  1. I personally use the terms tatts' date=' tatted up, inked, inked up, get your ink game up, get your tatt game up, and have been known to refer to a machine as a gun, even after having recently being informed that tattooists find it offensive. I have ADD and borderline personality disorder, and sometimes feel little regard for what others find offensive. Then again, I wouldn't have all this ink if I were concerned with offending others.....[/quote']

Instead of looking at it like how other ppl view you, look at it like how YOU view YOU. It's clear in reading just a couple of your posts that you want to be 'in the know' in regards to tattooing. These terms don't just make ppl cringe, they make the craft/profession of tattooing cringe. If you don't respect others that's cool, but by reading this thread in particular you're being given an opportunity to respect yourself and tattooing, and everyone would be better for it.

  2. I think I'd build around what I had, a cover up will look bad, and based on the 3 tattoos I see, I'd consider asking if a different artist could tattoo my remaining money out, or maybe they could write you a check to get at least the star and the the date some laser treatment.

You're already stuck, you'd be foolish to let her tattoo you again.

  3. Back in the 90's "Tattoo Goo" was the new magic foo-foo lotion everyone was hawking at the conventions. 20 years later' date=' it's still out there (at WalMart of all places) so I suppose it isn't a bad thing. Last year a new-to-me artist all but demanded that I use Aquaphor because "petroleum based lotions aren't good." Okay, I bought a jar. And I read the label. Aquaphor is 40% petrolatum. Then I read the label on a jar of Vasoline. 100% petrolatum. P.T. Barnum was no fool ...[/quote']

I've used Aquafor for all but one of mine and the all healed(completely) in roughly 3 weeks, I used tattoo goo's healing lotion on my anchor and it noticeably not as bright as the other tattoos(same artist for all). Tattoo goo is not for me. Aquafor and gold dial soap.

  4. @ian everyone has already given you due props' date=' but thanks for this thread! I think all of us (even those who do a good job of being nice) need reminders to be kind and decent. It's very easy to slip into close-mindedness and a "holier-than-thou" perspective. To be honest, I think when people get defensive and *slightly* hostile is when "newbies" bite back or criticize our efforts to help. I wish you smooth sailing for your divorce. That can never be an easy thing to go through...[/quote']

Everything you said is spot on.

Personally I'm ok with newbs biting back a little, IMO that's the only way new ideas and new ground are ever broken in. I'm not cool with newbs trying to dictate etc etc but I'm also not a huge fan of 'this is it, your idea is impossible or stupid' etc.

just because that's the way it is, does not mean that's the way it has to be.. Something's yes, everything, no.

    Things change, things evolve.

  5. I Have two sets of tickets for this years Canadian Grand Prix, they are fantastic seats. If any LST member is interested I will end my ebay auction and cut you a great deal...! I have these tickets and just can't go!

I know this is unusual subject here but LST is global. Also if this thread is a 'No-No' please feel free to take it down.

  6. Time = Money' date=' right? So don't ask about the hours needed to complete a tattoo because you are basically asking how much it cost. Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk[/quote']

Agree to some extent, I'm sure there will be inquiries to time in relation to the OP's pieces in question because someone said they can be done right in 5-6 hours, which IMO is not realistic at all.

Time is also important in terms of traveling for a tattoo, for instance someone said 20+ hours as a ball park, that may tell someone they need to plan on more then one trip/flight, another person might think they can squeeze it in, in one trip.

With so many factors going into pricing, time is only part of that equation and my experience is a lot of artists charge by the piece, regardless off the time involved. Again I think 'time' or 'hours' involved is so insignificant in terms of price, far more relevant to travel and pain tolerance.

I've no issue with the no $$ talk in terms of dollar amount but as a site dedicated to getting great tattoos I believe removing the taboo of explaining pricing is a good step.

In particular ppl new to tattoos need to understand the factors that go in to pricing so they can feel confident.

  7. Somehow we manage to have dozens of threads per month where we discuss a lot of positive topics' date=' share images of new tattoos and general shoot the shit. If the 'party line' on LST were that the only acceptable answer to any tattoo-related question is to 'ask your tattooer' then we wouldn't have the thriving discussion forum that we do. We'd have a bunch of really short threads which all culminated in people saying 'ask your tattooer'. Err.. Except we don't. A guideline here on LST is that we don't talk about money. I'm guessing this guy is looking for a ballpark figure of hours for his half-sleeve so that he can figure out how much he needs to save or whatever. Fine. No one is talking about hanging, drawing and quartering him, but let's be clear: He'd be better off going to his tattooer and being up front rather than asking a 'how long is a piece of string' question. Because Graeme was actually giving him very good advice when he said he is not going to learn anything useful here. All he'll learn is how quickly a specific tattooer worked on that tattoo. It won't even tell him whether that tattooer would be slower on a different client, doing a different tattoo, in a different frame of mind. Now, I do also detect a slightly testy tone to Graeme's post. But frankly he probably said what a lot of us were thinking. We've had a rash of posts on LST lately which are, frankly, lowest common denominator posts. It's stuff that people should be walking into their tattoo shop and asking about. I don't see a particular reason why any regulars on LST are obligated to worry if people get 'bad advice' when they are fobbed off and end up asking elsewhere. I don't feel any particular pressure to provide 'guesstimates' to anyone, for example... I mean... really? Finally, there's something more than a little ironic about the fact that you're pleading for Graeme to 'help out' and not be a 'fucking asshole' while at the same time you manage to squeeze into your post that he is a cock sucker, a dick and a fucking asshole, and to 'stfu'. For what it's worth, Graeme adds a hell of a lot more value to this forum with his posts that yours, so perhaps you're the one who should consider putting a sock in it.[/quote']

The point is I see so many posts and hear ppl say 'oh these plains skins say the darnedest things' and the like, well they say and think what they do because they try and gather information about tattoos, etiquette etc from ppl who are experienced so they don't look like fools when they walk in a professional shop and ask a general question, good tattooers are busy and aren't going to stop tattooing to answer such, I've seen it first hand, so as a site dedicated to good tattoos it lends that we should be informing or pointing in the right direction. If 'this is a question for your tattooer' is more productive then sharing exp.. Well..

  8. Pointless question.
Why is it helpful? Because if you're looking to estimate the cost of a tattoo you want to get it isn't in any way helpful because how long it took Luca Ortis to do that tattoo has absolutely no bearing on how long it would take Regino Gonzales to do a similar tattoo. There's only so much useful information you can get from the internet' date=' at some point you need to physically walk into a shop and talk to actual people.[/quote']

You don't have to always be a cock sucker, everyone else here offered what info they could and explained why it may not be useful at all, what wrong with that? Instead of being a dick, try answering a question, or here's a thought, if it's really that pointless, just stfu.

I guess unless you're asking a question the only reply accepted 'ask your tattooer'.. Asking a tattooer is great, but as someone new to tattoos and such, if you just roll up in a shop or two and start asking artists 'how much for this?' And 'how long for that?' You're going to have a bad time, seen it first hand, tattooers wanna work with paying customers, not looky Lu's-

If we here @ LST aren't willing to provide these types of guesstimates, we should be so willing to talk shit when they get bad info elsewhere.

This place is supposed to be dedicated to good tattoos, not being a fucking asshole to anyone you can because they might know less then you. How about help out or shut the fuck up.

  9. What the fuck is this? What the fuck is a 'Tattoo Designer'? More importantly I had a look through their Instagram Instagram and I can see work regramed/reposted by Tattoodo from Chad Koeplinger Horiyoshi 3 Tim Hendricks Scott Sylvia Stewart Robson Etc' date=' Etc. (not sure how to tag names on here - help? mod?) I'm pretty sure none of these artists would be happy about their work being passed off and associated with this sort of thing. In the murky world of the internet this is going to be rife. Still really fucks me off, even more so after watching the FST: Shoulder of Giants film seeing the hard work, passion and love for the industry that these artists have spent years working toward and seeing people break it apart with diluted souless actions as these. It blows my mind that people are willing to pay $300 for a 'design' over the internet?! Makes my blood boil.[/quote']

I think Ami James is near the front of this thing(ownership wise), at least he's been promoting it on social media etc like he has some stake to it, which may be why some of those names are being associated with it.

The idea if wearing a stencil longer then the 10 seconds before I say 'looks good, let's do it' is interesting but I think it would lead to second thoughts for some(maybe a good idea, maybe not) and picking a design to death.

Like someone eluded to already, teaching ppl about choosing a proper artist is more important IMO, the way LST does.

  10. I guess I didn't phrase that right. Is is generally a no-no to take more than a glancing peek and someone's tattoo if you try to be clear it's an appreciation check and not a negative editorial? Would a look with a nod or smile be generally acceptable? I'd genuinely like to look but don't want to come off acting like an asshole - I don't have visible art to show I'm on the same page.

I generally glance at first, if it looks bad I just go on about my life and forget I saw a bad tattoo.. On the other hand, if it's good I get an eye full and he/she sees me looking I generally say 'hey that's a rad tattoo' and keep doing whatever I'm doing.

I think the main thing is space number 1, if your not invited closer then don't get closer and 2, just because we both have tattoos does not mean were friends and talk about your uncles heart condition. Just be respectful like you would expect and most everyone will be cool.

  11. So reading this thread' date=' it seems like responses run the gamut from being upset people stare to not caring. I have one small tattoo on my shoulder that doesn't garner stares and it's hidden at work but I'm working on a full back now that no one has seen, so this question is interesting to me. But on the flip side, sometimes I see tattoos that's I'd like to look at and not feel like I have to sneak a peek at. Why do we feel like it's wrong to do more than sneak a peek? Why would someone with a tattoo get upset to know that someone else is looking and could be genuinely interested in the art? Isn't a reason for getting a tattoo, at least in part, that it be seen? I know I'll get lots of dirty looks wearing a swim suit when the time comes, but I'd like to think I wouldn't get bent if people look more than a moment to check it out. Am I sadly mistaken?[/quote']

I think that the turn off is so many times the looks and comments are negative and ignorant that it gets a bit redundant. One the other side, when you do something like get visible tattoos, you have to know ppl are going to look.. Suck it up butter cup.

  12. Even in flea markets and thrift stores' date=' I find myself paying the asking price, since it's usually so low. I think I paid 5 dollars for two books and a pin the last time I went to a thrift store. I understand that people would haggle at those places though.[/quote']

Also depends on the thrift shop, at ours it's loosely organized and there's really no prices on on anything so we welcome it..

Tattoo shops and other businesses are not set up that way at all.

Generally I discuss the idea, the placement and ask for a ball park figure so I can be sure to have plenty of cash for a tip etc, didn't ask for a price on the last two though, they are kinda small so..

  13. Welcome to LST, my guess is with you wanting a tattoo with so much black it probably won't be too big of an issue to cover, the biggest thing will be finding a proper tattooer then consulting with him/her to give you the details you need.

In the mean time you should post up some pics of your tattoos, we dig looking at tattoos lol

  14. The wait for RG is 4 month and his price is 250/hr compared to Dan's one month wait and 180/hr. Is their skill difference that great that I should wait that much longer and pay that much more? Honestly' date=' I'm not sure; My artistic eye isn't strong. To me, Dan's art looks just as good. I'll try to contact Chris Garver tomorrow but I imagine he's booked for about a year since he's like a superstar.[/quote']

A lot of things factor into pricing from design, location of the shop, location of the tattoo and other factors.

Don't worry so much about the 'price per hour' so much as the art and artist, if the work is good and you can make a connection with the artist it will worth the money, you'll have a rad tattoo and a great memory.

This we don't talk about money, is fucking bullshit, I get not saying 'I paid X' but but people need to understand the factors of pricing, it's not all about the drawing and actual tattooing, folks need to know that certain areas of the body are more difficult to produce a rad tattoo and there for require more time/money.

  15. So I called and spoke to my dad and told him I only mentioned 1 tattoo-I didn't say what it was or where' date=' he didn't seem to care about that He was devastated and so was my mother. I guess her argument is that they have supported me and I used "their" money for tattoos, piercings and a name change-all untrue My dad is more concerned about health, which is understandable I guess I'll show them the arm one when they come out since it would be the easiest to show and hardest to hide. I don't think it's a good time yet to mention the back tattoos or the one coming up in March, which I am not going to cancel[/quote']

Any time all someone can talk about is 'the money you spent' or where it came from, I instantly stop listening and don't give any of their arguments validation.. It's simple in terms of money.. It's just money, everything you do costs money and you can't take it with you.
