I've been meaning to take account of all my books. This was as good an excuse as anytime to figure it out. I think this covers it, but it's likely I have a couple more hiding somewhere. Mostly Japanese stuff (big surprise, right?). Some are quality. Some are academic. A couple are meh. Mostly good though. I think anyways, but I need to fill in some gaps that should be a part of any collection.

Stop in Arizona (Mesa, which is a suburb of Phoenix) at Immaculate Tattoo. It's an amazing shop.

Petri Aspvik got a reaction from Mark Bee in College course on history of tattooing
I just wrote and essay about tattooing ("Turning point of tattoo art in the 1970's". Direct translation from finnish) for my art history studies in University. It is a topic that has been gaining "popularity" in recent years, so I think this type of thing (lectures etc) will be happening more and more in the future.

Petri Aspvik got a reaction from CultExciter in FOR SALE: Greg Irons - You call this art & Grime - Two Year autopsy
Greg's books is in prefect condition. The prices range from 350-500$ in the internet, but willing to sell a lot cheaper. Make an offer.
Grimes book is read few times over, has little signs of use in the hardcover, in the edges, all the pages are pretty much new. This I can sell for 120$.
I can post pics if needed.

Petri Aspvik got a reaction from rozone in Tattoo silhouette and negative space
Yeah, the Stuart leg sleeves are amazing. I want to strive to that outlook myself. This one by Scott Harrison is bad ass also. I dont really like Scott's stuff that much personally, but this owns! This tattoo and the one by Stuart look like Lungfish Feral Hymns album sounds. Images to sounds
And btw. About the use of space around tattoos. Check out the Robert Ryan interview in TAM, he talks about that in there.

Petri Aspvik got a reaction from MadeIndelible in Question for customers! Portfolios...
Hmmm. Well, less is more. I much rather would want to see a portfolio where there is like 20 tattoos with maybe even a brief description about what they really want to do. I mean, why not? If there is a eagle and the artist wants to do eagles that are more like flash from the 1930, as the one he maybe has in his portfolio, and not so much from the 1970's, then write it there. I dont know if artists do this, but there are no rules. Put photographs in your portfolio of stuff you are drawn to. Fucking poems or shit.
And what RockelMan said is a great advice. Its boring to see 300 pics of tattoo work and have no sense of reason in them

Petri Aspvik reacted to irezumi in tattoo tux
I didn't really work with him as an artist or front desk; He let me tattoo myself there a few times and let me hang around whenever I wanted and answered any question I had. I was at his shop as much as possible between the years of 1990 to 2000. I feel lucky to have been in that situation because he was extremely gruff to just about everybody, especially other tattooers. Had a big opportunity not fallen into my lap halfway across the country I believe that would've been my first 'job'. There were only 2 people in that whole time that he set up machines for and the other person was my roommate at the time.
There's no right/wrong 'what I should've done/chosen to do' at that time just decisions made and where they take you. I don't regret moving away from Baltimore at a turning point like that but sometimes I do wish I had been able to spend more time there at his shop at a crucial time like that before he passed away. I still talk to his widow fairly frequently and she tells me that she knows he would be proud of me now. I plan to see her again when I go to Bmore for a guest spot this summer, and have set up a visit with Nick and Thom as well during that same trip.
Nick also had a big hand in showing Tux the ropes as did Thom and Elio. I recommend getting some artwork from Nick; he's a super rad guy and an amazing artist.

There's a certain not-to-be-named somebody here that has some great photos of Tux & Thom recently purchased that I've never seen before; I'll let them post them if he/she wants to after that person sees this thread.

One of the somewhat little-known people in Bmore worth knowing about is Tattoo Charlie Geizer
Charlie Geizer
Although his shop has changed hands and is no longer part of the Geizer family the shop is still there (in the red light district, of course)and worth a visit if the old flash is still up. My favorite part of Charlie's shop is the painted screens he had done. Screen painting, an old Baltimore folk art tradition, has themes that are usually quaint country scenes and whatnot but Charlie's screens are HUGE and are Bmore landmarks including 2 (3?) huge clipper ships. They're on the second floor so it's really difficult to get pictures of them.
Bunny, you need to get someone to let you go into the offices across the way from them and explain how unique, special and part of Baltimore history they are so you can photograph them.
edit; for the sake of a rough idea of what I'm talking about I used google street view. Not as good as actual photos but you get the idea. I also feel compelled to give context of where it's located.
For a short period of time as a young lad I worked at what used to be a carry-out greasy spoon where that Subway is now. Memories.

Petri Aspvik got a reaction from CultExciter in Book thread
Yeah, it wasn't me man :P. I'm big on biographies and shit like that. Currently Im reading Blood in the Cage: Mixed Martial Arts, Pat Miletich, and the Furious Rise of the UFC, because I love stuff like this!
Talking about Biographies, I have read Education of a Felon: A Memoir by Edward Bunker like six times. Its fucking amazing.
My all time favorite books are (besides Education) perhaps
Neil Gaiman - American Gods (It is just magical, in all sense of the word, magic.)
Noah Levine - Dharma Punx (It helped me)
Carl Sagan - The Demon Haunted World: Science as a candle in the dark (cleared the cobwebs)
Richard Matheson - I am legend and Cormac McCarthy - The Road (both dense, close as skin)
Hmmmm. Shit, cant remember more. Oh! Marilyn Manson - The Long hard road out of Hell. Hail Satan.
I really havent read any real classic classics. They bore me. For example, Jack Kerouac On the Road. Well, Ithink Henry Rollins said it best.
“Kerouac, what a pussy,”
:D
