stellar tattooers who have worked and traveled around the world to bring back what is good and right about tattooing to little old Humboldt County. We don't need the Casino and we don't need anymore artists in Humblodt. I've invested most of my Adult life in this community, (emphasis on community), I hate to see things go in the direction of dumb-dumb strip-mall, casino loving America, but with events like this and outsiders thinking they've got something "unique" to bring here, we slip closer and closer to the bland, retread, consumer based moronic ideology one finds so prevalent outside the Redwood Curtain. I urge you and anyone else considering this show to pause for a moment and think about why you got involved with tattooing. I doubt working for Casinos is what you had in mind. Keep Tattooing Cool. Respectfully, Dean Schubert

Lovin that. My wife also got her first tattoo from Joshua Golden At Lyle's. Joshua is now living up here in the Hills of Humboldt County. He's retired from tattooing, but I hear he's making some awesome goat cheese.

Well Done. If there are any newer tattooers watching, I think this interview might help them understand what tattooing today is really all about. All kinds of little truth nuggets in this particular conversation. Look forward too more interviews.

When Salma and Penelope did that western together.........My wife got sick of my humor after a while.

a couple of years ago I was down in Hollywood walking past this old-timey Barber shop Like this. At the time I hadn't cut my hair in 3 months and my beard was down to my chest. I made eye contact with one of the barbers as I was walking. I felt like it was 1969, and I was the forward thinking freak and the barber was thinking get in here and clean up that mess son. I guess he didn't get the memo. That rockabilly thing is so 90's bro. It's all dirtball psychedelic biker now. Oh well. It was a pretty funny nano second.

Over the years , Hunter S. has been the subject of most literary tattoo's I've made. However its usually Ralph Steadman's art rather than Hunter's words. I've done a lot of writing, although when I picked up the tattoo machines, my reading really fell off.

I agree with hambone who agrees with Filip. I've been working on this for almost twenty years and I go through the same waves. Tomorrow's always a new day. But I think these feelings are true of all professions. The world isn't really set up to coddle tattooers into a comfortable life. Wait till you're in your forties and everyone you grew up with is making more money and they have pensions for when they retire in twenty or less years. Its a constant battle to stay fired up. I still feel its worth it. Another thing to look forward to... a profession that will continue to get more crowded with ultra talented hungry youthful tattooers. gotta stay focused on what excites you about the profession and pursue it all the way.

Sounds like a blast. The museums are also incredible as a highbrow side note. I see you enjoyed some vegan food there. I always thought of Chicago as the states' most masculine city. Number one in meat!

I forgot to mention I've been tattooed by Mr. Mike Godfrey and Horishow as well. The Boy was the son of someone who was guesting at the shop I was working at. My fave # is 11 and he was 11 so I had him tattoo an 11 on Me. My wife tattooed the #31 on me for my 31st birthday. That was her first and last tattoo done 12 years ago! I also liked all the spousal tatts showing up on the lists.

The fun of it is in the collecting! I feel ya on the finite space. That's why I like Oliver Peck's tiny tats. There's always room for more. I've been tattooed by all my early heroes so now its just finishing up what I've started then I'll collect tiny tats from people I meet along the way in the next forty years.

Another great thing about Spotlight. Hand painted flash on the walls. Goldfields, Dave Gibson's Deluxe, and Spotlight are three shops I've been in where all the flash was actually painted rather than reproduced. It makes for an impressive look that's seldom seen . Or maybe I'm not getting around enough.

got to spend some time down there when Juan was working there. That shop reminds me of what shops used to look like (although it seems to be trending back to that) I don't smoke but I love it that they smoke in there. Something about green soap and cigs. that smells just right. Bob is the real deal.

Look forward to it. Have some old tat books myself that I'd like to review for members on the site. I'm with ya on being in the "90's" now . skipped myspace just got on facebook and I don't carry a cell phone unless I'm riding. Figured might as well join the rest of the world. Now I have to get an i phone or something so I can fully take advantage of all this tech stuff. Looking forward to gettn' down with some folks that can't get enough of this stuff. Dean Schubert

I want to travel to Milwaukee to get a tattoo! I've collected some sizable tattoos while traveling . Its great fun and adds a sense of adventure to the whole process of collecting work. And you are getting work from the coolest shop in one of my favorite places.
