"He's done the one thing that I've said for years, please don't do this. It would really upset me if you did this."
If she really had been going on and on about it for years, and clearly has all kinds of weird overbearing mom issues, what choice did the poor guy have? He might not even like tattoos, either, but she practically dared him to do it. All healthy kids need to put some space between themselves and their parents at all different developmental milestones. Henry walked around with his hat on sideways for 6 months when he was 5 cause he heard Scott say that he hated it. Perfectly normal. Talking about your grown son's "lovely shoulder" and mourning the loss of control over his body? Creepy.

Couldn't find a thread that quite fit this topic so thought I would throw it up here for discussion...
My last couple of experiences have been with walk-in-loving street shops that employ several great artists. At each shop, I've gone in with the hope of being tattooed by a particular artist, but I've ended up being tattooed by someone different than I had originally gone into the shop to see. In both instances, I went to the shop and looked through the flash while trying to get a "feel" for the shop and looking at portfolios and seeing who I think might be most adept at doing the sort of tattoo I want. While there, I witnessed these two artists (both at different shops, mind you) acting like complete jackasses and generally giving me a really uncool vibe. I ended up going with a different artist, in each case a highly competent and great tattooer but one whose portfolio and style I liked ever so slightly less just because I didn't want to get a (maybe) slightly better tattoo but have a bad experience that I will remember that tattoo by.
Thus, do you think personality of a tattooer matters? If someone has a reputation as an impeccable artist but a total asshole (not just "gruff" or whatever, like that story about Scott going to Bob Roberts' shop and being bounced right the fuck out, but just an overall douche) would you want work done by them? If you're straight edge would you get tattooed by a great artist who also happens to be a drunk or drug user (not sure how often these categories overlap, but, hey!)? Does the final product outweigh the experience of getting the tattoo put on? Any other factors you consider outside of the finished product when choosing a tattooer?

i once showed my mother a new tattoo i had gotten, i was about 23 years old, she took a look at it, started crying and told me i was ugly. this article resonates deeply with me. the woman who wrote the article is a complete fucking moron.

Edited for emphasis, but, this. I'm not trying to be a prick about it but if you have to ask the advice of relative strangers on what to do, well, you probably aren't ready to have your forearms tattooed.

I have some pretty bad ones I will never mess with ,because of association. one of them is by the late Eric Hogan. he was by no means a great friend , more like someone I knew, But I will always remember him, His mother would probably appreciate this. During these times that seem sometimes like a "cool" race, we need to remember the whys and hows people have always gotten tattooed. As a tattooer/ist we ,especially street shops, face it everyday. those silly reasons mean something to those not in the know. your Moms love, your children's love, you went somewhere, you freed yourself, don't forget. They aren't just cool. Last evening I put stick figures holding balloons on a woman's foot, I tried to put them on with all the professionalism that i could. If those don't meet anyone's ideas about what good art is or what a cool tattoo is,it doesn't matter. she talked about how she went to a different shop and they were rude about it. I did a good job, she was happy, I got to eat dinner doing something I want to do,not something i have to do, Im not cleaning toilets ,Im not a Walmart greeter. not that good hard work isn't respectful , Its that I'm lucky and hopeful today. And yes I will try and give them the best stick figures they need. I do love me some "regular people".

Less anchors/diamonds on faces. More daggers/skulls/roses etc on forearms.

This from the country where you get fined if you don't buy cable t.v. Biggest bunch of Nanny staters on planet Earth. Thank God America rebelled 250 years ago or it'd be a 10 quid fine for jerking off without wearing a helmet.
