2) Get tattooed by everyone there, starting with Richard Stell (who's there for a few more days) and then by Aaron Coleman, Jay Cavna and Mando Rascon.
3) Soak up every moment of your experiences there.

First off- congrats on your decision to get tattooed! It's a big personal step and I'm glad you've decided to bring the entire internet full of strangers into that decision-making process!
I was a little upset when you suggested we weren't living up to our potential. Frankly, it reminded me of the many times I'd heard that statement from parents, teachers, and employers. But I'm a lemonade from lemons kinda fella, so I decided to take your statement as a challenge and present you with my concept of your tattoo idea. I've spent sometime playing Draw Something (up to my first color pack!), so I have some experience with bring people's words into artistic reality. So here it is- don't worry about paying me, it's about paying it forward :D

Why would we even try? I will let this guy and his tattooer figure it out and let this thread die.

i think i've got it! how about... a banner... with the word "REJOICE"... wrapping around a sun! sounds like you already know what you want and it would make a fine tattoo. hopefully your artist can make the sun look like a sun.

Here's some advice - Don't get pissy when you don't get the answers you want.

You've now added more input. Great, you don't want a cross. You don't want any of the traditional animals suggested. You do want a banner wrapped around something. You've now added another possible element: a sun. All these are ideas you had already, right (even though you didn't give us all of them at first). How about you let your artist know these exact ideas? I bet you he/she can draw a really nice banner wrapped around a sun that has colours and other elements that make it very clear that it's a sun.
Just because you don't like the ideas/suggestions you were given (at least, the reasonable ones. It is indeed taking lots of restrain not to just take the piss out of you), doesn't make them any less valid. We don't know what you have in mind. We can't see where you want this done, how big, or what else may be in the way (other tattoos, huge moles, horrendous car-crash scars, etc), or see what it looks like once laid out on you. All these things affect what you get. Not to mention, no one here is going to draw it for you. One person will. Perhaps you should consult with him/her. Well, lookie here, it just so happens you have a consultation scheduled with the artist. That'll come in handy.

if you want the word "Rejoice", a cross might fit well for the banner to wrap around.
it sounds like you've already selected an artists, since you have an appointment. i suggest you check out their portfolio and see what kind of things they like to do. the artist will have more fun with a piece they enjoy doing and hopefully it will optimize your experience and tattoo.

Joking aside, although your point is very valid, it kinda doesn't matter. In my experience foreign cultures (i.e. any not your own, except Maori) don't really get offended when someone gets a tattoo influenced by their culture. I'm not sure, but this idea of offending whole cultures seems to spring from the days of usenet or early forums where there was more typing than tattooing going on.
I encounter variations of this question all the time. My answer usually is "it doesn't matter" think about everything else in your life and it's cultural authenticity. Think about the language you speak, the food you eat, the clothes you wear etc, etc. unless you are part of a tribe or Japanese, there's a good chance you live a fairly multicultural life without realising it.
But yeah, I'd say Japanese tattooing is one of the cornerstones of tattoo culture. Yes there is such a thing. To me "tattoo culture" is more interesting and valid than "tattoo lifestyle" maybe I don't act, socialise, party, work, fuck, drink, ride transportation, dress or eat like others in this culture but they still accept me as a friend, peer or brother when we meet, for the first time, or the hundredth time, anywhere in the world.
That's not to say having a sleeve will give you access to a global network of friends but 'tattoo' is a thing in, and of itself. Your Japanese tattoo won't really be a Japanese tattoo, it will be a Japanese style tattoo hopefully executed with love, effort, craft, and respect for its origins. Which is more than can be said for much of our modern lives.
Also, traditional arts and crafts are dying out in their native countries around the world. It's often foreigner's interest that keeps them alive.
With that in mind, the idea of offending a culture that allows its traditions to die through adopting some of those traditions seems a little redundant to me.
After all is said and done, I hope you get a tattoo, for you, that makes you happy.

That first piece is killer, but her right hand and left arm looks a little bit strange to me. Maybe just the picture, or maybe just me... I don't know. The piece as a whole looks really bad-ass though!
