My first exposure to people my age being tattooed was early 90's high school. Some punk rock skater friends of mine had gotten machines somehow (pre-internet) and started tattooing themselves and others with tribal and skate logos. They were usually on ankles or places they could be hidden from parents, unless those parents read the yearbook, because there was a whole article in it about tattooing as a trend. The quality of those 'tatz' turned me off to tattooing and I don't think I saw a good tattoo until I moved into Houston ten years later.
Ironically, I got into getting tattooed myself when I went with a friend to have his high school scratcher tattoo covered at a real shop :)

@Cu-Bu hold onto your horses (and T.V.) homes , I feel something may have been lost in translation here . Pretty sure thats not Horiyoshi III of Yokohama rather a collector called Yoshi who has been tattooed by the main man and who also wears a tigers head by Bob Roberts .

The only person I know that has actually met him has absolutely nothing at all good to say about him. Used to beat up his shopkid/apprentice, bullied him into spotting him & his roided out buddies while they were working out(the kid would never be able to actually spot the amount of weight they were pushing), kept horrible care of a bunch of animals in his basement, etc.
Ha, out of all the things Jack told me about Roy Boy, the most distaste he had was that Roy Boy was a 'smut peddler' at conventions back in the 80s.
Personally, the shit with the animals is what bothers me the most.

Having lived in the West Country, UK for most of my life it would have to be Bristols Les Skuse. I would have loved to have been tattooed by Les, he died in 1973 a couple of years after I got tattooed for the first time. Here is some of Les Skuses work.

I just saw the Sears thing on Tumblr. Crazy.
And, I just got an email back from the VP of merchandising at Dick Blick saying that due to responses to their carrying Skin Candy inks, they "are reviewing [their] product selections and will respond responsibly," whatever that means. It all seems like a form response to me.

it's awesome getting something from a tattooer that's been doing it since before many of us were even born
also awesome that he's perfectly happy tattooing it just like it is on the sheet, and he'll take his time even though it's just a little piece of flash

I just got home from our little trip to LA, and I brought a friend:

I went to Bob Roberts and asked him for one of his tiger heads. He saw the spot I had open and furrowed his brow. "That's gonna be tough." He tried to sketch something on, but I could tell he was kinda flustered, so I said, "Ya know, I also really like your spiders." He lit up and said, "Now you're talkin'!" He drew it on and knocked it out in half an hour. All in all, it was a great, great experience. He and I chatted about music and, of course, tattoos. He asked to see my back, then said, "I got a snake on my back, too." He then proceeded to melt my face off by showing me his Ed Hardy backpiece, as well as his Horiyoshi III torso pieces. Coolest fucking dude ever, and I am beyond stoked on my black widow.

Here's where I get flamed...
So, no, this isn't an intricate, beautiful piece, but the style and execution were hot stuff in the street-club "Greaser" culture of the late sixties. This one was put on with a sharpened shoe-nail and boiled ink from a BIC whilst in a "youth home" around 1968 or so.
I've thought about having it covered or removed, but for some reason, just can't bring myself to do it. It was the third tat I put on myself, the other two are long covered.
Oh, and if anyone here is into old watches, let me know-always open to buy/sell/trade for Elgins and other good quality old watches.
